I seemed to have amassed a few hundred thousand hhonors points over the last couple of years and am thinking about spending them in conjunction with the VS sale that has just appeared.

If I was to book a room with the hhonors points, I am to assume its a standard room and if so can you upgrade with either more points or cash?

many thanks

You get a Standard room/your status entitlement ie exec room for diamonds. No way to pay for an upgrade with points.Don't know if the paid (£/$s) space available upgrades pop up on points stays and as Ive burn all our points have no points booking to look at.

Most of the hotels now participate in a programme called NOR1, which is pretty universally hated by the FTers on the Hilton board. If your hotel participates, once you've booked your standard room, you will be offered a number of paid upgrade options, as well as any space available status upgrades (which should show already ticked and for $0.

I have never not received a status upgrade on an award reservation, but 6 days is the most I've stayed. It is reported to be less likely on stays of longer duration.

But if a better room is important, and you are happy with the price, NOR1 seems to be the way to go. These upgrades are requests though, not guaranteed.

And if you have status, don't forget the preferential reward rates for stays over four days.
