Arrived at Heathrow around 7.15am. For the first time, we had used OLCI, confirming our seats 9k and 8k [:D] There wasn't any queue at the bag drop so we were checked in very quickly. I had a lipstick in my handbag that the check-in agent suggested I put into our case. Being lipstickless and handcreamless, how would Virgin accommodate me onboard?[;)]

Once we were through fast track and into the duty free there was a notice board and a very helpful chap to explain that if you were travelling with Virgin today, you could purchase anything from duty free and then have it them delivered to you at the gate. Hooray![y] Purchased some more Lipstick and an eyebrow pencil. The cashier then told me that as the items weren't a liquid or gel I could take them on board [:?]

We made it to the Clubhouse which I had not been in since last October. I really like the new additions Virgin have made to it. It feels much more spacious. We treated ourselves to breakfast. I had the waffles with syrup and MrG had a rather large English breakfast. The waiting staff were excellent, the best I have ever seen in the LHR Clubhouse. We were really looked after[:)] After breakfast we wandered up to the garden. Here, two very happy bunnies passed a good half an hour! Me, watching various aircraft come and go and MrG playing with the Jaguar XK. He even made me take some pics of him in it[8D] After indulging ourselves we went into the skylounge and spent the rest of the time relaxing and reading. I also had a little play with the huge blinds in the skylounge[}:)]

About 10.30am, the flight still hadn't been called but we decided to make our way to Gate 32 When we got there, a huge queue snaking around the departure area greeted us. Although the priority boarding sign was there, prority boarding certainly wasn't in evidence[V] so we joined the queue. I was subjected to a body search before I boarded. It shows that security were doing their job properly, no problems there.

Sorry, but I couldn't see the name of the aircraft we were to fly on.
I must admit I was excited at the prospect of being at the 'front' of the bus for a change. Imagine my surprise to see a gentleman sitting in my seat (9k) looking very settled, thank you very much. I mentioned this to the CC member near by. Her response was something along the lines of 'it's an empty flight today, choose another seat'
[:(!][:(!][V][V] adding 'you don't mind, do you?' Well, what can you say? 'Actually, we pre booked these seats because we wanted to sit in them'[?] We moved across to 10 and 11a. We looked at each other and in the words of the penguins from Madagasdar, said 'well this sucks' Meanwhile, the passenger whose seat I was now sitting in arrived. I apologised to him and explained the situation. He went and found another seat. While all this was going on, Mr 'seat steeler' sat there totally oblivious![xx(]

While all this was all going on I had managed to bag a glass of champagne and a sleep suit. We decided that we would back to the next section of UC and moved to 16 and 17a. There were only four other pax back there and it was much quieter. We departed around 11.30am and once we were airborne, I had a bellini, well two actually [:I] As we were enjoying our drinks Mr 'seat steeler' approached us and asked us why we had moved? [ii]The cheek of the man! We told him that we had wanted more privacy. I really wanted to tell him the truth but decided against it. I wasn't going to let him spoil the rest of our flight.

The rest of the flight improved greatly. As UC was not full, we were treated to a first class service by the cabin crew. The one lady who looked after us was particularly good. She kept us fed and watered throughout the whole flight which was about 10hrs 29mins long. We both had the Mozzarella salad to start with and the lamb shank for main course. This was washed down with a very nice sauvingon blanc, followed by vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. The food was fine, the lamb a little dry, but very enjoyable.

Made the most of V-port on this trip. Spent a few hours listening to Guns 'n' Roses, Johnny Cash and Girls Aloud. I also watched 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' a harrowing film about Ireland in the 1920's. Thankfully I don't think any other pax saw me blubbing at the end.

As I expected I was called for a treatment by the IFBT. I had opted for the nourishing hand treatment. Had a nice chat with the IFBT. I told her how I thought the snooze pack was cheap and nasty. She agreed and said that most other crew felt the same. I mentioned that when I had requested some moisturiser on this flight, they didn't have any and I was given a dodgy choc mint lip balm instead. I told her about V-flyer which she said she had heard of from another pax and gave her a V-flyer card. She said she would look in sometime.

After the treament we spent some time at the bar, necking a few cranberry juices. Just before we landed, afternoon tea was served. Toasted sandwiches and a huge slab of ginger cake, nice![y]

Overall a good Virgin experience. I think the seat situation was badly handled. Surely passengers should be seated in their assigned seats for take off, then allowed to move around after take off? This appeared very unprofessional. The overall condition of the suites was poor too. Most of the ottomans were frayed and ripped on the top and the rest of the suite covered in pen marks. However, the UCS was a very comfortable way to pass a 10 hour flight. Top marks to the CC who really looked after us. And finally to Mr 'seat steeler', I hope someone does the same to you on your next flight![}:)]

Thanks for the TR[y]. With reagrds to the whole 'seat stealer' situation I think it would of been best to of just told the CC you wanted to sit in your original seats and ask him to of moved, nipped it in the bud right at the start. It could of course of been a genuine mistake and he thought he was in the right seat, the CC should of just checked his boarding card, didn't seem they handled it to well.

Thanks for the TR MrsG. As you pointed out, the lack of original CC proaction simply meant knock on inconvenience for other PAX not only yourself!Interesting that the stealer should ask you why you moved - perhaps it triggered a realisation that he might have been in the wrong.

Look forward to the return!

Well actually you can say that and I would have done but then I'm morphing into a Grumpy Old Lady. Look what happened. You sat in 10 and 11A and when those passengers came, they had to move. They could have insisted on their allocated seats and you would have had to move again.....and again if once more you picked someone else's seat....and again [V]

The cabin crew should have been more proactive and sorted it out there and then for you

Now, there's a mix...[oo]

As to the seat stealer I think the CC should have dealt with it and the way it was handled was poor. The least the CC should have done was point out to you which seats were definitely not occupied. It had the real potential to cause upset to you and others; what if the person whose seat you moved to had insisted on having that seat ? I think for the price you pay to sit in UCS you should get the seat you asked for / were given.

Thanks for the TR

My understanding that pre-take off you had to sit in your allocated seat, and then once seat-belt signs turned off you can move to other empty seats if you wish.

Great TR - thanks for sharing. :o)

Thanks for the replies guys[:D]

Regarding the seat situation, we were also told by the CC member that the gentleman in question had moved to my seat because he didn't like his original one! [xx(] Still, it ended up as a minor inconvenience to what was a great flight.

Our return trip was made from SFO via EWR with CO to BDA where we now live. I've decided not to post those trips as they were too dull to mention[|)]

This is crazy. So you're saying the that CC were aware that someone else had stolen your seat but did nothing about it? I, as you and I'm sure many others, book my preferred seats weeks/months in advance and I book them for very good reasons. If this is the attitude of cabin crew, do I take it that next time I am unable to get my favourite seat I can just go and grab it and the CC will not tell me to move? Ridiculous. Virgin should do something about this.

Have to agree with other posters here - he would not be sitting 'settled' for very long! I would ask the person to move and if they refused I would then ask the crew to sort it out.

As Mat said, if you want a different seat to that you're in, then you should move there only once all other passengers are seated post take off. The crew make announcements along the line of 'We know there's spare seats so feel free to move to another seat but only after take off' specifically for Economy passengers but it surely applies to everyone.

Thanks for the trip report, by the way.

Thanks,

David.

Have had 'Mr Seat Stealer' (and even Miss Seat Stealer) on my flights before. If they have a coveted seat of mine, i'll always ask them what seat is printed on their boarding pass stub - and show them mine to illustrate the fact that i am supposed to be in that seat, and that i intend to sit in that seat. If they wont budge, a quiet word to the FSM usually does the trick.

Though one time i did this and the person had the same seat number as me! The efficiency of check-in! [;)]

Thanks,
Sarah

All those 'Assertiveness' courses the Civil Service sent me on years ago, obviously taught me nothing![:p][:p]

Looking back now, we should have said something. MrG who is usually a forthcoming kind of guy, decided that it wasn't worth the fuss. Other pax in the cabin were staring at us and we looked like the ones causing trouble. If the CC are letting this kind of thing happen, then it really does not help fight your cause.

As V-Flyer member, I promise next time to stick up for myself![;)][;)]

Yup, that's exactly what I'd have said [:D] Perhaps CC don't always acknowledge that pax research where they'd like to sit, and if they fly regularly, they will more than likely have a favourite seat [ii]

Like Sarah, I'd have had a word with Mr Seat Stealer in the first instance - usually a nice quiet word and examination of boarding pass will result in a move [:)]

The only time I've ever had someone sat in my allocated seat was when I was given an op-up but didn't know til I got on the plane [:D]

Cheers

This happens a lot on domestic US flights, most people just stand in the aisle with boarding card in hand and say 'I think you have my seat, can you just check your boarding card', then if you both have the same number the CC come take care of the situation.

Thanks buns[:D]

I was lucky enough to find myself in the clubhouse again last week (must write trip report!)and had some fantastic food[y]

Now that phrase two has been opened, VS have got it spot on. We had a few bad experiences last year when they were building the new clubhouse ie no air conditioning and no space! That is now a distant memory, it was certainly worth the wait[:D]

Hope you have a great time on your next visit[:D]

Lol I passed a simular comment to the CSS on my last flight- her response was 'hehe you should be so lucky'

Interesting about these announcements, it seems the FSM is making the normal announcements but people are ignoring them even in Y!! On my last trip two guys just moved straight to an exit row- and the crew encouraged it- this was right when the FSM was making the 'dont move until after take off' announcement.

Exit rows need to be populated during takeoff and landing I believe.
