Dress code when turning left?

I'll be flying Glasgow-Tokyo next month on a work related matter. For that length of flight company rules is business class y) and hopefully I'll be on the Emirates.

I've been PE a couple of times but I've never flown BC before, even when on business! A friend of mine, seasoned traveller, always wears a suit when flying on business, he says it's so he can get an upgrade into BC if there's one going. But what if I'm already booked in, I don't fancy wearing a suit for 23 hours!

I'm not talking about anything unreasonable, I like to wear a smart pair of really comfortable £80 jeans (Zu+Elements from my wife's business), not ripped or anything. Are these ok to wear on board?

Wear whatever you like and are comfortable in.

The only exception is BA flights to Bermuda where it's compulsory for men to wear a blazer and cravat.

I think the days of hoping to blag an upgrade by dressing smartly are largely gone - now it's all about flying status in terms of where you fit in the pecking order.

On the routes I travel, I see very few people in UC in suits these days - even if you're meeting clients at the other end, there are (more often than not) good facilities to change when you arrive, and your trousers are hardly going to look their best when you've been sitting on a plane for many hours.

I've travelled UC twice and fitted in fine with smart jeans and a smart t-shirt/jumper.

I've seen plenty of both... In clubhouses and on flights... Indeed, sometimes I think that J class is worse for track suits...

Seriously wear what you are comfy wearing but remember it is a public place so the normal decencies apply - so no wandering around in your pants (even if clean)

as long as its not a vest type shirt, I cringe when I see someone getting on an 8 hour flight wearing one, imagine all that time breathing in sweat if you are lucky enough to bag the next seat.

my usual dress for PE or Uc is chinos and a polo shirt , smart but casual and more important lose and comfy. a pre descent change into shorts is a must landing in Fla !!

Having just done J on Emirates there were no issues on clothing...the range on my flights was from thawb to jeans and t-shirts. Oh and there was a fellow in a pink frock and very nice he looked too.

And it is a good tip to take a pair of jim-jams in your carry on, there aren't any pjs in the J amenity kit.

You will enjoy the EK J experience, the food and booze are excellent. The 380 is impressive. I did a couple of TRS which you will find in here.

I was waiting for a connecting flight back to SFO recently at LAX, inbound aircraft came from Vegas and off staggered a woman wearing a bikini covered only by some sort of see through, and I mean completely transparent, lace thing. Southwest would never have put up with that! :0

I've gone straight from the Bridge to the airport before and was still wearing my football shirt and it so happened that on that day West Ham United players were in the CH. In their training kit too.

This thread just reminded me of a couple of things from previous flights.

The first was on one of my earliest flights with Virgin. It was to JNB and I was either in Y or PE and so was waiting in the gate area. Sitting opposite me with one leg resting on the other (not cross-legged but with the ankle resting on the opposite knee, if you know what I mean) was a middle-aged man wearing the skimpiest pair of denim cut-offs I have ever seen on a man. They are nowadays worn by teenage girls - you know the kind, the ones which skim over their bum-cheeks! :0 It was gross but I was mesmerised It left nothing to the imagination and I fully expected his *liáthroídí to pop out!

The second was my nephew's insistence on wearing a football shirt on a trip again to JNB Mind you I can't talk since we donned deeley boppers on leaving! ii)

A third one was the business man fully suited and booted who settled himself in the suite behind mine in JFK. The minute the seat belt sign went off he jumped up, converted his suite to bed-mode and then lay down still fully suited. He was still like that in the morning and his suit looked like - well, that he had slept in it

That flight was from EWR not JFK and doesn't SRB usually dress casually even when wearing a jacket?

I was purely advising the OP that if they wore a footy shirt or track suit they might find themselves standing out rather than fitting in with the crowd, which is clearly their intention.

I'm a season ticket holder at a league 2 club so have nothing against wearers of footy shirts, I just never wear them except to matches.

As for me, I frequently wear either cricket or rugby shirts when flying. But maybe that's middle class enough not to cause alarm to anyone

As a chap, i've always plumbed for wearing my suit jacket over jeans and a casual shirt when travelling for business. It saves your jacket getting creased, in UC & PE they always hang your jacket for you. When I travel in economy going on holiday, i wear flip flips (I have two left feet...when I dance) shorts and a t -shirt.
