Julian,
I have only stayed in one hotel in Rome, the Grand de la Minerve on Piazza de la Minerva, right in the middle of central Rome and within easy walking distance of the major historical sites. The hotel has a good restaurant, comfortable rooms, a rooftop garden/bar/restaurant and there are other good dining and cafe options nearby.

Ditto Chuck, took the no. 1 there for 10 year anniversary last year, thought it lovely if a little old fashioned but the suite was great and cocktail on the roof lovely. The barman remembered my precise mix of martini every time I appeared and I didn't need to open my mouth. Now that's good service. And it's right next to the Pantheon, the most amazing building in the world (OK hyperbole excepted).

None of which answers the question ... the Minerve is a little expensive (though when we were there BA crew used it as their Rome hotel so someone must get a deal!).

Try Hotel Barocco on the Piazza Barberini, it's not listed but is very nice and a great location.

Also suggest you search in http://www.tripadviser.com, there are many very good hotels in Rome that don't have official listings and if you balance out the reviews in tripadviser you get a rough view of them.

The Capo D'Africa near the Colosseum is really well rated or for a superb location the Pace Helvezia. We spent 3 nights there a couple of years ago in September. Not everyones cup of tea as not massively luxurious but we thought that the location was absolutely fantastic easy to walk through the forum to the colosseum or to the trevi fountain. They have a roof top terrace where you can take a bottle of wine and watch the sun go down!

I can recommend the hotel Berneni Bristol. The rooftop restaurant L'Olimpio has the most beautiful panoramic views across the roof tops of the city. The hotel is full of traditional beauty within a very well modernized accommodation.

The hotel is very well located very close to the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps, it is also easily accessible to all the greater attractions of roam.

George the hotel general manager is an absolute star and will go out of his way to ensure guests enjoy their stay at the hotel.

For a five star hotel we found the prices very reasonable and certainly we never felt over charged for any part of the services we received. The Sunday Brunch at the L'Olimpio is not to be missed; you may need to book in advance.

Have a great trip wherever you may stay.
Cheers Wayne
