After two glorious weeks in the sun, it was time for the return leg. I had very much wanted to be on the 747 as I thought the bubble was brilliant last year, but the A330 left at an earlier time, and as it was new, it was a chance to try the new PE product.

We went straight to the empty PE line and were asked by one of the women at the end of it if we wanted to upgrade to Upper. I said that as far as I knew they didn't have that on the plane we were on, she kind of shrugged and laughed, and we left it at that. The guy who checked our bags seemed to be a bit on auto-pilot as he asked us 3 times if we'd had a nice holiday, it was a bit like when you go to a new hairdresser and they try and make conversation.

At the gate, there didn't seem to be too many people around, and it was confirmed on board that it was a light load. PE were called to board, and my heart sank when I saw a couple with a toddler and a very small child in the line in front of us. As it happened, I need not have worried about them, because apart from an initial bought of crying from one of them, we did not hear a peep all flight y) .

The cabin crew swiftly brought round the welcome drinks as we settled in, and soon we were off. The economy cabin was told they could move about as there were plenty of empty seats, but were told a few times that extra legroom seats would cost them £20. I was soon to envy their ability to spread out. In our cabin there were 4 rows of 3 in the middle empty, so we too were informed we could move about once we were airborne.

I think the seats seemed very close together, admittedly when the seat is in the upright position you do have ample legroom, but, woah when the seat in front of you reclines, suddenly it feels very close! I'm only 5ft 6ish and the seat in front was touching my knees! I think rather than such a huge gap in front of row 18, they would be better evening the spacing out further down the cabin. The other problem with this also is that once someone reclines, your TV screen is also reclined and this can affect viewing. On the subject of IFE, the touch screen system is great, but only in the right hands. The person behind me prodded hard pretty much the whole way home, making for some broken periods of sleep.

After we were airborne the crew came round with drinks and then followed quickly with dinner. My Veggie partner was brought his, along with several other special meals throughout the cabin. Ours followed not long after, I opted for the same as him, it was gnocchi...

Image

He was a bit miffed, as apparently vegetarians must eat fruit for pudding and aren't allowed cheese. Luckily my mother didn't want her chocolate mousse - so he ate that. The gnocchi was diabolical, incredibly heavy and dry. In fact, the economy food going out was better. Baileys and brandy followed, and coffee and tea. The crew did a number of drinks runs during the night, and we all wanted for nothing. They were very very good!

My overall impression of PE on this plane is that it's hugely uncomfortable and a bit claustrophobic. I would certainly think twice about buying the product again, and whilst the old product is still in the bubble, I would choose that any day of the week. In fact, my mum has said she will never fly PE on the A330 again she was that uncomfortable.

Thanks for the TR. a recent discussion suggests VS have reduced pitch on PE by 1 inch on the newer planes. Being used to PE on the A346 I can imagine this makes quite a difference as I personally feel its just enough on the A346

Thanks for the TR.

I agree that the PE in the A330 feels uncomfortable and in my mind isn't worth the money. I also had someone pressing into the back of my seat when using the IFE.....it drove me nuts v(

Glad you had a sunny holiday.

Thanks for the TR...

Must admit bubble always better, but the number of trips with really dodgy/ broken seats has made me prefer the purple
It does beg the question having all that excessive room on row 18, with those sitting in the middle getting more and more peed off with people using it as a cut through... even the spacing out in that small cabin = much happier pax. But again too late..

Would be really bad form if the 330's PE pitch is actually smaller....?

I genuinely think that the PE product on this new plane is not much more of a step up than ordinary economy, ok, there is better service, but is it worth the extra hundreds of pounds? I think not. Now, if Upper is being installed, they may reconfigure it and that could all change - maybe they'll rethink the layout slightly.

Looks like it will be the back row in PE for me and Mrs Buns if and when we get the chance to be on the 330 ;)

Been there, seen it, done it buns, a couple of times now. While both myself and the present Mrs Treelo find the 330 PE perfectly acceptable, it is most definitely an inferior product to PE in a 747 bubble. I would advise the back row, if possible, although I was unable to 'request' back row seats for our May trip to MCO. The advice from VS was that the back row (25A-K) was reserved for 'families travelling together' :0 ). Don't actually know what that means - I will try and snag the back row (25A-C) at OLCI.

Yes re the back row for our April flight MAN to MCO I selected 25A C at booking flight but susbsequently got bumped out in line with the "families" policy set out above. I will try to re-bag at OLCI. Having to recline to retain leg room is one thing - being prodded in the back is another.

Errrr - NO! :(!

That said, I think that even if row 18 were to become available, I would still probably opt for row 25:

a. Normally first off the aeroplane.
b. No annoying IFE-screen-tapping from behind.
c. Proximity to the nearest accessible toilet (well, Mrs T is getting on a bit y'know ):

No, we were told that row 18 is for anyone with special requirements. In our case, there was an oldish couple and the family with the small children in those seats.

Thanks for the TR. I really feel for you having the constant "tapping" at your headrest from the person behind. We experienced this in December & for that reason (as well as the issue with less legroom) will not fly on an A330 again.

Having read (and subscribed to) the above posts about tapping on headrests etc, I musyt point out that, AFAIAW, there is absolutely no need for this to happen in PE. Don't the handsets pull out from the seats in front in this fare-class?

You are right about that, however, the more heavy handed can still cause a nuisance with them, taking them in and out. Plus, if people know there is a touch screen, most will use that.

With the lgw/man refits seat back tapping will be a feature for the 747s presumably.

Hi everyone, this is my first post. Spookily I was also on this flight and in PE. I would echo what the OP has said, it's difficult to justify the extra cost. I usually fly with US airways MAN-PHL-TPA but as Virgin was on offer at £395 MAN-MCO decided to give it a go and drive to the coast. We flew out in economy and paid £20 for the camel coloured extra legroom seats. These were great (until the person in front reclines!) and not much different to PE. When we originally got the call from CS and offered the upgrade it was £199 MAN-MCO and £139 coming back so we upgraded for the return journey to make the comparison. Overall Virgin was much better than US but it's usually 25% more expensive. I personally think that PE's only worth about £50 more than economy with extended leg-room on the A330.
