Lifted from the FT thread.

AFter they dropped MEL it seems that everyone is worried they will drop SYD....I cant really see it though- surely they would want at least one flight into SYD. I know they would have a presence through QF but I just think it would cause too much bad press in Australia for them to do it...though if the do I can just see the VS adds springing up all over SYD 'only flat bed in J to LHR' 'you maybe down under but we havent forgotten u' and SRB off to the CAA to ask for more services to Australia. But BA wont drop it no way

There is no way that BA would drop this route.

1. The prestige (although, this may have held a few years ago but I don't know about now)
2. The high yield traffic
3. Presence in Australia
4. Admitting defeat to VS[8D][}:)];)

Not sure Willie cares about prestige any more - the calculators run BA like never before and I think he has no interest in past vendettas between BA and VA. Truth is BA's 747s and 777s are heavily subscribed and China and India are taking off big time so I wouldn't be surprised ...

Then I would hope VA go and claim more rights to fly!

It simply wont happen- it would be like BA turning round and saying 'sorry are 777's/744's are needed in india and asia so we wont fly to LAX and JFK we will only codeshare with AA'.

Yes Asia is big- but still the biggest market China is only served with 777's.

You are more likely to see other services re adjusted to allow for more a/c. For example thye could drop services to Brazil...not saying it will happen.

I would think we will see a nice little order for some a/c from BA very soon.

BA will not do it- the bad press in Australia will be enough to put them off- QF wont like thier sister airline cutting routes as it will give them bad press as well.

India expansion? How else could they expand?? The CAA wont allow them anymore flights as they have too many. I cant see any major 'new' routes in Asia or india now they have PVG.

Bad press my aerosols.
Sydney (for the rest of the world) is not Australia - might get bad press in Sydney but the rest of Austrlaia would not give two hoots about it given BA has progressively pulled out of the rest of the cities over the last few years.
I think the rest of Australia would rarely fly to Sydney to transfer as it is and fly BA anyway when there are so many direct flights to Asia and Europe from their own airports including Qantas.
