Would appreciate any recommendations for a nice yet not too pricey hotel for our first night following arrival on the VS24 in May. The following day we'll be driving to San Diego so this is really just somewhere to put our heads down but nonetheless we're rather go on a recommendation!

Thanks
James

Hi,

I'll be able to answer on the 13th of May!

We're flying into LAX on ANZ so don't get in until 20:00ish; booked into the Crowne Plaza for the night before driving to Vegas in the morning. Virgin Holidays gave us a price of £63.50, which seemed OK?

However, when the invoice cam through there are mentions of work being undertaken on certain floors!!

We'll likely sleep like the dead and be up early due to the jet lag but you may want to steer clear of this one!!

Hotels.com had good choices near LAX; usual suspects, (Hyatt, Hilton, et al), for about £70 a night?

Good thing about a 10 hour flight - usually able to sleep anywhere after that!

Craig.

Like craigmonster, I'm flying into LAX with ANZ on 18th Feb, before flying onto Vegas the next day.

We are staying at the Embassy Suites LAX South (there is a 'North' one as well).
They have a free shuttle, every room is a suite and the price includes a free cooked to order breakfast. Booked through Expedia a few weeks ago for £65, but also went through Quidco who were offering 12% cash back at the time.

The place gets OK reviews on Tripadvisor, so for one night looks ideal.

Are you picking up a hire car at LAX? If so I'll assume you want an airport hotel with a free shuttlebus to get you back to the terminals and then a rental car bus to the car pick-up?

I've stayed at the Hilton, but only as Diamond, however I wouldn't recommend it due to the poor food and dining options. The airport Sheraton is preferred by me.

If you're picking up a car then I'd stay somewhere like the Renaissance or the Sheraton Four Points - both are close enough to walk to the car depots without the hassle of having to catch the hotel bus back to the terminal and then another shuttle to the car lots. I've stayed at both recently with the Renaissance being the better of the two.

Thanks everyone. Yes we're collecting a car but I actually figured we'd collect it on arrival after the flight - that way we're ready to rock & no faffing in the morning. I guess though, based on what I'm learning here re some of the hotels being a stone's throw from car depots, that we could just to walk to the depot in the moring and collect the car. Incidentally if we did collect the car straight off the VS24, can we park for free at nearby hotels or is there typically a fee? The Sheraton Four Points seems a good bet - thanks Slinky & DL for that - I'm also SPG gold so that should help too :) Won't book quite yet as still a while to go so please anyone come forth with other recommendations!

Thanks

Good point Dear Lady Dragon ... Steve, getting to pick up a car late in the day off the VS24 can be a drag, I usually take the 7 and then get a limo to Palm Springs and pick up a car there, otherwise one of us has to stay dry. Following DL's advice you can enjoy the flight, crash, the get the car fresh in the morning.

Most of the hotels have a fee for parking (which is usually about $15-20). There is plenty of unrestricted free street parking around the Four Points / Renaissance (literally a 2 minute walk back to both hotels) although as slinky has said collecting a car following a longish flight would need the driver to not have been drinking. If you pick up the car straight off the VS23 (the VS24 is the return) you then have to load the bags in/out of the car and get back to the hotel so there will be a fair amount of faffing doing that- I find it much easier to get to the hotel straight off, have a few drinks, hit the sack and be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning :) .

Four Points is convenient but for just an extra few minutes walk and not that much extra money you can get the Sheraton Gateway which is way nicer.
I often stay there and walk round to Hertz when I need the car.

My suggestion ism even though I understand why you want the next day hassle free, take the hotel bus from the airport to the hotel and forget about the car until the next morning. You'll be tired with luggage so why put yourself through the hassle fo the bus ride to the car rental, collect the car and load up, drive to hotel and off load then park the car for the night (and pay don't forget) - to me that seems more hassle than collecting the next morning.

And you save a day's car rental!

PS mine and DL's recommendation is also for the Sheration Gateway, should have been more specific!

We've done the walk to dollar round the corner from the hotel. There were no queues to pick up the car in the morning. Would highly recommend this option

Another vote here for either the Renaissance or Sheraton Four Points - have stayed at both following the VS23 then walked to Alamo the following morning to collect the car. Wouldn't hesitate to stay at either again. The Marriott and Westin are also nice hotels that are an easy walk to the car rental depots.
