Where can I buy Indian Currency

I am trying to purchase some indian currency and none of the usual providers seem to supply it. Does anyone know a reason for this or somewhere I can purchase before travelling?

It is illegal to export/import Indian Ruppee Currency.

I was advised to take Sterling/USD travellers cheques and exchange over there or use ATM card

I've never had a problem changing money at the airport in Delhi on arrival. Sterling or dollars seem OK. Never tried travellers cheques though. I am told that it is advisable to get receipts for all your currency transactions so that, if challenged, you can prove what you've done before leaving. Never been challenged though.

Be aware that you will have to change everything back before you leave as it is illegal to export rupees. Certainly at Delhi airport, you must do this before clearing security as their are no money changers after that point, though there are no signs to tell you this. Having to go back through security to do it is a pain as the queues can be very long.

My experience from Bangalore and Mumbai, there's a bureau de change in the arrivals hall, just change a bit there whilst waiting for your suitcase, then use atms.

I would suggest not changing a vast amount at the airport, some of the cab journeys from airport to hotel can be a little "interesting", and you don't necessarily want to be carrying a wodge.
