Well, what a shame -- The Encounter restaurant at LAX has closed!

The architecture was fantastic; the food... average on a good day. But for a place to sit and watch the comings and goings of an airport and somehow pretend you were living in the 1950s... absolutely wonderful.

That was really the thing that made it so much fun. You could step out of the terminal, walk in sunshine, see some greenery, breathe the, er, not so fresh air, and just feel removed from the stress of an airport terminal. In a kind of diner-like atmosphere... Given the novelty of walking anywhere in LA, and the horrors ahead of an 11-hour red-eye, I rather liked it...
