Well after my first time in Hong Kong I have to say this is truly a wonderful city. I loved every minute of ot from the minure we arrived till we had to leave. Great restaurants , great nightlife , great hotels, just fantastic.

Regretfully we had to leave the luxurious Island Shangri La and had booked our limo for 20.30 and holding onto one of the rooms till 17.00. We then decided to call Virgin and get the car to pick us up and head off to see what the clubhouse was like and do some final shopping rather than sitting around looking at each other in the hotel reception.

Bang on 1730 the S class pulled up and rushed us off to the very impressive Hong Kong airport. We were greeted when checking in by a very attentive VS agent, and we were quickly through passport control , on the monorail and into the very impressive Clubhouse upstairs above all the shops. Eva Air share this lounge with VS.

We placed ourselves very comfortably in from of the large TV and ordered some food and (Chicken and mash-it was really good). Afterwards I decided to try the showers out to freshen up before we flew to London. Excellent facilities considering its not their main hub in my opinion , well done VS [^].

Then on CNN the news broke about the BA 777 that landed short of the runway. Great thing to be waching prior to flying. Anyway the beer helped kill the fear.

The gate was 3 mins walk and yippee -- yes a priority boarding gate for UC. We were then greated by some very happy VS staff offing us a glass of their very best champers so rather than appearing rude I gladly accepted . and again and again. Excellent stuff indeed.

We pushed back on time , I think and once air born we chenged into the jammys and settled down into the 12hrs 55min flight.

The VA crew were simply perfect on this flight offering snacks . wine and then taking the orders for dinner.

I went for the pork parcels in soya sauce which was very nice followed by steak in a red wine sauce , that was very tasy indeed if a little under cooked for my liking ( but thats my fault , I should have said something when ordering ) followed by ice cream in a toffee / honeycomb sauce of some kind - It was brilliant -hmmm I can still taste it now.

Watched '30 days of Darkness' which frightened the crap out of me [:I] and then driffted off to sleep to dream of vampires chasing me around Upper Class. Once again its a pity the suites dont recline back a little further to get into the perfect 'movie watching position' (whatever that is?)

I rose from the 'cript' with about 3 hrs to go and soon afer breakfast arrived , they had misplaced my order so asked me again what I wanted and in fact gave me nearly everything on the menu - happy days [:D] .

On arrival the captain announced ' ladies and gentlemen , welcome to Heathrow. Unlike our competitors we are do our best to get you onto the runway'. We cracked up, but I would think nobody at this stage knew the severity of what had actually happened.

We arrived exactly at 5am and was off and heading towards T1 within 15 mins of landing.

Once again VS put on the perfect show , 5* all the way,

K.

Thanks for the TR, I am thinking of a trip to HKG soon.

I am pretty certain they knew the severity some 18 hours after the incident though.

Just out of interest, do ork parcels taste of hobbit?

Not sure of the professionalism of a pilot taking, if you'll excuse the phrase, the Mick out of a competitor air crash

All I'll say is 'if you live in a glass house, don't throw stones'.

It could have just as easily been a VS aircraft suffering a similar fate.

Can't say I can remember taking the mick out of a plane crash, but ready to be corrected.

I agree with you regarding the seats not having a perfect 'movie-watching recline' setting!

I know that Virgin tries to keep things lighthearted at times (I've heard 'We will now dim the cabin lights to improve the appearance of the cabin crew for take-off.') but in this instance the pilot's comment seems in poor taste.

Was that exactly what was said and how it was phrased???

I somehow find it hard to believe that any pilot would make such a comment regardless of who he/she was batting for..[n]

Yes in so many ways thats the way it was said. I think if you find anybody else who was on this flight we all immediatly laughed and then thought of actually what had been said. When we were leaving HK there was no idea of exactly what had happened but maybe the pilot was in the same position as well.

Thanks for the TR, I always love the food on the HKG route!

I feel that the comment from the pilot was in rather bad taste. [V]

It certainly was but anyway the food is certainly a lot better than what I have had going west last year. I cannot understand why but its always like this for me in the past.

I agree that seeing that CNN News prior to boarding must have been unnerving for you all.

I find the UC seat uncomfortable when the aircraft lands, as your body, being side on, tries to come to terms with the braking motion.

Many thanks for the TRs

Hi Buns - Yes I have to agree with you that while landing it is a bit strange + uncomfortable when the brakes are hit, but only for a few seconds really.I go to Barbados the end of April and its with BA and I am wondering whats its going to be like landing 'backwards' -
