Hello!

I'm visiting NYC next month for a long weekend, flying in on the VS17.

This gets me into EWR for 11:20pm ish.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for getting into central manhattan? Staying in Chelsea area ( W 25th st, 5 mins from Penn station).

My current thinking is to get the AirTrain to Penn Station and get the 5 minute cab ride to the hotel. My concern is it will be very late by the time we've got bags etc and I wonder how safe the AirTrain will be? I'm led to believe it will be roughly $60 each way for the taxi which I'd like to avoid.

Anyone know of any other good options (with luggage)?

Also, anyone got any recommendations for travel whilst there? I'm currently considering the 7 day metro pass for $29 - seems very reasonable for unlimited use.

Many thanks,

Luke

You could try one of the shared van rides. look on the EWR website. But tbh at that time of night a taxi or pre booked car will be well worth it to get to the hotel quicker. Try carmel limos

The metro card is very good value. you can get a paygo version as well. You will need to get one from the machines but ask the staff in the booth for a copy of The Map

I would try and get off the aircraft as soon as possible as once midnight hits, only a small skeleton staff is on duty at immigration - I've seen the long, slow queue after a delay with my own eyes.

Luke,
I used these in January and had no complaints whatsoever http://www.dial7.com/. Fixed fee so no meter running.EWR is a reasonable journey out of the city and when I've flown in there it's been late too (no queues at immigration though :D ). I'd avoid public transport that late (particularly with luggage).

Thanks all for the advice, think I'll go with one of the car services as mentioned :)

I've used Dial 7 as well from EWR and they were good as was wirolimo.com.

It totally depends what you value. I always use the train to get to/from EWR. Especially if you are going to/from near Penn station it's easy and much cheaper than a cab, at $12.50 each way. From EWR the Airtrain drops you at the Newark Rail Link (a 10 min ride), then you get a NY bound train, Track 1 or Track A. I've never had to wait more than 15 mins for one, although that late at night it'll be every 30mins. The journey to Penn is about 25-30mins. Its totally safe.

All this said, you'll prob be knackered on arrival and negotiating the train might be annoying. You could cab it on arrival and take the train on return? I used to take a cab until I realised how easy the train link is.

If going out to EWR. Follow signs in Penn for NJ transit - tracks 1-10. There are ticket machines to the left of the main concourse as you walk in from the main Madison Square Garden entrance, in the same area as the track entrances. The notice boards mark any train stopping at the Newark Int Airport stop with 'EWR'. Get off at Newark LIberty Int (usually 3rd/4th stop) and there are obvious signs to the Airtrain. Virgin is Terminal B.

Good luck, weather here was fab today! Winter has finally gone.
