Sammy's Wood Fired Pizza

I do need to let it be known straight out that I am a fan of Sammy's and have been since 1996 when I wandered in of the streets to their Sahara location in search of pizza.

Over the years I had somehow managed to stay with in a 20 minute drive of a Sammy's..of course this is a total coincidence [:I]

Well the move to the new house 3 years ago caused an issue, the drive would be 40 minutes and honesty after a day at work I just could not be bothered.

Needless to say I was a little more than happy when I noticed the Sammy's sign going up in a strip mall just 10 minutes from my house [y].....I then promptly forgot that it was there till today...old age settlings in me thinks.

So like a giddy school child on Christmas morning we head into what to me is the newest Sammy's, a big step up in the world compared to the original one I may add, though honestly when it comes to pizza the surroundings do not matter to me, I am there for a good pie.

We were greeted quickly and escorted to what would be our table for this little adventure, our bus boy greeted us and took our drink order, then our waitress Tisha quickly greeted us and asked if we had any questions about the menu, so far so good....however it turns out that Tisha would not be our waitress, our bus boy turned out to be our waiter, just a case of mistaken waiting stations...oh well move on...

While the wife decided what to order (think when Harry met Sally) I decided to start with some coconut shrimp skewers..order taken...drinks empty...not sign of a refill [:?]

Our waiter returns to check on us, see if we are ready to order the main dishes...no drink refills...Now at this point I should point out that there are three things that I hate when I am at a restaurant...empty glasses, a server who went to the Burger Kind school of serving and being nickel and dimmed with stupid things...today we managed perfection, all three at one seating.

By now you may of noticed that I named the person that started to wait on us, however I did not name the person that ended up waiting on us, the reason for this is well....he was useless...drinks not being refilled, the personality of a dead fish, the list goes on, however everyone has their off days so we shall let him off with a stern look and bad tip.

Anyways the old mind is wandering, I ordered my standard New York pizza, the wife orders the mini Kobe burgers minus a few things and fries, with a side of ranch..we were informed that the side of ranch would be $0.95...Ok I say, who cares it is only $0.95, of course if you have been keeping up with me so far you will know that I hate this stuff. It is right up there with charging for refills on sodas.

The coconut shrimp show up along with drink refills the Shrimp were good..very very good, so good in fact I could of quite happily made an entire meal out of a couple of dozen of them.Plates are cleared and we wait...and wait..and wait. Drinks empty again, but what the heck..no food so why would we need a drink [?]

Well after a 30 minute wait or so the food appears, along with the side of ranch..which amazingly appeared to be the same stuff that every restaurant in town uses and equally amazingly doesn't charge you for..yes ok it irrates the hell out of me, it is a stupid penny pinching move by any restaurant, I can understand it when you are getting fast food, but in a sit down restaurant it is wrong.

So the pizza was good...very good, the burgers were good, of course they were not quite what the wife ordered..but again..Harry met Sally..oh and the drinks were empty again.

Meal finished..happy me..not very happy wife..no sign of the waiter, I guess he doesn't want to rush anyone..cool..but making someone wait..not so good..oh and no drinks..

Waiter shows up, clears plates, deposits check and disappears..and no drinks..after many minutes of waiting the credit card slip appears, filled out and miracle.."would you like a refill"...I cringe, the wife oh has spent a part of her life let's loose, she explains how drinks during the meal would be nice but it is ok as we are leaving..I also happened to notice the manager perk up..and slink off..chicken..

So to sum up.

Loved the food
Hated the service
What the heck is with the $0.95 with the side order of ranch, I was going to ask the manager just so I could post his thoughts..but he had disappeared and I could not be bothered to find him.

Would I eat there again..sure..I love the pizza..I would make sure that I don't get the same server..and I will be sure to ask the manager what is up with the ranch dressing.

I prefer to leave a tip small enough to where someone knows they messed up.

We could re-visit the entire tipping thread here on the back of your experience Scrooge.

I find it interesting that the UK seems to be becoming more and more a tipping culture. It seems a little time ago when this wasn't the case in restaurants here, but now that little slip of paper you sign does usually have a field for a gratuity. Better not get me started on that....[?]
