After a delay leaving manchester - plus using the Heathrow flight connection centre which i'm never convinced is any quicker than simply walking between terminals - i got the the clubhouse 45 minutes behind schedule but still in plenty of time for a haircut & some lunch.

After leaving a guest name at reception for a fellow vflyer's mrs, i got settled into a couple of cocktails & rubbed shoulders at the deli with Dominic Monaghan aka Charlie from Lost & Merry from the Lord Of The Rings films. He was dressed exactly like Charlie complete with thumb ring & black nail polish.

got down to the gate where there was some confusion as to whether to let UC & PE board due to the fact that the plane interior was as hot as the surface of the sun due to inadequate/non-working ground air con systems. i can't imagine how bad it must have been in economy - up front they were handing out cold towels on trays of ice rather than the usual hot ones. The plane was Mystic Maiden

Once we got airborne things cooled down quickly & the usual excellent service got underway. i counted 4-5 empty seats in UC. Lunch was ok but i wasn't blown away by what i got. i went for the ham terrine, the cheese was way too overpowering so it was just as well there was hardly any of it & there was a slightly odd wet basil/spinach sunstance under the rest of the veg. for dessert i had the summer pudding which was much smaller than i'd imagined & needed something on the side to offset the very sharp fruit.

i settled in to catch up on the latest movies, one of which was Ghost starring Ewan McGregor & there was one brief scene where he was on a VA flight in UC which was a bit surreal!

Afternoon tea brought a smile to my face as one of the crew came round with a proper old fashioned 3-tier cake display stand filled with little cupcakes, or fairy cakes as we knew them as kids. they looked home made as well which added to the charm.

Again as last time i flew this route the plane was looking a bit ragged around the edges - the right hand privacy panel in my seat was hanging loose from the backing.

3 movies later & after some very light turbulence we were on the ground in boston about 15 minutes late which was more than made up for by a completely empty customs hall

missing out on 45 mins of CH time? TSK !

Ohh and cup cakes are not the same as fairy cakes !

Fairy cakes (or butterfly cakes) have a bit of the top chopped off, some of the sponge middle sccped out and the bit you cut off is then cut in half and then inserted into the icing placed in the hole t arranged like wings whereas a cup cake just has icing put on the top.

Oh and hope you had a good time in Boston

Sounds like a very enjoyable flight, its funny how its always the little details that make people smile, such as the cakes on an old fashioned tiered cake stand....now if only they would bring back the basket with polos & lip balm that I have read so much about! :D
