Hi

Can some one recommend a Taxi/Limo Service that I can prebook from here in the UK to meet me in terminal off the VS045 drive me to Downtown Manhattan?

Will just be myself and 1 large suitcase.

Have been quoted $65+$9Parking +$.4.5 Tolls plus tip which seems to be the going rate but I just wanted a recommendation from others who may have experience of this.

Cheers

I would just use the Yellow Cabs outside the terminal. The flat rate is $45 plus tolls and tips, which usually equates to $60 all in. There are always plenty around and because of the laws they have to adhere too they usually very good, we always use them and have never had a problem. Just don't expect much chit chat from the driver, as very few have English as their first language!

Returning to JFK from Manhattan Island I would book a car, $82 all in was what we paid last time and as the cabs are on meters and not flat rates it usually works cheaper.

Was thinking of the yellow cab option but as I am arriving this Friday Evening at the start of a holiday weekend I worried about lengthy queues and the availability of a cab

When I caught a cab from the hotel in Manhattan to JFK recently I was most surprised when he set the meter to a flat fare and charged me only $50

We have never had a problem getting a cab within 5mins of leaving the terminal, but have never arrived on a Friday evening. As you are Au your bags should be first off so you SHOULD beat the majority of the pax also going for cabs.

we took a yellow cab and it was just like test track at epcot..... we used a car service back to JFK booked through the hotel only $10 more and a smooth ride in a nice Town car.

Tough call. Cabs are everywhere at the airport. Arriving on Friday evening means the airport will be busy, true. On balance I'd probably splurge and get the car. Suggest you ask your hotel to recommend the service they like to use. There are many services (Lincoln being one, as suggested above). Some interchange their cars with other services.

When leaving JFK, unless you are staying on the Upper East Side or Upper West Side make certain you tell your driver you want to go into Manhattan via the Midtown Tunnel, often the quickest option. Hired cars always do this, cabs sometimes meander. This is more important on the outbound back to the airport if you use a cab, as fixed fares only apply from JFK and not going back. Through the Midtown Tunnel will be the cheapest/quickest route most of the time, unless you are near the 59th St bridge or one of the others. You must tell the driver, however; they sometimes like to go way out of their way in order to "improve" their fare.

Whatever you do, don't chance it and pick up a car from a tout at the airport. Amazingly they still operate freely within the arrivals area post customs - some, somewhat naive, Indian colleagues of mine got collared by one recently and ended up paying over $200 [:0] and feeling very nervous to boot. Ergo, always book or take a yellow cab.
