There's an entertaining article in last week's Economist subtitled 'Inflight Announcements are Not Entirely Truthful' ...

Link here but since it's premium content some snippets:

Do not bother to look for your life-jacket - the number of wide bodied aircraft that have successfully landed at sea is zero ...

To mention the use of slides as rafts is entering the world of science fiction ...

The real reason why mobile phones are asked to be switched off is because they interfere with comms networks on the ground ... and since most flights take off with one or two accidentally left on if they really were dangerous we wouldn't be allowed to take them on board - oh and when we allow mobile phone use in air we'll mysteriously solve all the security on-problems anyway ...

The real purpose of refreshments is to keep you in your seats, and one or two drinks are aimed at ensuring everyone is mildly sedated ...

Doors to automatic and cross check really means: cabin crew please check the doors are closed properly ...

Videos about in flight health and DVT are solely aimed at reducing liability should something happen ...

If safety were an airlines first priority all seats would be rear facing ... like military craft because they're safer in an emergency landing situation ...
