VS005 LHR-MIA 27th December 2006
A340-600 G-VBLU (Soul Sister)
Premium Economy (well for about 10 mins anyway [8D] see below)

My trip from home started on the 26th with the BD591 MAN>LHR flight. Already changed this flight to the day before as I had a tight connection at LHR with my original booking. Nothing much to say about the BD flight a standard domestic BMI flight. Id booked a room at the Sheraton Skyline only a few days before but it was very reasonably priced at 65 inc. tax.

Woke up quite early, checked out and caught the first hotel hoppa bus to T3 (05:20). I didnt want to take any chances getting caught in any check-in or security lines. I was as VS check-in by 05:30 so had to wait half an hour or so before it opened, during this time I collected my money order from Travelex.

Upper Class check-in was fantastic. I had a very nice chatty member of staff check me in. In fewer than 5 mins I was making my way to fast track (yes a fast track sticker was put on my Premium Economy boarding card without asking)

Fast track was an absolute breeze at 06:15 with no line or in fact anyone in front of me at all. The only problem I had was actually finding the entrance as the normal security line now winds its way in front of fast track.

As the Clubhouse doesnt open until 07:00 I window shopped in T3 for a while. Before long I was making my way up those stairs to the Clubhouse. Having only just opened it was very quite. The service was as fantastic as ever. My coffee and breakfast order arrived within minutes.

Just chilled and relaxed until my hair cut appointment at 09:15. I was keeping my eye on Expert Flyer as my flight had been pretty full for several months now. No calls for my name made in the Clubhouse so it didnt look much chance of an op-up. By the time I left the Clubhouse was getting busy.

Before long the VS005 flight was called so I made my way to gate 40 where G-VBLU was waiting. Getting past the boarding pass collection area was easy but the line after that to the A/C was very long and as per usual with LHR no visible signs of priority boarding in operation.

Finally got on board and made my way to seat 20A. Even though we had G-VBLU down on here as having the new PE seats, she doesnt yet. Oh well still better than economy. I was just getting comfortable when a girl asked me if I would swap with her OH as she was in 20D and her OH was in 18A. No problem at all as I wasnt going to turn down the chance to sit in a bulk head row. Again just as I was getting comfortable and making my way though my glass of champagne when another pax got on and she also had a boarding card with 20A on it. It took a while for the crew to work out that I was now in fact in 18A and the girl sat in 20A wasnt in fact me, anyway the crew asked for my boarding card and it was taken away and then came those famous immortal words every V-Flyer loves to hear Mr Mitchell, weve had to upgrade you on todays flight [oo][y][8D]

Collected my things and made my way to seat 2K which would be my home for the next 9.5 hours. All 3 cabins where virtually full.

The IFBT came round and took my order. Oh how nice to be sat at the front of the bus again. We pushed back at around 11:40 and rotated at approx. 12:10. Not long to wait for the seat belt sign to be turned off and V:Port to be started, although after about 30 mins there was a system-wide crash and the entire IFE system had to be re-booted which took well over an hour to complete. My UCS seat is in good condition with everything working as it should (apart from V:Port of course).

I had the crab cakes for starters followed by the fish bake with apple and blackberry for desert, all of which were very good indeed. Just as I was finished desert V:Port sprung back to like to I started watching Snakes on a Plane again. Warning if you are a nervous flyer its probably not a good idea to watch this film whilst you are flying. During this time ice cream was served, although I lost my plastic spoon as I was opening the tub (which I never did find!) At this point the J cabin was in darkness with most pax sleeping or at least dozing.

I was then called for my scalp and shoulder massage which I have to say was excellent. Made a few trips to the bar during the flight which was not too busy whilst I was there. Also slept for an hour or so.

Afternoon tea was served about 2 hours before landing so I made my way back to my seat. Choice of sandwiches or a scone and jam followed by coffee or tea.

Before long we started our decent into MIA and it was time to prepare for landing. I have to say that Upper Class flights go much quicker than economy flights. Dont you just love J pax who think that the seat belt sign doesnt apply to them? There was one pax who paid no attention to it at all, sorting out their bags and then making a trip to the washroom.

Landed at 16:45 local time and we where soon on our way to immigration. For the second time I was sent to secondary immigration where I had to wait over an hour to get seen this time. It turns out my name (or at least someone with the same name as me) is on a list. By the time I left immigration the VS baggage area was deserted with just my bag left to collect so no idea if baggage priority worked (doubt it did as yet again for the seventh flight in a row no J tag was attached to my bag). How difficult is this to do Virgin? Although I really have now given up on expecting baggage priority when flying VS as a Au card holder. Its clearly beyond their capabilities.

Made my way to the pre-arranged transfer and I was soon at the National hotel, Miami Beach. Weather is great BTW [8D]. Hotel also offers free (yes free) high speed internet access either wired or wireless in all the rooms.

The on-board service was fantstic and I was addressed as Mr Mitchell the entire flight [y]

Great Christmas present, and sounds like a very good flight and crew ... in fact lots of reports lately have read more positive than for a while, so maybe this does mark a general upturn in service (at least on board).

Very jealous about the Miami weather though!

Congrats on the upgrade. [^] There's something sweet about collecting your things and moving to the front of the bus in front of the envious stares (and glares) of the other passengers. [:D]

Good TR. Enjoy the rest of your trip

One thing I did forget to mention.

No actual amenity packs where handed out on this flight, only socks, a toothbrush, eye shades and ear plugs all seperate and already on the seats. There was also a basket left on the bar with metal VS pens, moisturiser, sewing kit or packs of tissues.

The National is a great boutique hotel (which is quite unusual for a V Hols package I have to say) and it's in a good location right on the beach. The Infinity pool is just stunning (I'll upload a pic later)

Also just had a rather nice box of chocs delivered to my room with a nice note from the relationship manager, thanking me for my stay [:)]

Why? - I can understand that nervous flyers would not want to to watch any film which depicts an aircraft in trouble - but for the vast majority of people its not a problem - I remember seeing Flight of the Phoenix (rubbish film IMHO)and in the magazine there was a note that nervous flyers might not enjoy some scenes. As long as they do this then I do not see a problem.

Oh, such a shame your seat was double-booked... not! [:D]

Great TR, nice to read one that goes well![y]

As far as Snakes on a Plane, I remember when airlines refused to show any film mentioning air mishaps or (gasp) such slithery items as this one shows. I've somehow missed seeing it, although I read the book. I wonder how obnoxious the complainer is, and how good the comeuppance was? Maybe I should stay awake and find out!

Snakes, why's everyone so down on snakes? I had one as a pet once. Snakes don't bark, drool, claw the antiques, or otherwise rattle the landlord (well, maybe that's because I didn't tell him). Worked very well for getting the house all to myself on *certain* occasions. Just one mention that my pet snake (a harmless garter snake) was out of his aquarium, and all my college roommates would find other places to go, restaurants to eat out in, etc. and they would stay gone until after Monday's lectures. I have to mention I always knew where George (the snake) was, but I never told.[}:)] Amazingly, he only was able to escape on Fridays or Saturdays.[:I]

He eventually moved on to a new house after I received my degree, where he similarly terrorized the snake-hating residents on weekends only...

Thanks for the TR James and well done on the U/G. As HL mentioned there is something sweet about getting that call, really satisfying!

I would not have any problem with the snakes movie but can understand where Tinkerbelle is coming from. Now one movie that would upset a lot of people is the one I have just watched on DVD, 'United 93' with that you could excuse people being scared.

I read somewhere that that's one film that will never be shown on an A/C IFE system.

Did you manage to get it cleared up so you don't have to do CBP Secondary every time you enter - i.e. they manage to reference your passport number/other id as 'Not the mitchja we're looking for'?

Or will you end up having to do Secondary every time someone while the name is on the watch list?

Thanks for the report, and result on the op-up.

The VS elastic bag tags are a bit poor I think - the Star Alliance tags used by BD, UA, LH, and most others, are stuck in to the barcoded bag tag (stuck in between the adhesive layers) when it's being closed up, and they seldom come off in my experience.

However, as far as I know, bag loading isn't influenced by the Premium/Upper tags themselves, but whether 'priority' is set on the bag's tracking number (the 'barcode'). This allows the automatic baggage sorting machinery to punt your bag to the right place.

I was told that on VS, the priority flag needs to be manually set by the agent, even if you're travelling on a paid J cabin ticket. I can't be sure that this is true, but it's what a VS staffer told me. This seems to differ from the Star Alliance system, where as soon as your FF card is swiped, the status registers, and even the barcoded label prints with a 'PRIORITY' legend (along with any 'RUSH/HOT' indications).

If only VS could be so organised, so if the pax is seated in J/W, or a FC Au card is on the booking, the priority is automagically set. Having 'PRIORITY' appear on the printed barcode tag would be even better.

So, any priority sticker is really there to provide a visual cue to the handling staff in the event of any mishandling, or if the bags are manually sorted during the journey.

We can only hope... [;)]

Cheers,
Mike

I'm not sure if a note has been entered into my immigratin records or not. The officer did make the point of saying that I'd had secondary checks before. Yes I agreed, but its not my fault so what else does he want me to say.

They were so flippant though which did wind me up and they certainly didn't rush. I knew I would be OK as I dont have anything to hide but they do without a doubt make you feel like a criminal. I've have made a complaint about the way I was treated with the US Customs Boarder protection agency.

Anyone know if there's a way to check if a note has been added to my records or to get a note added. Sure I read somewhere there's some department you can write to in such situations.

Anyway simple, if this continues to happen, I stop travelling to the US and spend my money in another country.

BTW I've just uploaded a few pics of the National hotel pool [:)]

Shame about the secondary screening, again, though.

Just an update on the immigration problems I've been having recently.

I've just written a letter of complaint to W. Ralph Basham who runs the US Customs and Border Protection department in Washington DC. If you have a look at their web site there is a pledge to travelers. Basically at MIA they screwed up on every single point on their pledge. They also screwed up most of it at IAD as well, not to mention they didn't even perform the entry procedures correctly anyway (ie they didn't finger print me or photograph me). I've also sent him a copy of the photo page of my passport and asked him to sort this mess out.

I await a reply and I'll keep you posted. I will not be travelling to the US again until this is sorted out.
