Amex Points Question

Hi all

I am looking to refer my wife for an Amex Preferred Gold card, add myself as a supplementary card holder, and then cancel my own card.

Will this keep my points balance active or will I have to transfer them to Virgin/Avios etc?

My understanding is that if you cancel your card your points will go unless you either transfer them out before cancelling ( into Avios, Virgin etc) or open a Blue Amex rewards card ( this is a free card) and that will keep the points active.
