Lexington Ave (next avenue west of 3rd) in Midtown East is famously known for its many hotels in this area. I remember walking past many different hotels on Lexington, from small individual boutique to large chain luxury.

Some of the better known include the W New York (541 Lexington at 50th), New York Marriott East Side (525 Lexington at 49th), Radisson Lexington Hotel New York (511 Lexington Ave at 48th) and many more! Can't tell you more as I haven't stayed at any of these properties, I'm afraid.

The Waldorf Astoria is also around this area, ok not really cheap but nice, depends how much your looking to spend per night I guess.

Afraid it's on expenses, and one thing I feel strongly about is not setting a poor example by being profligate. So Waldorf is not really on the cards I am afraid, shame though that is [n]. I have been paying about $200 up to now, and was probably looking at a similar budget.

I did have a look on the internet for the area. But the problem is that all the ones I have stayed in thus far have looked nice on the internet, but in real life the stains and fleas rather put you off. So was really interested in the personal recommendation of someone here, as the opinions I have received here have always been trustworthy.

$200 - mmm thats not going to be easy me thinks, sorry can't help in that budget range then, try trip advisor, usually fairly reliable, expeida's reviews are quite useful too.

The Radisson used to be VS crew hotel, and quite presentable,if you can get a good rate out of them. The Waldorf is basically a Hilton in an old building however they try to dress it up. The Helmsley might be worth a look if you dont mind a few extra blocks to 42nd.

Have stayed in the Helmsley on 42nd twice and it was fine both times - nothing special though. We spent hardly any time in the hotel though.[:I]

Jeremy,
That neighborhood is pricey following the elimination of two properties, the Drake (Swissotel) and the Plaza (Starwood) within a year of one another. I am staying at either the Marriott Eastside or the Waldorf these days and neither is typically below $200 though if you try the book ahead option at the Marriott you could get in there for about $225 IIRC. That property is 49 and Lex and convenient to everything. Plus the back side of the Waldorf is across the street; it's excellent breakfast room, Oscars, is a wonderful way to begin your day.

Jeremy,
I would recommend the Hilton New York on (Avenue of the Americas) very nice hotel & not very expensive if you book on-line you get some good net direct rates. :)

When in NY I am based around 50th and 6th and have a similar budget. Used to stay in NY Hilton but prices went up a bit a year or so ago. Have tried a few in the area - a couple of which are a little far West but would suggest the Park Central on 7th. Last time I was there it was VS CC hotel.

IIRC there is a doubletree somewhere around there on Lex. This should be cheaper than some of the others mentioned.

Sometimes VH can come up with good rates - I'm sure I've seen some GBP 100 nights in the Waldorf Astoria in the past.
