Those of you who know me will be wondering why I'm asking advice on a place I have been visiting twice a year for the past 13...:)

Simple reason is my God-daughter is going next week and there is no way she would want to go to the places we do. She is 25 and she is going for a week and has asked me for some hints and tips on what to do in Vegas.

I've told her all I can about which casinos to visit and she wants to go to the Grand Canyon, but as far as nightlife goes we have completely different tastes.

As an example she is really looking forward to going to Coyote Ugly and Rain nighclub at The Palms but can anyone give me an idea of other places she might like to visit?

Also they want to keep it fairly cheap so no suggestions of Bellagio restaurants please, where would be good places to suggest they eat? Me and hubby are quite set in our ways of where we like to go and again I'm not sure that they would be to her tastes.

I'd be grateful for any help you can give me.

Thanks

I wouldn't waste my time with Coyote Ugly. If you're expecting anything similar to the bar in the film, you'll be disappointed.
I went there last month and there were 6 girls in total and nine bouncers. Only two girls were standing on a bar type top and they pretty much gave the distinct impression they couldn't care less about anyone or even being there. Dance wise, they danced for a few seconds only (standing on the spot, hip swaying slightly).
After a few minutes of talking to each other, someone gave them a bottle of tequila or something and they demanded that all the women in the place come up and get a shot.......some came up straightaway, others needing coaxing. Probably about 40 people in the place, nearly half of those women of different age groups.
Shots consisted of pouring the drink straight into your mouth.
Afterwards, some girls came up for seconds and one man tried his luck - he had to pretend to be a dog and go around barking before he got lucky.
After that, half the people in the place left realising how boring it was.
$7 for a Heineken too compared to less in most other places.

The place is dark, dingy, souless and they don't like photography......did get 15 secs of video before I was told by the "dancing" girls to put the camera away.

Plenty of souvenirs to be bought from the shop outside......Margaritas in various glasses for various prices, t-shirts with "Misbehaviour Recommended" written on them etc, but that's exagerating on what you'll ever see.

We didn't go this time, but Dean said that Big Mama's Rib Shack and Soul Food is supposed to be very good - Time Out rave about it apparently.

We went to Battistas Hole In The Wall Italian, $18 - $26 each including soup or salad, garlic bread, unlimited house wine and a cappucino. Mad place, but the food was good and the atmosphere good too.

You'll know pretty much what else we did while we were there :)

as said before, forget Coyote Ugly,it's just a tourist trap.

Rain is cool, also the Vodoo Lounge at the Rio is good.

For a Coyote Ugly type of thing...well to be honest your not going to find them in a casino. The Hard Rock got hit with a $100k fine last year from the gaming board, due to "lewd acts"[ii] at there night club, since then all the casino's have cleaned up their acts, hence the reason that Coyote Ugly is..well boring..

have her drop me a line if you like and i'll point her in the right direction

Time before last while the ladies did the Thunder From Down Under the men went to a strip joint in the old town. Nearly got thrown out for making the table dancer laugh - "She makes her money from looking sexy - how's she meant to look sexy while she's laughing?".

Spoil Sport...

Would that be the Palamino..the owner just got busted for having a worker killed[V][n]

If thunder type things are on the plate then may I point her towards the Olympic Gardens..they have male dancers,as this is a family board I cannot go into details..but the wife had fun.

Id recommend the Ghost bar at the Palms for your god daughter, its the one high up on the 55th floor, its a lively place, has pumping tunes and amazing views of the strip. The Pink Taco Bar at the Hard Rock is also another hip 'n happening place, usually very lively at the weekends.

Hi, Shaz:Absolutely yes to the "Ghost Bar", plus "Mix" at THEHotel at Mandalay is a "happenin' place" for the under-30 group.

Missed seeing you in LA, Shaz. Hope you are well.

I concur.

To give you some example of the views of the strip - have a look at the banner at the top of this page for the Social coming up. I took that from the Ghost bar! :D

Sorry I haven't thanked you all sooner, I literally mailed her a huge list a couple of nights before they left based on your advice and what I know, and because of the pressure I'm currently under at work have hardly had time to think since.

So, everyone.... thank you all so much for your advice, I'm sure they are having a great time and I'll let you know what they thought when they get back.

Particularly thanks to Jetwet1 who it would now appear, is our resident travel and entertainment representative in LAS [oo][oo]

ChuckC - I was sorry to have missed you again too, hopefully we will be there in January and looking for some whale watching advice off the coast, but I'll be in touch once we are organised :)

Thanks again everyone
You are all STARS!!!!!! [oo]

I've just booked my first trip to Las Vegas, so I'm also looking for a bit of advice on various things. I'm going with my best friend so it will be a bit of a girlie weekend :D

How much should we try to book in advance? Obviously if we want to do a show then we'd need to sort that out (top choice at the moment is Barry Manilow!), but what about restaurants and nightclubs. I've been reading on various Vegas sites that you can buy front of line passes for some of the nightclubs - are these worth it, are the queues usually really long? I don't do queuing so these seem like a good idea to me, but I don't want to get ripped off ;). From the ones mentioned in this thread, I like the look of Voodoo or Ghost, plus having been a teenager in the 80's I'm tempted by Studio 54 - has anyone been there. As for restaurants do most need reservations - we're going to be there at the weekend, arriving Thursday leaving Monday if that makes a difference.

Also on the to do list is a trip to the Grand Canyon, preferably something that includes a helicopter tour - any tour companies that you regulars would recommend?

I think that should do for now :D:D

As well as bumping the topic now that all the regulars are back from Vegas, I also had some bits and pieces to add :D

Having read up on trips to the Grand Canyon it would seem that most of the companies only go to the West Rim via helicopter and that to go to the South Rim it's a plane or bus ride. I don't really want to spend the whole day on a bus, so if anyone has done a trip via plane then I'd be interested in recommendations - particularly trips that either include a helicopter ride or give you enough time at the Canyon to organise one.

It looks like we're going to see Barry Manilow on the Friday night so I'd be grateful for any restaurant recommendations in the area. Should we try for an early bite at the TOTW or save a visit there for when we have more time. Are the restaurants in the Hilton any good?

On our recent trip we did this grand canyon tour. It was very good fun, and you get to see where they new Sky Bridge is going to be built - its very wrong! They say it will be capable of supporting the weight of 72 fully-loaded 747's. I may prefer to see a few stacked up on it first before I walk out there.

Thanks Mat, their Grand Canyon Super Deluxe Air / Helicopter Tour looks like the sort of thing I'm looking for. There are just so many tour companies doing trips these sorts of trips so it's good to get the names of ones others have already used.

The whole skybridge thing just looks wrong, wrong , wrong! I'm going to need plenty of alcohol in me before I step foot on the perpsex floor at Ghostbar, never mind a see through bridge out on over the canyon. All the money in the world wouldn't get me out on that bridge!!. [:$]

Last time I went to Vegas, we had dinner at the Voodoo Lounge (Rio) restaurant (amazing!) before heading up to the bar above, which is one of the best in town IMHO Ð and you don't have to pay the cover at the bar if you eat at the restaurant.

The House of Blues (Mandalay) is awesome too, and is great for gigs. We saw Oasis and Kasabian there this summer Ð the venue's about the size of the London Astoria, which is perfect.

We also liked the Tilted Kilt at the Rio. Though it's clearly a 'blokes' bar... just check out the waitresses and you'll see what I mean [:I]
