My quest to accrue Tier Points for a further Au Renewal has this year prompted me to consider runs on Little Red flights ): Going up to MAN and back in a day was not only a feasible option, but was also relatively inexpensive.

I will concentrate on the return leg because Little Red are moving to T2 in the not too distant future and something tells me I will be doing this again :w (I will "contrast and compare" with the outbound flight where appropriate ;)

Having spent a few hours at Manchester Airport, I have reached some conclusions:
Next time I will go into the City Centre if only for an hour
If I was to stay, then the Raddison it will be (that from a committed Hilton boy)
The layout of the three Terminals makes for a lot of walking!!

Anyway, got to Check in just after it had opened and it was already very busy. Joined the Priority Line and shortly afterwards was called forward to the ticketing desk. An excellent experience as not only did the Check in Agent fully engage with me as a customer (somewhat of a rarity in London) but also she said, "I do not recognise as being through her before Mr Buns" and then proceeded to give me full directions to the Escape Lounge y) y)

As with most airports these days there was a tiny bit of construction going on so making the it a trek to the main Departure Lounge. The Escape Lounge in Terminal 3 at MAN is very light and airy, excellent views across the airfield and following a warm welcome I settled in. There is a service bar for wines and spirits and a charge for premium brand drinks, such as Jack Daniels. On a passing note, currently there is no Lounge available for passengers travelling out of LHR as "the contract has not been renewed" - which given that Little Red are shortly moving to T2 at LHR and the Servisair Lounge in T1 is so dire is hardly surprising.

The staff in the Lounge really did seem to care and to me that is always important as Airport Lounges can often be such soulless places.

At 2Pm, i decided to get to the Gate and this involved walking back past security and down to the Domestic Departure area and a little tip here - leave going there until you need to as once there you cannot go back to the man Departure Lounge.

There was only a short wait before boarding commenced. The routine is firstly passengers who need assistance quickly followed by Au Holders and Delta equivalents. Now not only was I able to get SEQ1 for this flight but was also first to board |:)

At Check In I was offered an exit Row seat which I had gratefully accepted and it does seem there is a conscious effort to give extra space to Gold Card holders y) y)

Boarding was very swift as the flight was about 50% full but alas, pushback was held by ATC, so no quick getaway then :( A short taxi and we were up and away. As it is only a 30 - 40 minute flight, service commenced pretty sharpish and being in the centre of the aircraft, it does mean you are last to be served.

Crew were very friendly, but I regret to say, they had run out of scotch by the time they had got to me - not surprising as they seem to give out two miniatures at a time :w

Clouds obscured the view for most of the journey but eventually we were down to see the views over Windsor and Eton as we approached Runway 9L. The run to the Gate was therefore swift and after waiting for the air bridge to be connected we were all off.

So in conclusion, this is a viable way of getting Tier Points and a pleasant enough experience - maybe next time I will stay overnight in Manchester City Centre

Thanks for reading

Thanks Buns for a good LR TR.

Really pleased you received the traditional warm welcome at check in at MAN that you enjoyed the escape lounge - as you know I have completed a "few" LR flights and still it amazes me.....the stark difference in service levels between the teams at MAN and LHR.

I have suggested the LHR team are shown how its done by their colleagues in MAN...... ):

The Escape lounge is also a welcome oasis and I always find the team in there are super nice and friendly....I just wish they would bring a bit of variety to the sandwiches on offer.

The Servisair lounge at LHR is no loss IMO - it was dire and though far from ideal, the £10 Costa card is welcome until the move to T2 in September and overall a much enhanced experience.

Shame to hear the load was around 50% that's a lot lower than my recent fights and sorry to hear about the bar issues....the two miniatures directive does seem to take its toll and just one of the reasons why I now sit towards the back and because it allows more time to chat to the crew..... :w

Thanks again

Thanks for your comments and confirming what I thought - namely there is a stark difference in the service levels between Manchester and London y)

I will take your tip of sitting at the back the next time I do the run ;)

Even I was surprised how qick I could get to the Gate given my advancing years ):

Hi Buns
Well done on yet another detailed trip report!

Are you not due to take a trip with some little 'uns longhaul sometime in the future or did I miss that TR? Was looking forward to see how relaxed you came out at the other end ;-)

Many thanks y)

You are quite correct, my first VS flight with little ones in tow is upcoming and all being well, this time next week we will be in the air and on our way to the Land of the Mouse.

Rest assured a full TR will follow and my only hope is that my stern warnings about not disturbing others on board are heeded ):

Haha! I look forward to your trip report where you ended up eating Mac and Cheese because a fussy child stole your beef!

Should be a fairly quiet flight, plenty of room for them to run about without disturbing.

They better not lark about or else they will be treated to a day at the American Girl Shop and being two boys I suspect that this will be enough to keep them in their seats throughout the journey :o)

Only just read this.. Definitely head into Manchester city centre for a night. The rail sevice into the centre is fine,

The Deansgate Hilton is pretty good with excellent views over the city, but last time we went they'd decided to expand Cloud 23 into the Exec Lounge making the latter not the usual experience. We're up there again next weekend so will see if they've made this permanent.

Having read this, although the plus lounge looks rather good and it's something I'd probably pay to get into, if I were a normal lounge user I wouldn't be happy to pay in and receive portentially a "lower" product (although it's the same product they've always received just don't have anything better visible).

I'm assuming PP card holders will only get into the standard lounge. Overall it cheapens the lounge experience, but I can see why they're doing it, to attract more ordinary punters to usual lounge and get traditional lounge customers to pay a premium.
