Hi, we went to San Francisco for the first time last year and loved it. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton, bit pricey, but very good and had everything we needed. The restaurant is highly recommended also.
I mostly use and know hotels for bars around here, and I'd have to also say both the Clift and Vitale win out there. Edge to Vitale for the location.

I stay at the Clift, but then I know the concierge so get looked after.
The Hilton is very well located, but large and a little characterless. The Palace is good, recently went to a conference there. My favourite is the Hotel Vitale but that may be to pricey.
None, unfortunately, offer a free wife (or even husband). Next time I travel, I'm going with Tonty.
It's that age-old thing - an experience can make or break a hotel... :# Personally, only had good experiences in the W (not with the hookers, mind

Another vote for the Vitale here though, if not the W y)
you could also consider renting an apartment. We've done this several times and offers much better value for money than a hotel, with more space etc.
