This is a delayed TR from our first flight in UC about a month ago! We were travelling as a couple in UC, but also with my sister and her partner who were in Y. Beware, it will be long as it was a first time experience for all of us, and I'm not known for brevity at the best of times... :)

As our flight time was 11:30 and we live a long drive from LHR, we decided to book a night at the Hilton T5 the night before as they had a great deal on parking. We arrived at about 20:00 and there was an issue with the booking--for some reason they'd cancelled our room with the parking included, but left my sister's room on the reservation! After a bit of confusion they found the original booking and apologised, and we got to check in and drop off our bags, then have a quick meal in the hotel restaurant before getting to bed. The room was nice and we'd stay again, despite it being a bit of a trek to T3. I got everyone up early the following morning as I wanted us to get the most out of the Clubhouse experience; no one else was quite as enthusiastic as I was about the 5am wake up call (until we got there, of course...) We got a taxi, as by the time the four of us would have paid for a shuttle it was only a few pounds more to go for a taxi and seemed more convenient.

We arrived at T3 and checked in very swiftly, the lady at the desk was courteous and helpful, told us that the Clubhouse would open at 7am and directed us to the fast track security lift. Security was very quiet; we were through in minutes and noticed that the regular security line was pretty sparse, too, so waited a couple of minutes more for our travelling companions to join us. We then decided as it was about 06:35 that it was worth heading up to the CH to wait for them to open. When we arrived we were greeted by a lovely lady who informed us the CH was now open from 06:30 onwards, not 07:00 as we (and a lot of the ground crew!) seemed to think. She gave us a quick tour as it was our first time in there, and there were no issues with bringing in our guests. When we arrived it was actually really quite empty, only one or two tables were occupied, so we choose our seats, opting for a table in the bar area, and then went straight off to book treatments. At this point everyone else I was travelling with got pretty excited--my sister booked a free hair styling appointment, both my OH and her OH opted for haircuts, and I went for a wash and blow dry. Having booked those we went back to order our breakfast. My sister wanted to try a cocktail but I think expectation outstripped reality once she realised even she couldn't stomach alcohol at 7am! Still, it was of course instagrammed for posterity ;) We went for a range of breakfast dishes, I opted for Egg Florentine which was good, but I wish they did two eggs instead of one so you don't have to feel greedy ordering a second :| Our waiter was great and very attentive. After food and drinks we had our appointments--my husband's haircut ended up being free and they did a great job, so he was very happy. We all grabbed a few bits and pieces from the deli before noticing that our gate had been announced. We decided that rather than wait until called we'd wander down together to the gate.

Boarding happened shortly after and we were the first on board. I think as I've read a lot about travelling in Upper thanks to all the helpful posts here I knew what to expect and was perhaps less excited, but my OH surprised me with how enthusiastic he was about it and that made me really happy in turn. The aircraft was an A340-300 and we opted for seats 3K and 4K. The seats were a little tired around the edges but overall very comfortable and all in good working order. The gentleman in the seat in front of us had to move seats, as try as they might, the CC couldn't convert his seat to a bed. We decided for the main meal that my husband would join me sitting on the ottoman so we could eat across from each other; another first :) It was really nice, especially as I think our main (and really only) criticism of the UC layout is that if you're travelling as a couple, it's a little isolating. Upper was about half full, and I think there was a passenger load of around 97 in total.

For entertainment, the crew brought everyone in Upper iPads that had more films loaded on to them. My OH was pretty happy with this as the resolution was much better than that of the screens. I read rather than watched anything, so the 4 star rating came from my husband who caught up on a few films and was happy with the iPad.

The food was definitely the best food we've had on an aircraft. Our orders were taken promptly by very lovely staff. I opted for a soup of some kind and my husband wanted a Japanese yakitori selection which they had some sort of stock issue with, many people ordered it, but only one guy in the cabin got it in the end due to special dietary requirements. OH got something else that he said was decent, and had the steak as a main which he was pleasantly surprised with! I had a miso cod dish that was really very nice. Dessert was a bit more ordinary and not too memorable, but as we'd already been fed well in the CH it was more about trying things than anything!

As I'd not slept much the night before I then tried to sleep but failed. The beds were made up for us and were really cosy, but sleep eluded me (until about half an hour before breakfast was due to be served!) My OH got a couple of hours of sleep in between watching films. I visited my sister and her partner in Y at one point. They were pretty cramped and had a very awkward lady in front of them who'd had too much to drink and was causing a stir. Her laptop ran out of batteries and she managed to convince a member of CC to let her sit in UC for an hour to charge it, but when she was asked to return to Y she kicked up a bit of a fuss, and then kept trying to find other ways to be allowed back in to Upper. She was very loud and apparently pressed the call button for CC so many times that my sister lost count!

We noticed a few people sit at the bar throughout the flight and chat, but everyone was friendly and low key so there were no disturbances. I went down to the bar once to grab a snack but at that time no one was there.

We landed on time and immigration was really straight forward, our bags were some of the first off the conveyor belt and we were off to enjoy our Tokyo adventure! We were collected by the Limousine Bus which after a journey of just over an hour dropped us off at our lovely hotel.

Thank you for a most enjoyable TR. Glad the whole experience didn't disappoint in any way. I think you were very brave visiting your sister in Y. I think I would have stayed hidden in UC !
Hope you had a good time in Japan.

Glad you seemed to enjoy the whole experience,
I remember being very reserved on my first CH visit regarding good but that feeling will slowly diminish the more times you visit .
Thanks for posting

Thanks for the TR; I'm rather surprised that the CC allowed someone to sit in UC to charge a laptop, and then the individual had the audacity to kick off when asked to return to Y! :(!

Did she enjoy some UC hospitality whilst waiting for the battery to charge?

A few drinks at the bar or afternoon tea can help pass the time.

Happy to read you had such a great experience. In the CH I particularly like the deli for sourdough and ham, and on the flight itself eating together is one of our high points.

Your 'any excuse' passenger sounds like a real pain for the crew!

Super TR Spacedog, thanks, and your enjoyment of the experience comes through with your surprise at your OH's enthusiasm (maybe he'll eventually 'get' the fuss you make about collecting those miles now). I'm glad to read it was a great experience, nightmare pax aside. Thanks for posting.

Great TR, the seating in upper isn't great for couples but we always eat together on our flights. I always end up on the ottoman tho!!!

Really enjoyed reading your trip report and so excited for your first UC and Clubhouse experience. It really does spoil you, doesn't it? No matter how many times I fly, I am always giddy with excitement at flying UC and the Clubhouse experience. :)

Great TR - thanks for posting it. I still remember my first Upper Class flight back in 2006 - it was from Manchester, so no Clubhouse, but a good flight all the same.

Turning left at the boarding door is an expensive habit...

Thanks, for reading, all! :)

I think because it was the first time we'd been we managed to spend the time wisely--everyone was very impressed with what was on offer. I think we had just over three and a half hours and it was plenty of time for all four of us to get treatments etc. We did notice it got really busy after 7:30, so we were happy to get in and get a good pick of the seating! :)

Yes, we did see Mt. Fuji! The trip was amazing; we stayed in Tokyo and really enjoyed it, it's a fascinating place to visit. You'll love it I am sure! Highlights were the Meiji Shrine on Sunday; lots of weddings and coming of age ceremonies for kids, so a lot of beautiful traditional outfits were worn, and we love Akihabara for all the crazy sights and shopping.

Haha, I did want to! I felt a bit guilty but I think they dealt with it all OK. However, the cramped experience means they have both decided to start saving miles to upgrade their next trip--they got a big boost from this trip in Y as I signed them up for the double miles promotion running back then, plus as I referred them they got a few extra miles.

OK, next time I'll order three plates all at once ;D Haha. Maybe not, but I do think you're right, I think we were all on our best behaviour!

I don't know if she got any UC perks other than the seat and the charger; she was right in the back section of UC so I only saw her once when walking through to see my sister. They were pretty unimpressed that she got special treatment, but I suppose it was a case of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." I'm glad that after she tried to get back in she was told no, but my sister said she continued to be a pain throughout the remainder of the flight and when she was finally refused alcohol, she then kept demanding coffee while the cabin crew were getting everything ready for landing!

The deli was great when we got a bit peckish later but didn't want to order a full meal--although the deli portions were extremely generous! We also liked dining together in-flight and will do it again :) Apart from anything it makes the UC experience a bit more intimate.

Yes, I felt bad for CC dealing with her. I guess some people will try anything...

Thanks for all your advice beforehand, Bretty, it was invaluable :) A big part of this for me was getting the seats and I really wanted me OH to be happy--as I mentioned, i think I was less surprised as I'd done so much reading prior to flying in UC, but a lot of things were a surprise to my OH and seeing him so happy made it all worthwhile. He's now fully converted and dedicated to helping collect the miles and will sign up for the black AMEX the next time the bonus is on!

Haha, I felt a bit bad that he ended up on the ottoman as he said it was fine but not too comfy! I will bear that burden next time; it's only fair :)

Thank you! Yes, I can't imagine the excitement diminishing, particularly as I work quite hard to get the miles and find the reward seats, so there's a real sense of accomplishment and "I made this happen!" when we do get to upgrade.

Kraken wrote:Turning left at the boarding door is an expensive habit...

It is indeed. I shall endeavour to stay ahead of the game with the miles to help reduce the costs... shouldn't be too hard with all the great advice available here :)
