Did OLCI the evening before the flight & again could not print out boarding passes (not even given the option). Did the DTD baggage-drop the following morning in next to no time, then headed onto Universal Orlando for what has become our customary routine for the last day in Florida. Islands of Adventure with a good lunch at Mythos.

Headed out to MCO mid afternoon (probably earlier than we needed to, but IoA was packed). Dropped the hire car & up to the UC check-in area to drop extra hold baggage. There is priority security access (of sorts) for UC pax – you get a short-cut right up to a boarding card + ID checker, after that you have to wait in line. We must have arrived just after the mid afternoon rush for security as all the lines were pretty much walk-up to the boarding card + ID checker.

If you have read any of my previous trip reports, you will be aware that I don’t hold the TSA in particularly high esteem. I have to say, there was nothing to complain about today at MCO. We were through security in under 10mins (both got directed through the body-scanner, no metal detector) the TSA staff were polite and halfway friendly. Train over to the airside terminal and up to the Delta Sky Club. Don’t need to say a lot about the Sky Club, other than the air conditioning was not working very well, downstairs in the main airside terminal was a lot cooler.

Wandered down to the gate ahead of the boarding call and was boarded after a short wait. Duty free collected & turned left at the door. Bags stowed, champagne & sleep suit offered + accepted. The suites are in reasonable condition – no obvious faults. The movable armrest in 9K gives way as soon as any weight is put on it – but it will lock in the down position, which will matter later in the flight.

Flight time to LGW is going to be 7h53m with 434 pax & 15 crew onboard. We are still waiting for a few stragglers to board then we should be off. Aah, looks like I am going to get the Virgin experience of travelling with a Z-lister… one of the stragglers has just boarded and taken up residence in 8K next to me. There has already been a little fawning – Z-lister did not have to put any of his bags into the overhead / wardrobe himself – the crew did it for him. He was also offered a drink when the pre-departure drinks had been cleared away for other UC pax. This flight could be interesting.

Before departure the crew were making up the bowls of crisps [at the UC bar] to be offered with the after departure drinks – neither crew member was wearing the blue gloves & one of them was eating some of the crisps too… hmm.

Post take-off, the drinks have yet to be delivered, but Z-lister has already got a crew member from another cabin kneeled by his ottoman chatting to him. This chat lasted a good 10mins while the drinks were served to the UC cabin.

Z-lister has just been given a bottle of Lanson champagne (wrapped up in paper) as a present from the crew (I heard them tell him what it is). I can already feel the letter to Crawley Towers coming on.

Had the Duck followed by the Chicken for dinner – both were good. Nothing to write home about, but nothing wrong with either. Have just been to the toilet & I clocked the pax list taped up near the galley on the way back. Seems that Z-lister is a UNIQ, so I guess a certain amount of the attention he is getting is justified. Question to the other UNIQ’s on here (I know there are some) – when were you last given an unopened bottle of Lanson as a gift by the crew?

Got a few hours sleep on the bed & woke up about 1h40m out of LGW. The crew were just starting breakfast service so I had breakfast. The bacon roll was much better than previous VS attempts – it was actual back bacon (as opposed to the hot ham that you used to get) – very tasty it was too.

Now if you are a UNIQ passenger, you have travelled on VS quite a bit. You would expect UNIQ’s to have mastered the working of the UC Suite. Hmm, not so this morning. Z-lister had his IFE screen in the “view while you eat” position with the seat table out & a mug of coffee on the table, in front of the IFE screen. He pushed the table right back, the IFE screen caught the mug of coffee and deposited the contents all over his lap. I saw all this happen as I was getting something out of the overhead bin… time to dive back into my suite and laugh :D . Cue some fawning from the crew, offering anything they could find to try and let Z-lister regain some of his composure.

Once Z-lister had dried his trousers as best he could, he decided he wanted breakfast. A few minutes earlier another UC passenger had just woken up and had been told “there is just time for a bacon roll” & that is all he was given. There was, however, time for Z-lister to be presented with a full English breakfast. v(

Shortly after the remains of the breakfast service had been cleared away we got the “10mins to use the washrooms” announcement. The Z-lister asked the crew for his bags and they were placed on the floor in front of his suite so he could access them all with minimum effort. Bear in mind he was in 8K – there was not much space for others further forward to get round his bags, but nothing was too much trouble for him as far as the crew were concerned.

Cabin was secured for landing and we were at the gate 20mins early. Straight through immigration and the bags were on the carousel as we got to the baggage hall. 3 hours later we were home in the Midlands, so no complaints.

This was an OK flight. The crew in Upper did not use any passengers names & to be honest, they were only really interested in one passenger, our friend in 8K. Seems that the VS consistency bug has struck again (having the Z-lister on board did not help). The outbound flight was pretty much perfect & would bring me back to Virgin time and time again. The inbound flight probably would not.

I've checked with a Moderator who says it is OK for me to name the Z-lister outright... but let's go for a hint.

"In it to win it" - likes watching lots of balls spin around in a machine.

Mmmmm ?|

Is this z lister usually a bright shade of orange when hosting the lottery?

If so, I've been in the old LGW CH and in the UC cabin when he's been catered for by staff. There was certainly lots of frivolity and laughter in the spa when he was there, when it was my turn for a shave they told me the CH was like a second home to him.

Wonder if it is the same chap?

rcslt has identified our Z-lister.
The shade of orange may be down to the Florida sunshine in part too - let's face it, even when he hosts the lottery he can easily fly out to Florida on a Sunday or Monday and be back in time for the next weekend show. I somehow doubt that full J fare would be an issue for him.

Great TR and loved the idea of Z lister getting soaked. I know VS highlight certain passengers on the system even if they do not fly regularly as my husband found out by accident that he been identified purely due to the his work with RB.

A bright shade of orange, LOL.

VS has several categories of UNIQs I believe, so Mr Well-tanned may not have been a frequent flier ... all the same, I'm sure he doesn't need a freebie Lanson ...

Be interested in the response from Crawley Towers.

hahaha.

I've also been on a flight with this z-lister, outbound to MCO. Although we didn't actually see him until we were on the monorail as we were in PE in the bubble at the time.
TBH I had no idea who he was, I was traveling with my cousin and he knew him and we managed to be in the monorail with him and his two companions, who took great umbrage when I said, 'Sorry mate, I have no idea who you are' when he asked had we recognised him from the tv. and it was the truth, I didn't!

Have had the fortune of meeting one Z lister on 2 flights now, both to HKG. Must say this ones behaviour and attitude was fantastic and no issues at all. Sat opposite last time and a complete pleasure to fly with.... Staff do give them some additional time for sure but in their defence I suppose I was more open to his conversation than I would have been to many others.

This Z Lister is an Ex Dragon with a little retail and footballing background. A great fellow traveller in my experience.

I guessed the Z-lister even before the hint as I remember a couple of TRs in the dim and distant past referring to be on the LGW-MCO route, which I gather he flies regularly. They spoke positively about him but then the crew weren't fawning over him. :w

miopyk wrote:While I can have a pretty good guess based on the Z lister concerned it would be better if someone could actually confirm what UNIQ stands for.

UNIQ is the code for the "level above Gold" for Flying Club. The crew have a sheet where they list all the Upper Class seats, add the passengers names, meal / drink choices, flying club membership level etc. In theory, should a meal choice run out, the crew would ensure that UNIQ / Gold members get their first choice wherever possible.

Not strictly true as slinky has already stated. Zelebs and others can also be coded as UNIQ .I've been coded UNIQ on a flight (when AU) . I'm definitely not a zeleb ): and fell into the "others" category on this occasion.

OK, so I wrote into Crawley Towers about this flight, basically saying what I said in the original trip report, but with the added benefit of Crew members names, which I cannot use on here.

I've just had the reply below - which to be honest, fills me with zero confidence that anything would be different in future.

Dear [Kraken]

Thank you for your email about your flight from Orlando last month.

I have read through your comments about what happened on this flight and I completely understand your frustration. Although our cabin crew will always ensure that VIP passengers are taken care of, they certainly shouldn’t be singling them out for special treatment to the detriment of other passengers in this way.

All of our Upper Class passengers deserve exactly the same high standards of service and it is rather worrying to think that our cabin crew made such an obvious display of favouritism. Having a celebrity on board is not an unusual occurrence on our flights and this makes it all the more disappointing that their attention was so easily distracted from our other passengers.

You have every right to expect better and I am truly sorry that you we disappointed you in this way. Rest assured, I have fed this back to our crew management team and it will be addressed with the cabin crew on your flight.

I really hope you will be able to accept that this isn’t the way we usually do things. I’m sure the crew concerned will be sorry to know how their actions made you feel and I have no doubt that they will also be somewhat embarrassed at how this appeared.

Thank you for letting us know about your experience. I assure you that we have taken your comments on board and I hope you will again accept my apologies for the poor service you received. I trust that your flight to Orlando was more in line with what you would expect from us and I’m confident that next time you fly with us, everything will be just as it should be.

Kind regards

Kraken, print off the email and stick it in your passport.

It's the proverbial "Get out of Jail" card: any naffing around next time, present the email to the head honcho, sit back and soak up the UNIQ attention:-)
