I'e never actually submitted a TR before, but thought it was about time I got around to it!

Drove up to Heathrow on a lovely sunny morning - trip took around 2 hours and Purple Parking were there to meet us on arrival at T3. We have used PP a number of times and have found their service to be excellent on each occasion - I highly recommend them, particularly the Meet and Greet service which does save you quite a bit of time. We had already checked in on line so dropped off the bags and went through Security to have a coffee and look around Duty Free. Stocked up on sandwiches too - have learned that this is a bit of a contingency plan if a) you are delayed in taking off, or b) don't like the main courses on offer!

Boarded Lady Penelope around 11.30 am, and were served sparking wine - is it me or is the quality of this going downhill??? It was certainly not a good quality wine. v(

There were a few spare seats in PE including the row behind us (we had 36 A and C) so thought I might be able to recline without feeling guilty! No such luck - a few minutes later a family with 3 young boys boarded and took 37 A,C,D and F. Now I am not that keen on children anyway, but especially not for 8 hours non-stop on a plane. As soon as they sat down, I knew they would be trouble! The father and middle boy (about 10) sat behind my OH and me and immediately proceeded to have a loud guessing game about footballers and their achievements with the rest of the family aross the aisle. Football is on the same level as children in my dislike stakes! So I was beginning to get a bit stressed - then the captain announced that there would be a 45 minute airfield delay ii) After about 40 minutes he came one the PA again to say that a passenger had been taken ill and would have to be taken off the plane! This took some considerable time, and coupled with the need to take the respective luggage off the aircraft before we could proceed, there was a good 1 1/2 hours delay before we finally took off. The sandwiches had come in useful after all :)

The flight itself was pretty uneventful, Lunch was not great - the beef was quite glutinous and tough. There were no OJ and water runs the entire flight which I thought unusual. Ice cream was offered later on as were sandwiches and scones. I was surprised there was no alternative to the cheese and onion sandwich option which I personally don't like, but the scone was very pleasant.

Famiy with 3 boys behind continued to be a bit vocal - mother summoned the CC and said they had forgotten to order a vegetarian meal and could she put 5 aside for them. Then father asked for camomile tea! CC said they don't serve this and he was not happy. She offered him hot water with lemon instead, but he didn't appear to want this. Then the boy behind we was sick after eating too many sweets - you get the picture!

One complaint I had was that, as usual, we were asked to lower the blinds soon after take off, but my reading light would not work, so I could not read my book during the flight. I did ask the CC to have a look at it, but she never came back to try to fix it. Bit annoying!

We eventually arrived at JFK around 4.45 pm local and again had to wait around 15 minutes to proceed to our stand.

On our way to the immigration hall, the hubbub of noise from the end of the corridor did not bode well, and it turned out to be the worst queue I have ever seen for immigration - it stretched out of the hall half way up the corridor and once in the hall itself, there were around 10 lines of people within the tape barriers! It was not a good day for delays - and 2 hours later we finally passed through immigration into the baggage reclaim area!!

So, to sum up, the flight itself was good - shame about the delays and other niggles.

Oh my lord! Just the kind of flight you do not want to have! Any one of those incidents could have been borne on their own (well except for the vocal family) but to have them all together!! :0

The family sounded awful but I'm amazed at their sublime cheek in expecting there to be 5 spare vegetarian meals. What did they think the crew could do? Pop down to Tesco's?

My blood would have boiled, especially with the sickness - the blinds thing irritates the hell out of me too, I don't know why VS CC take it on themselves to continually lean over you and pull up or push down a blind, even in UC. As for immigration, seems to be getting worse at JFK?

Thanks for the TR Turquoise. Sounds like a challenging flight with more delays and grating fellow pax than you should have to deal with! None of it VS's fault but irritating nevertheless.

JFK immigration sounds a nightmare - I always take a book to read in the queue - it make the waiting much more manageable. On my last couple of New York trips I have used EWR and because they have fewer international flights the queues have been much shorter there.

Cheers

Completely agree - last month it was 30 minutes from leaving the plane to getting on the airtrain to the JetBlue terminal.

Thanks for the TR!

Really? It sounds absolutely awful!

You are right about the sparkling wine. It really isn't worth drinking.

I know, it is just ridiculous that on day flights they plunge the entire cabin into darkness. If you want to sleep, use the mask.

I just raise the blinds once the CC have exited the cabin...

This has to be a joke?

You get awful, badly behaved people people in many situations, from Michelin stared restaurants and first class hotels to pizza hut and the travelodge.

To dismiss people based upon what class of travel they 'should be in' is a totally outdated attitude.

Just goes to show that when dealing solely with the written (eg email) word people have to make totally sure that the tone they wish to convey is clear.

I've obviously been reading the BA bit of Flyertalk too much.

Thanks for the TR.

I think I might have broken down and wept when faced with the family behind (assuming you can face somebody behind, that is). Loud football chat with demands for vegetarian meals and (as Paul Calf's mum put it) that calamine tea ? Something seriously amiss there :w

The sick passenger delay can be very frustrating - did they make you account for all your cabin luggage as part of the process?

Ouch! :0 Now I feel very, very lucky. On Sunday's VS45 we walked to immigration and straight through, no queue at all...

I was a row or two ahead of you on that flight and completely agree. We were in the queue for 2 hours at JFK passing the same people as we weaved back and fore. Got to our hotel pretty late and tired.
