We checked in online the evening before around 930 and got Sequence 49 and 50, and had already pre-selected seats 18H and K at the 90 mark.
We arrived at the downtown Disney Check In at around 945 10am on the morning of our departure to an empty queue line and was all checked in and away within 5 minutes of arriving.
We were issued paper cards as the Passbook boarding cards are not available for the return part of the trip.
We arrived at the airport 3 hours before our flight departure at 18:30.
Car drop off was pretty quick and painless and when arriving in the terminal it was pretty quiet even for MCO.
We checked the Security check point queue lines and they were only about 15 minutes long so we decided to go and take a look around some of the retail shops landside.
At about 2 hours before we decided to head through security which although a little slow it was fine pretty standard for TSA.
Got directed to use one of the full body scanners which was a bit weird for the first time of using but pretty harmless and to be honest was less intrusive / worrying than a normal security point when you walk through the metal detector machine.
Boarded the shuttle train which once again was remarkably quiet for a Friday evening although not complaining.
We then looked around the small amount of shops and the very reduced size of duty free shop before heading to the gate to wait to board.
If you were planning to get some cheap cologne or perfume I would suggest purchasing before you head to the airport in Orlando or purchase on your way to Orlando in the Gatwick Duty free shop as a bottle of Jean Paul Gotier (excuse the spelling) was $79 normally £38 in the UK so yeah a little on the steep side, last time before the store was refitted the cost was a lot less and remember getting a large bottle of JPG for $48. There are a lot of good alcohol offers to get I got a litre of Absolut Citron for $18 and there were a lot of other vodka's including Smirnoff for $18 too for 1 litre.
Anyway enough rambling.
We walked down to the gate and on our way passed madmoiselle rouge which had complete the VS75 earlier in the day. When arriving at the gate Ladybird was waiting for us and being refilled with oil / parts checked on the engines then was refuelled.
Whilst waiting at the gate to board we saw Barberella and English Rose land into MCO and park up at the gates.
We were called to board a little earlier than stated which was good this was at 17:15.
We were boarded by special assistance, upper class, premium, then main cabin.
Upon boarding Ladybird (my first experience on a refit 747) was WOW the refit really does make it feel so much better and exclusive on the lower deck and I must say it was very nice to be in the premium cabin.
We were offered Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Sparkling wine as pre-flight drinks and were offered the Independent, Mail, and Times to read also.
We were all boarded by 620 and doors closed for an ontime departure at 630.
The safety video was played as we pushed back.
Once completed we were informed of the flight time 8 hours 10 minutes slightly longer than advertised but believe this was due to the weather conditions and the stormy fronts over the area at the time.
CSM advised 250 POB 14 Cabin Crew and Two Pilots.
The Pilot announced that the co-plot would be flying the plane home today and I really can't remember her name but was a female pilot.
The take off was smooth along with the ascent into the cruise.
The CSM announced that the economy cabin was pretty empty and once in the cruise economy passengers would be able to move around if they so wish and any passengers wishing to sit in emergency exit seats and bulk head seats passengers would be required to pay £28 which the cabin crew would be around to take payment from those who wished to do so.
Once up into the cruise the initial drinks service began with pretzels as a snack.
About an hour and a half into the flight the meal service began and was completed and trays and dinnerware collected by 2 hours in.
The menu for the return from the East Coast was -
Starter -
Waldorf Salad with candied walnuts
Main Course -
Beef Povencale with savoy cabbage and a wholegrain mustard mash
Murgh makhani with basmati rice pilaf
Pumpkin agnolotti with butternut squash and sage sauce (v)
Bread -
Your choice of oven-baked bread rolls
Dessert -
Bakewell Tart
Rise and Shine (Breakfast)
Scambled eggs with bacon (full english)
Caramelised Onion and roctta frittata (v)
Service with tea or coffee
There was a baileys and brandy (Three Barrels) offering also after the meal.
The reason for the good rating for the food is that I am a nut allergy sufferer, as are a vast amount of people now days and was very surprised at Virgin's menu given the large amount of allergen sufferers out there now. I know that you can request a nut friendly meal but have requested one of these previously and the one of the outbound was not loaded (different trip) and the one of the return was extremely bland and was not nice at all. It would be nice to have a menu that did not contain mainly nuts but I know that now days it is more over cost and adding flavour in the cheapest way. I did however take my own sandwich on board but had the beef and this was ok a little tough if anything.
Once everything was collected from dinner the cabin crew dimmed the cabin and requested everyone lowered their window covers which everyone did.
After a couple of hours sleep I woke and was awake for the rest of the trip and the crew came through the cabin a number of times with a soft drinks service.
1 Hour 30 minutes from landing the cabin was awakened and re-lit for breakfast and this was served promptly and I had the full english which was very nice.
This was collected then 25 minutes to landing the seatbelt sign was turned on and we decsended into Gatwick for an on time arrival which was good as it had planned to be delayed slightly due to the change in route (Over New York and Boston).
We landed extremely smoothly, the smoothest I have ever had could not feel the touch down and the reverse thrust for braking was so smooth I wasn't thrown forward in my seat at all unlike normal.
We went straight to the gate and we disembarked really quickly.
We arrived to an empty immigartion control and was through really quickly.
The total time from landing to baggage reclaim hall including immigration was 10 minutes, I think this is a record for one of my trips normally it's about half hour.
This is where unfortunately the good part ended (as coming off all Virgin flights the goodness ends) we ended up waiting for baggage along with all other PE and Upper class passengers 30 minutes for our bags to come up as all the economy bags arrived first (25-30 minutes once baggage started arriving).
Once the bags had arrived and we exited through the customs lane it was all plane sailing home.
Overall I must say the cabin crew and the pilot's on this flight were the best I have ever had and I will be sending compliments to Crawley Towers informing them of this, if only it would be exactly the same crew for my flight in December for return from Vegas then I would be extremely pleased.
