I (self-employed) need to take out some travel insurance for 2 adults and 2 children that covers the following;

Business travel - world wide.
Holidays - world wide.
Winter sports world wide.

Having now looked at the various obvious places (moneysupermarket, compare the market etc), I'm beginning to think that the products offered don't seem entirely suitable, when I look at the most likely things I/anyone might reasonably expect to need;

Individual items such as camera - my camera and single lens is worth about 1K GBP.
Custom-fitted Ski-boots.
Individual items such as jewellery, iPhone/iPod all have not insignificant values to replace.
Business laptop - replacement value about >2K.
Contents of Baggage - suits, wife's dresses (for her not me!!!)

However, when I come to look at the cover from nearly all products, what's offered seems to be way below what would be needed to cover the most likely scenarios (except perhaps medical cover which is usually reasistic)? Am I alone in thinking that the cover offered by most companies is under what would be required should a claim be needed?

Does anyone know of a travel insurance product/offerer that actually reflects reality in terms of whats offered for various likely claims?

Thanks.

I buy American Express travel insurance for the #1 and me every year. It may not be the cheapest but it is quite comprehensive and you can add on bits to cover business travel (laptops), winter sports, etc. May be worth a look - it'll be something like 150 quid for you and the family ...

If you have lots of expensive items you want like for like full replacement insurance then it will probbaly cost! You need to balance that cost against the risk of anything happening to yout items.

Check your household and business insurance to see if they have the cover you need inclded.

I think it is a case of you get what you pay for. There are so many different policies available, and the difference between the cheap ones and the more costly ones is the level of cover offered. So I guess it is up to you to decide what level of cover you want and how much you are prepared to pay for it.

We have American Express travel insurance through our Platinum card and the level of cover is very good.

I second that. Often you can pay twice for the same cover. Some travel insurance lets you opt out of cover you have got already.

You might be better off contacting a high street broker rather than an internet based one.

I do the same as I couldn't find anything of a similar level of cover, especially for worldwide travel.

I'd look at AmEx insurance, you do get what you pay for. You may be better getting a Platinum AmEx charge card, as you could then cover other people in your family (and maybe they could chip in towards the cost). You'd also get car hire insurance as well which can soon mount up.

Most items can be covered under the personal possessions part of your home insurance. That's the best way of covering expensive items and then they are covered all the time
