Sorry, sorry, sorry, it's taken so long to write this. [:I]

For peeps who don't know, we (my husband & I :D) have just returned from our honeymoon, taking advantage of the 'Great Escapade' fare. This is a 'round the world' ticket offered by Virgin, Air New Zealand, Singapore and Silkair. We chose the business class fare so that we could take advantage of the VS UCS.

We combined the honeymoon trip with a fact finding mission in Auckland, because we plan to move there next year. Our route was...

2 nights in Hong Kong (Peninsula Hotel)
5 nights Sydney (Intercontinental)
3 nights Christchurch (The Heritage)
10 nights Auckland (The Garden Room)
2 nights Rarotonga (The Pacific)
3 nights Aitutaki (The Pacific)

I'll try and focus on the flights and hotels (with a few pics
;)) but for peeps who would like to know a bit more, please see our blog: http://www.milliemoomclean.blogspot.com.

Here's a bit of background. I'm 30 and the OH is 36. We have no kids and like a wee bit of luxury when we're on holiday. We've travelled to the Caribbean in PE before and the OH has been UC, but this was a first for the both of us for the UCS and the new Clubhouse. As we're moving the the other side of the planet, we plan on making a few LH trips in the coming years. We are by no means rich, and saved a long time for these fares (approx £3500 pp). I would much rather wait and save the money to go in a premium cabin, than fly in econommy for a LH flight. So people think I'm daft and would rather go on 3 r=trips for what I pay for 1, but hey, whatever floats ya boat [8D]

Edinburgh - LHR 12/11/05 BA 1449
We arrived in plenty of time to check-in for this flight as my sister gave us a lift to the airport. There's not much to say about EDI but we did see John Lesslie arrive on a flight from London. We'd tried to check-in online for this flight, which we could do, but it wasnt allowing us to change seats, so we didn't bother. We used the self-serve kiosks at the airport to check-in so we could chose our seats, then dropped off our bags. I wasn't sure how we'd get on with having sooooo much luggage, but nobody batted an eyelid on any of our flights. BA still don't have catering on their domestic flights so we asked to grab what we wanted off the trolly before we boarded. The seats were good, and service OK. The views coming into LHR were great.

When we arrived at LHR, we had to collect our luggage and trot off to terminal 3 to check-in for our VS flight to Hong Kong. What a hike! It took about 15/20mins to walk there, but when we took the lift up to departures, it opened up to all the VS desks. We kept walking until we reached the UC line. There was a chap checking passports before you enter the check-in area, but as we were the only people there, that wa sno problem. The check-in girls were very friendly and busy munching cakes when we arrived at the desk. All very straight forward (confirmed our seat reservations / 2&3K) and before we knew it, we were on our way to the Ch via fast track security. The queue was just as long as the standard queue, so we didn't save much time here.

The Clubhouse...what can I say. What a great way to start the trip. As soon as we arrived we were asked what we'd like to drink. The CH wasn't busy, but not too quiet either. I kept to Champagne whilst the OH started on the G&Ts. OH got a bit of a shock when the head of UK L&P for Standard Life walked in. LOL :D We both pre-booked treatments via email, so OH had his haircut while I had a pedicure. I was told that I couldn't have a full pedicure because of problems with the lights ??? hummmm not sure why they couldn't have plugged in an extra lamp if they needed more light. That said, the treatment was great and included a scalp and neck massage. After that we decided to have a meal. The food was very good and I'm glad we had a proper meal before getting on the flight. We then had a few more drinks before heading down to the gate for boarding.

LHR - Hong Kong VS200 12/11/05
There was a slight delay in boarding (can't remember why) so it was a bit of a scrum to get on. Ahhhhhh the joys of turning left. It wasn't long before we were offered Champagne and we got ourselves comfortable. Unfortunatley, my suite was not as clean as I would like, so I had to whip out the wipes to clean wine stains etc off the wall of the suite and the wee table under the lamp. The IFBT introduced herself and I requested a hydrating hand treatment. I can't say I was overly impressed with the menu, there just didn't seem to be that much choice. We did have a meal though and mine was quite tasty, but OH's vege option was fairly poor. After messing around on the Mac for a bit and a failed attempt to watch 'Festival' (please don't waste your time, I turned it off after about 20 mins, what a load of tripe) I asked for my bed to be made up. Ohhhhhhhh there's nothing like snuggling into a soft duvet on a LH flight. I had a great sleep, but OH found it a bit hot and kept waking up. After about a 6 hour sleep I woke up and hogged the toilet before everyone else woke up. I'd taken advantage of the sleep suit and did manage to overcome my fear of airline toilets. I was called by the IFBT before breakfast and had a great treatment. My hand were sooooooo soft.
Right, now onto breakfast. Why O Why offer 'lightly toasted bagels' if all you can manage is 'cremated unediable bagel' ?? -10 points for breakfast as I couldn't actually eat it!

We disembarked quite promptly and didn't have to wait long at immigration. We'd arranged a Rolls Royce transfer with the Peninsula, and we weren't disappointed. The journey was very smooth (although the bottles of water we were offered were warm) and took about 40mins to get to the hotel. As we pulled up to the hotel the car door was opened for us and we were greeted by name...nice touch. Check-in was very smooth and as we were escorted to our room we were told that they'd upgraded the room to one at the front of the hotel with a better view (humpf no suite then [:I]) I have to say, the pen gave us the best 'honeymoon gifts'. we had Champagne, flowers, fruit, silver plated photo frame and chocolates. After about 10 mins, house keeping brought us some jasmine tea. Lovellllly. The room was very spacious and the bathroom had a TV in it! I was a bit disappointed in the cost of laundry/ironing services. The room didn't have an iron/board and because they offer the ironing service I felt too embrassed to ask for one. Glad I packed the travel iron.
Breakfasts at the Pen were excellent and dinner at Felix was something else. I'd highly recommend a cocktail with midori in it, but I can't rememebr waht they were called. Very yummy though. We spent about £150 for both of us and that included 3 courses, wine and cocktails.

Wow..... sounds a great trip so far and it's only up to Hong Kong!

Looking forward to the continuation of the TR

A colleague at work emigrated last year from London to NZ but warned that the traffic in Auckland was terrible, some days it took him 15 minutes to drive into work (vs the 1 1/2 hours for the same sort of distance in London) :) Seriously though he loves it over there and says it was the best thing he has ever done. He's even converted to the egg chasing game now!

Millie - your TR will be every bit as good as the bits of the Blog I read, which were brilliant. Welcome back, and I'm really pleased you seem to have had a great time.

Now get back to the rest of the review! :D

Best wishes

FYI, you might want to have a look at this excellent extension - I find it very very useful [y]. Not just good in case of a crash, but say if you want to completely shut down your PC with a long post in the middle of editing....:)

Now, where was IÉ.

Ahhh yes, time to leave the Pen. On our last day, we checked out in the morning and they stored our luggage for us. TheyÕd already confirmed the return RR transfer when we checked in, so that was all organised. After a wander around Victoria Peak and Aberdeen Harbour, we came back to the hotel for afternoon tea. What a treat! WeÕd reserved a table in advance, so I could help but look smug when we walked past the long queues of people. We well and truly stuffed our facesÉyum! There was a selection of sandwiches lots of different wee cakes, scones and of course a huge selection of teas.

We had a stroll around the shopping arcade (trying to spend the last of our change) before collecting our luggage and catching the Rolls Royce back to the airport.

Hong Kong Ð Sydney 15/11/05 VS200
Our chap from the RR helped with our luggage right up to the check-in desk. Check-in seemed to take a while, even though we were the only ones in the queue. Not sure why. All very friendly and helpful though. Our chap continued to help us with luggage right up to security, which was great, and then he looked surprised when we gave him a big tip. There was no priority lane so it took about 20mins to get through and then onto the lounge. The HK lounge is small, but a nice little oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of the airport. The menu looked great and I really wanted to eat before boarding, but there was no chance of that after stuffing our faces at afternoon tea. We had a few drinks and watched people coming and going.

Boarding was a bit late, but the priority lane was easy to spot so that was good. We had the same seats as we did on Saturday, but they were cleaner than last time (wine stains still visible though). We were offered champagne quite quickly and the IFBT came round again. I asked for the same as last time (hydrating hand treatment) and not to be woken if asleep. Both our evening meals were quite tasty, but I canÕt remember what we had. Actually, thinking about it, I donÕt think Duncan was overly impressed, but he did eat all of it. The red vino was very drinkable and I had a few glasses to try and see me through watching the worst film in history ÔFestivalÕ but gave up after half an hour. After a few hours kip, I beat the crowds to the toilets (which were still quite clean) to freshen up and put some slap on. When I returned to my seat, the IFBT came across, so I had another treatment before breakfast. WeÕd pre-ordered our breakie, and didnÕt make the same mistake as last time. I had a bacon roll, which was fabby. I donÕt eat a lot of red meat, but that was yummy.

There didnÕt appear to be any priority lanes at Sydney, but as we were one of the first off the flight, we were through quite quick. We did get stopped for not declaring chocolate truffles, which seemed a bit odd, but they were very friendly about it. We needed money, so headed to the cash pointÉ.and then to anotherÉ.and then to another and then we realised that all the ATMs in the airport were down. The information/help desk were useless and didnÕt believe me when I said all the machines were down. Luckily we had some Sterling, so changed just enough to catch the shuttle bus into the city.

We knew we wouldnÕt be able to check-in to the Intercontinental, as we arrived at about 8.30am. Reception staff were very helpful and gave us a key to an Ôearly arrivals roomÕ. It was a bit weird, with people sleeping in chairs and there was only one bathroom. We quickly freshened up, stored our luggage and headed off for a wee wander around circular quay and the Rocks. After a quick bite to eat, we returned to the hotel at about 1.30pm. The room still wasnÕt ready and to be honest we felt a bit forgotten about. We eventually got the room at about 2.45 and it was worth the wait. WeÕd reserved a ÔGrand Harbour View RoomÕ but we were given a ÔGrand Harbour View SuiteÕ. It was huge and had panoramic windows, which looked out to the bridge, around to the Opera House and then onto the Botanical Gardens. It even had 2 bathrooms! It had everything you would expect in a quality hotel room (iron & board, robes, slippers etc) and house keeping seemed good most of the time, but they did neglect to re-set the alarm clock, so on our first night we were woken at about 4am ggrrrrrrrrr. After about half an hour of being in the suite, a nice chap brought us a bottle of bubbles. The lobby/reception area of the hotel gives the appearance of a mainly business hotel, but the location and rooms make the hotel great for tourists.

After 5 nights at the Intercontinental, we caught the shuttle back to the airport to catch our first Air New Zealand flight of the trip. It was a morning flight so we thought weÕd just get breakfast at the lounge. Check-in was really, really busy and I think most people would have taken at least an hour to get through. Thankfully, we walked past all the queues, and joined the business class check-in which only had a couple of people waiting. It was lovely to be able to jump the queues, but I did feel sorry for all those people waiting. The check-in girl was very friendly and gave us directions to the lounge. The lounge was huge and had a great breakfast buffet. I managed to pick up the free wi-fi from the 1st class lounge, which was a bonus.

Sydney Ð Christchurch 21/11/05 NZ182

Boarding was a bit of a scrum, but it wasnÕt long before we had a glass of champagne in hand and were getting comfy. ItÕs a bit strange sitting at the front of plane and having everyone walk past you, watching you drink champagne. The seats are quite big, but if someone reclines, you feel very penned in. Lunch was lovely (tiger prawns and salmon) and Duncan finished it off with a huge measure of Baileys and then slept for most of the flight. IFE was a bit naff. If you wanted to watch a movie, it was just what was on the big screen at the front of the cabin (only 4 rows in business). Service was excellent though.

Unfortunately, our arrival in Christchurch coincided with a southerly from the Antarctic! Brrrrrrrrrrrr Twas a bit chilly to say the least. We took shuttle to the Heritage Hotel, which is a very central hotel in Christchurch. It has two buildings, with the old building housing all the suites, restaurant & spa. The suite was what we were expecting. More of a holiday apartment. Just what we needed though, as it had full laundry facilities and a kitchen. TheyÕd left us a gift of fancy chocolates, which we didnÕt eat. The hotel was a bit spooky. The corridors reminded me of the hotel in ÔThe ShiningÕ eeekkkkk.

Christchurch Ð Auckland 24/11/05 NZ526

When we arrived back at the airport, there was a queue for check-in. There were plenty of staff milling about trying to get you to use the self service machines, but we had paper tickets, so no can do. The check-in guy was nice and confirmed or FF numbers were on the system. I asked him whether we could use the business lounge, even though this part of our ticket was economy, as they donÕt offer business Christchurch to Auckland. I canÕt say I was pleased with his response, something along the lines of ÒItÕs not as if your FC GoldÓ hummpf!

Security was all very straight forward and we headed to the lounge to see if they let us in. There was a lovely chap on the desk who looked at our tickets and showed us straight through. ThatÕs more like it. The lounge was quite small, but well stocked. I used the internet (no wifi) and we both had something to eat and drink. It was quite noisy with lots of business bods using phones etc.

Boarding was OK but made better because IÕd asked at check-in to have seats as close to the front as possible. Drinks and biscuits were offered and before we knew it, we were in Auckland.

We took a shuttle bus to the accommodation we booked in Devonport. Devonport is where we plan on moving to, so it was nice to be in the area. The Devonport Garden Room is a small self-contained ÔroomÕ behind the ownerÕs Victorian villa. It was lovely, with great hosts and they let us plug my Mac into their internet, so I could use Skpe loads to call my mum. We were there for 10 nights. For lots more info, see our Blog.

Auckland Ð Rarotonga 4/11/05 NZ022

Our 1st impressions of the check-in at Auckland Int were great. Off we trotted to the separate business class check-in lounge, where we then waited for over 30mins. What a shambles! There were only 2 girls on the desk and it was potluck who got served next. Then a 3rd person came on to help. By this point people that were just walking into the check-in area were getting served before us. There were also some very unhappy people who were just in front of us who had been told by someone this is where they check-in for their bus Thai flight, but the girl on the desk had to tell them they were in the wrong place. Lots of angry faces all round.
Once checked in, thereÕs a small security counter and then an escalator, which takes you up to the main security bag check. This was weird because you walk off the escalator into the front of the queue for all the security. There was no one there to say Òthis wayÓ so we just walked to the front and hoped no one shouted at us. We then went onto the lounge, which was very big, but the food was quite poor (although more choices were brought out after about an hour) and busy.

There was more room on this aircraft with a couple of extra rows of business class seats. We had dinner, which was lovely, but staff werenÕt up to the usual standard. A chap sat in the middle row had put his huge carry on in the locker above us, so we had to take the persons next to us. The middle row overheads are smaller. This didnÕt cause any problems, as everyone seemed to find space for their luggage.

Arrival at Raro was quite funny, with a band playing in the arrivals hall. We were straight through and approached the desk for Pacific Resorts. It wasnÕt long before we were on our way to the Pacific Resort. It was quite late when we arrived and there werenÕt many guests about. WeÕd booked the best villa, right on the beach. It was huge! There was sparkles waiting in the fridge for us and the porter showed us all around the villa. We were given sarongs and beaded necklacesÉ..Duncan didnÕt want his though LOL.

Image

Image

Image

The bar area was nice (quite small) but I wouldnÕt rate the quality of the cocktails. Breakfasts were OK, nothing special, but the service was good. Muri beach isnÕt as busy as I thought it would be. There was plenty of choice in the restaurants and our evening meal was very, very good.

ThereÕs a good mix of rooms, but IÕd recommend the villas. ThereÕs nothing much in walking distance from the resort. Just a shop and a couple of restaurants. Lots of other accommodations, but to be honest, thereÕs not any need to leave the resort.

Image

Image

Image

After two nights we took a quick flight to the Pacific Resort on Aitutaki. We were really worried about the luggage allowance because by this point weÕd gone up to about 64kg! There were no problems though.

Arrival at Aitutaki wasnÕt great as the resort rep wasnÕt there to meet us. When we arrived, they looked a bit surprised to see us. The receptionist was really starting to get on my nerves. She kept asking the same questions over and over again and I had to spell my name about 5 timesÉshe even had it written in front of her! After about 10 mins (during which time weÕd been handed a drink) she started to show us around the resort and to our room. She then had to run back and get the right key to the room. I have to say though, we soon had a smile on our face when we saw the villa. WeÕd only booked the cheapest room (beachfront) because itÕs quite a pricey resort, but weÕd been given the beachfront villa, the best accommodation they have. It wasnÕt long before there was a chap at the door with champagne.

Image

Image

Image

The villa had a huge living area, steps up to a large bedroom which led through to a kind of dressing area, and then onto the bathroom. There was an outdoor shower as well as the double indoor shower. Housekeeping were very good, and there were always plenty of towels. The Villa had a deck, which you could access from the bedroom and the lounge. It was large with enough space for two loungers, umbrella, table and two chairs. There were steps leading down to the beach, with another outdoor shower to clean the sand off.

The bar area was small but friendly. We never used the pool, but it looked beautiful and was well maintained. The sun loungers around the pool all had rolled up towels placed on them with little flowers. The restaurant was pleasant, and on the whole the food was very good, just not very imaginative and started to get a bit repetitive. The staff were friendly, but could do with some training. Even the headwaiter struggled to open our wine and when he did, he lost half of it over the table. Breakfasts were excellent and served at the table, unlike the buffet set up on Raro.

Image

After 3 nights, it was time to leave and that was the end of the honeymoon.

The flights back wereÉ..

Aituataki Ð Rarotonga
Rarotonga Ð LA
LA - London
London Ð Edinburgh

We left on the Thursday afternoon and didnÕt get back to Edinburgh till early Saturday evening.

Surprisingly, Rarotonga has a business lounge. It was small and soon filled up. We were first in though, so had grabbed good seats, and started to tuck into sandwiches. IÕd say the lounge was about 20f x 10f and only had one toilet. Not big, so you can imagine everyoneÕs faces when this family comes in with a screaming baby. The older kids werenÕt too bad, but why oh why didnÕt they take they baby outside until they got it settled. Needless to say, a few people left the lounge, us included. It wasnÕt long till the flight, so we just had a wander about and prayed we werenÕt going to be sat next to the family.

Boarding was quite quick, and we both sighed relief when the family kept walking to the back of the bus. Drinks were offered and drunk. IÕm not sure why, but we were offered a breakfast ? DoesnÕt really make sense to me at about 11pm? Unfortunately, the flight goes via Papette and everyone has to offload. This wouldnÕt normally be so bad, but we arrived during a tropical storm. By the time we got to the lounge, we were soaked to the bone. I stood in the ladies room for about 20mins, trying to dry my shoes and jeans under the hand dryer. The lounge was a good size, but filled up as there were already people in there. Yet again the family arrived, screaming baby in tow, much to the delight of the sleeping passengers. Thankfully, it shut up after a few minutes. There wasnÕt much of a food selection and the time did drag a bit.

On boarding the aircraft for a second time, I rolled up my jeans, took off my shoes and waded to the plane. It was lot easier to dry out this time. We did manage to get a little bit of sleep on the flight and we were offered yet another breakfast not long before landing.

LAX, where do I start. Hell on earth sounds about right. Thankfully we were one of the first in the queue for immigration. They took our pics, fingerprints and quizzed us about or jobs for about 10 minutes. They also asked if weÕd been to LA before. Gawd, weÕre only transiting ! We then had to collect our luggage, which didnÕt come off as a priority. By the looks of it, only a handful did. Then we had another security check. Did I mention the two forms we had to fill in on the plane. Then it got very confusing. WeÕd been told on the plane that weÕd have to collect our luggage and then check-in for our next flight. Fine I thought. Then we came across a lady shouting at everyone, saying that if you had a connecting flight, you had to queue up to hand over your luggage. I got all flustered and started to panic because I didnÕt know how they match our luggage up to our VS flight. Non of the staff were helpful or friendly. We also had to unlock all our cases. After that ordeal, we then tried to find our way to the VS check-in which took about 15mins. When we arrived, none of the desks were open. We had to wait about an hour, by which point there were Y passengers snaked all over the place because they wouldnÕt let you start to queue in the allocated check-in area. Thankfully we were straight to the desk (via yet more security checks) and were greeted by the most miserable person weÕd ever come across. I donÕt think she even acknowledged we were there. She just took our tickets and hand them back again after a series of tuts and sighs. Very very poor VS! Off we trotted to a queue for the escalator which was held up because of more security checks and then at the top we got to the security bag checks which took about 15mins. Guess what, on the other side, less than 10 yards from where you collect your bags, there was another guy wanting to see your boarding pass! By this point I was ready to kill, so we ran to the lounge for some drinks!

The lounge that VS use at LAX is quite a decent size, but did get crowded. Food is limited but VS passengers get an extra couple of choices, which are very poor. TheyÕd be better off making sure there is a bread basket and some fruit maybe.

Priority boarding worked well and we in our suites in know time. Duncan was made up as they were showing Wallace & Grommit the movie. Food was good although the soup wasnÕt very hot. Duncan raved about his desert which was a chocolate triangle thing. Service was good but I didnÕt get a treatment this time around. When we landed at LHR we were sat on the tarmac for about 45mins. Very boring but I got to see lots of VS metal from the window. I was looking forward to Revivals, but it did take a while to find it. The girl on the desk was very friendly and pointed us in the direction of the showers. IÕve never seen much info about Revivals so wasnÕt sure what to expect. You walk through and there are lots of doors either side, which open up to your own private bathroom with shower, sink, toilet, hairdryer and toiletries. Plenty of big fluffy towels as well. I couldnÕt get the radio station I wanted, but that was no hardship. After a quick shower, I walked back through to the lounge area where Duncan was waiting for me. He only wanted a smoothie but I opted for the smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Yum. We werenÕt sure if weÕd still be able to get food as it was about 1pm, but we did and people after us did.

Then it was the last leg with BA back to Edinburgh. Unfortunately we missed our slot and had to sit on the tarmac again for about an hour. By the time we got to Edinburgh I was shattered. At least we only live 10mins from the airport.

Overall, we had an amazing trip. I couldnÕt have asked for anything more.

On our GE, we will only have 4 nights in the Cooks. Our first thought was to stay on Rarotonga. Having read a few reviews, we're thinking of going to Aikutaki instead. Given your experience, how would you rate the two islands?

Luke, I'd defo skip Raro and go to Aitutaki if you only have 4 nights.

We planned to spend our 5 nights on Aitutaki until Air NZ changed the flights times which ment we'd miss the last flight of the day.

Ohhhhhh forgot to say.......

Believe it or not, we were watching a bit of a film at the Pacific in Aitutaki, and noticed it was a pirate copy! mad or what [V]

Thanks, Milliemoo - will just do Aitutaki, then. Not particularly looking forward to the journey there, though. We're starting from Christchurch, changing at Auckland, will arrive at Rarotonga at 3.45 am and then have four hours to kill before the first flight of the day to Aitutaki.

Oh well, we should be well rested by then:)

I don't envy you having to spend 4 hrs in Raro airport at that time of the morning (or any time of the day).

Is there not any other flights that you can get ?

You'd be able to book an early arrival at the Pacific, so that's a bonus.
