I've been searching in vain for the answer to what I thought was a fairly easy question regarding the new security measures currently in place. I will be traveling through Birmingham to Amsterdam this December and am wanting to take my mains powered media box/player and external hard drive and accessories( including battery powered remote) in my hand luggage, I've done this before but I'm now concerned they might be confiscated under the new rules. Any help, advise or personal experiences would be much appreciated.

There is advice here

but it doesn't seem to cover what you are asking. I would suggest a phone call to Virgin to clarify.

I would personally try and contact the Airport for a definitive answer. Someone from any airlines call centre can offer "advice" but the final decision on what is allowed through security lies with the screeners in the search area.

Of course, a printout of any official Dept of Transport / .Gov.uk webpage may help too.

All you need is a screener who had a bad nights sleep the night before and they can go into jobs worth mode, throwing common sense out of the window. (Like the one I had years ago at LTN - the only liquid / paste I had was a small tube of toothpaste, like you get in the UC amenity kit, so I did not bother with plastic bagging it, instead just put in the tray by itself for x-ray... nice clear x-ray image. He was having none of it & insisted the plastic bag made a difference to the x-ray image! Ha. I just dropped the tube in the bin and left it).

If it's any help, a few years ago, Ryanair said they would be happy for us to carry a Sky box as hand luggage - but this was before all the electrical rules.
