Unless you really like heat and humidity, stay away during the summer months!

There was a time, until very recently actually, where I was certain that the only way you would get me back to Texas was in an RAF bomber filled with cow droppings.

However, life has a way of being ironic and I am looking at returning to the lone star state. I lived there about 15ish years ago and have worked in many of the port towns there since so here is my 2 cents.

Dont go West young man. West Texas is hells waiting room, places like El Paso are just depressing. If you are going to go to Texas do the gulf coast. Start at Galveston then work your way down via Corpus Christi, and then end up at South Padre Island (possibly my future home if the god of Venture Capital smiles at me in the next few weeks).

Take in San Antonio (the riverwalk and the alamo) and don't miss Austin - its an amazing cosmoploitan town that you would swear isnt in Texas. Don't bother crossing the border, the Mexican border cities are just horrible unless you get down as far as Tampico and thats really more for history buffs.

If you are expecting amazing scenic vistas from old John Wayne movies then be prepared to be dissapointed, Texas is one vast, flat field of scrub grass.

There is the John Kennedy space center close to a place called Kimah (I know I spelt that wrong, the only reason I remember it is beacuse of the Nan bread with the same name). Avoid Houston and Dallas, huge urban sprawls, but if you do end up in Houston the Richmond arms is a decent place to spend time (found in Richmond funilly enough) and it has a cracking Indian restaurant next door.

Of course you should try Tex-Mex cuisine, you can feel your arteries hardeing as you eat but its good....take some Tums with you though.

Great things about Texas........ You can have a beer on the beach.

Bad things about Texas.....Concealed gun permits (dont argue with the locals)
