My journey started at 0830 on Saturday August 31st with a drive down from Lake Tahoe which would normally take around four hours but due to the Oakland Bay Bridge being closed took more than five using the San Mateo Bridge instead, en route to SFO I received a text message from Virgin advising me of a delay of approximately one hour to my flight, this was not a problem as Mrs H had a 1510 VX flight to LAX and then onward to AKL. So we returned the rental car and made our way to VX checkin in Terminal 2 only to find an error in her e ticket (so much for my OCD v( ) by the time this had been sorted her flight had closed so VS arranged for her to fly to LAX with United y) (this took about an hour all in all).

With Mrs H now safely in the hands of United I made my way to the International terminal to checkin with VS, I was first in line and dealt with very quickly and friendly, checkin staff checked that I had been informed of the delay due to the late inbound aircraft, and given my invitation to the Clubhouse. Being first in I took the opportunity to have a shower.

After my shower I was greeted by a very friendly bartender “T” ): who kept many of us entertained and lubricated during our time in the CH.

Slightly before our re scheduled boarding time of 2000 an announcement was made that there would be a further delay due to a technical problem with G-VBIG, there were further updates with the promise we would be boarding soon. “T” stepped up to the plate and kept the entertainment and lubrication flowing, by this time there was quite a gathering at the bar all exchanging stories.

Around 2300 it was decided that G-VBIG couldn’t be repaired and that an Engine part would need to be replaced (this had to be flown in from London) resulting in the cancellation of todays VS20, there was no CH manager today and I feel his presence was needed, we were all told that the flight was cancelled and that VS were unable to help with accommodation and that we should find our own and claim back reasonable expenses, at this point a barrage of DYKWIA’s were directed towards the Cabin Crew who were sent to inform us of what was happening. I along with three others took the opportunity to catch a cab into Union Square and checkin to the Grand Hyatt for the night. I spent a few hours the next day watching the Americas Cup Yachts in the Bay before catching the Bart back to SFO.

As a result of yesterday's VS20 being cancelled due to technical issues there are two 744's from SFO to LHR today ours being re numbered VS1020.

Check in was a nightmare 50 minutes due to people not having some or all of their luggage and the fact that there were two flights today, for some reason original seats had not been kept and I was given 4A which I wasn't keen on, 19A which I had been in yesterday had gone but 19K was available so I swapped to that, (I think the seat needs re padding as the back rest felt a little worn out).

The Clubhouse was very busy but the staff we great, last nights bar tender (T) was off, I really think he is your kind of bartender Joey.
The CH manager "R" was present this evening and making sure he visited everyone and kept us all up to date (shame he wasn't there last night).

G-VBIG has been repaired and is now undergoing engine tests before being confirmed fit to fly.
Tonight's scheduled departure is 1945, however this turned into boarding at 2030 and pushback at 2100 with a flight time of 9.25 with a total of 347 onboard.

The FSM “D” did a great job in making sure everyone onboard was aware of the reasons for the delay and what they were entitled to in terms of compensation and judging by his remarks some people opted to sleep on the floor of the airport rather than get a room. CSS “B” and SCC “H” were fantastic taking care of us in UC, I opted for an early diner of the Cheese Plate then sleep, I got about six hours waking up around 1.45 before landing, I had two bacon rolls and a coffee for breakfast and felt pretty good. “H” advised me that she had placed my Duty Free pre order under my bed y) y) y)

We landed at LHR at 1415 I was third off the plane thanks to 19K, the immigration hall wasn’t too busy but IRIS was working today so I zipped straight through and by the time I had visited the washroom my bags were already on the Carousel.

With the exception of the delay and the re checkin fiasco it was another great flight, as previously stated the onboard crew were fantastic despite being brought in from San Francisco to SFO around 2200 to then be sent back into town getting to bed around 0400.
I guess I was one of the few who were not really inconvenienced by the delay as I had no plans or work that I missed out on and that Mrs H was in NZ so I was only going home to an empty house anyway.

I have put in my claim for the €600 due under EC 261/2004 and for $242 for my hotel room and also the claim for 25000 miles for the inconvenience caused.

Thanks for the TR and its such a shame people vent their frustration on CC who, in reality, are in a pretty similar predicament. Given the delay I am surprised VS didn't have a duty manager in the CH to keep people informed - and I am very surprised that VS washed their hands of people. I do understand that things are busy, but all the same.

Yes the LHR 747 UC seats need repadding, that metal bar under your shoulder blades isn't getting noticeable.

Good to hear Iris is still working!

My kind of bartender eh.... will make sure to seek this mysterious 'T' out if I ever pass through SFO.

Good to hear that the flight, ultimately, delivered y) y) A shame about the delay and an absent CH manager on the first day though n( n(

As I said before, top marks for heading back to town to find a hotel with a posse. I wonder if those DYKWIA type were the ones that slept on the airport floor :P

Cheers for this Dom, hopefully the compensation claim will be accepted and processed in short order. Welcome back to Blighty 8D

Ditto.
Bet being in the clubhouse for an extended "session" was fun though!:-P
Probably the delay and ultimate cancellation wasn't fun for the Y and PE PAX though

I have always managed to " go with the flow" and not get too stressed when there is a delay or cancelation . Fortunately I have never been under any pressure to make an appointment etc so the blood pressure was not affected unduly! 8D
Although it is natural to take out ones frustration on any available employee this is counterproductive, generally the best course of action is to be submissive and thereby getting a favourable outcome in a difficult situation.
Good luck with the claim, ignore all the previous advice and go for the jugular ! ):

Especially the SFO Clubhouse which is up there with the best. It's probably my favourite overseas one.......

.......along with the JFK one and the JNB one and the HKG one and the NRT one and the IAD one and the EWR one..... :o) :o)

But I do have a soft spot for the SFO one and the legend that was Claire who, sadly, no longer works there :(

I do like the SFO one too, my list so far is JFK, EWR, IAD, SFO, LHR, LGW and soon to visit HKG on Saturday night.

Am not sure why people are being so critical of the absence of the CH manager. Everyone is entitled to a day / night off and he may well have been rosterd not to work last Saturday.

As to Hotels it was Labour Day weekend so for VS to find rooms for 300+ people would have been hard - especially given how late in the day the decision to actually cancel was taken - so probably best to let individual pax make their own arrangements. Not ideal but it may well have been the most practical option.

I bet if VS had tried to find rooms there would still be criticism of how long it was taking !

And it would have been worse for the pax stuck in the main departures area. I hope they were given food/drink vouchers as part of the duty of care obligation.

There is only so much that staff can do in a situation like this.

I remember the criticism VS got over the emergency landing at Gander the other week and a lot of that was very unfair too.

Alas no, slinky, as far as I'm concerned. I have only flown into BOS but not out of it. Perhaps it's time for another trip there, but the difficulty there is that I can fly there for much, much less on another un-named airline :w so no CH :(

Would that be an airline with green planes HL ?
I'm hopefully going to try The SFO clubhouse soon but psssst don't mrs B !
So what is everyone's favourite then ? I've only done LHR ,JFK , EWR and BOS ,
LHR obviously wins in that race for me but are there any others that v- flyers think are better ?

Yeah Joey he is definitely a great bartender, the trip back into town wasn't as exciting as it sounds after all of "T's" hard work it was straight to bed for me unfortunately ][|)

I too am hoping that the compensation will be heading my way shortly as I will be spending a whole lot more cash in NZ next week ):

As for the flight and crew they were great I have passed on my thanks in an email to Crawley Towers naming the ones who dealt with me and the whole crew in general so I hope it gets back to them y)

Things aren't looking too good on the upgrade front, I checked before going to bed at 0800 and there were no G's for my flight and Flightstats said there were Jx2 and Cx2. When I got up at 1145 Jx0 Cx0 n(

Oh well it looks like I'm flying PE to HKG unless anyone cancels.
