After a tiring trip to the Orlando Theme Parks it became time to return back to dear old Blighty. The evening before I did OLCI (only achieving SEQ2 as the best B) ) as the the flight had been showing full for the previous couple of weeks to ensure we secured the pre assigned seats that I had chosen; thereafter we all went to Johnnies Hideaway for our last meal in the US.

Before continuing with the TR, I will digress a little to briefly comment on visiting the Theme Parks after a 7 or 8 year absence:

The Parks are far more intense than used to be the case when you could easily cover one in a day
The need for the occasional day by the pool to recharge batteries between visiting the Parks became essential
The preponderance of Mobility Scooters in the Parks provides and additional challenge for circumnavigation as woe betide you getting in there way!!
For all of that, Mrs Buns and I enjoyed having the extended family with us - the boys brought many a smile and seeing their faces gave a boost that was worth its weight in gold. My abiding memory will be on showing them the Apollo Space Capsule that went to the moon and asking if they could survive a week in there, the response was "has it got wifi?" oo) oo)

Anyway, back to the TR.

We spent the day sitting around the Hotel Pool (with the ladies doing a bit of last minute shopping in adjacent Outlet Mall) before leaving in the afternoon for the Airport, arriving there at 4:30 for the 7:35 flight.

As is our usual routine, I dropped everyone off at the Departures Level before returning the hire car to Alamo. On this occasion, the process was completed in no time and I was quickly with the others who had started to check in at the Upper Class Desk. Now for those of you who followed my outbound report, you will know that the ladies were travelling back in Upper, whilst us fellows had to make to with PE - if you have ever faced this dilemma, you will know there can be no other answer ;) That said the Check In Agent did try to suggest otherwise!!

Having two in Upper, combined with my Au Card, all 6 of the party obtained access to the Delta Sky Lounge.

Now our departure day coincided with the conclusion of a large SAP Convention. At check in there were a number of delegates seeking upgrades and moving to prime seats that are allocated at Check In.

The queues for the TSA Check were absolutely awful, as has been mentioned before, the priority line is anything but and I have to say the arrangements at MCO are the worst I have experienced at any US Airport n( As a result our usual foray into the Outback Steakhouse was curtailed.

On arrival at the Delta Sky Lounge we found the place to be fuller than I have ever seen it - full of SAP delegates, and standing room only!! Fortunately we were able to secure a little corner seat so that the boys could sit and play on their I Pads. 45 minutes before departure, boarding was called in the Lounge and we made our way to Gate 83.

We arrived at the Gate to find boarding had already commenced and we joined the Priority Boarding line to be followed by one of the SAP Delegates who made some reference to Mrs B, who promptly showed her Upper Boarding Card and he shut up (I suppose because he saw the children, he presumed we were just hanging about).

On entry to the aircraft, the party split and we made our way to the upstairs cabin. This is the first time I experienced the refurbished cabin on the Upper Deck and I have to say it still holds a little magic compared with downstairs, although it will never be quite the same as the previous configuration and mrs Buns will never go there she has decided. The side bins are of course very useful, but the bin above 24 H/K was not available for use by passengers.

Take off was only a few minutes later and with 451 on board, after a short taxi we were up and away. I had to remonstrate with the passenger in front who wanted to copy the example of the SAP delegates on the other aisle who went into full recline upon take off v( Hot Towels and drinks soon followed and to me one of the benefits of being upstairs is the speed of service compared with the PE Cabin down below.

Dinner
Braised beef in demi glace sauce
Chicken korma
Rigatoni pasta

Followed by Passion fruit cheesecake

I had the beef and my Godson the Chicken, both were good. i had pre-ordered children's meals for the boys and they enjoyed their Mac & Cheese (and i will take their dislike of the broccoli as a personal preference rather than the cooking).

Shortly after the ladies joined us and although failing to get me a Gentlemen Jack from Upper (because it had not been loaded) I did get a very nice glass of Port y)

Mrs Buns told me she had been welcomed back on board by the FSM (she was the only Au in Upper), something that did not occur in PE as had been our previous experience in PE back in March. She was also able to provide me with the new Upper Menu:

Starters
Tomato and leek soup(v)
Salmon rillettes

Mains
Fillet of beef
Seared salmon
Vegetable ravioli (v)
Grilled chicken salad

Pudding
Apple and pear almond bake
Chocolate fondant

Both the ladies enjoyed their meal and stated the beef was tender.

I then settled down to watch the Muppet Movie before catching a couple of hours sleep, the rest of the party slept soundly throughout. About 2 hours out of Gatwick, breakfast was served.

Now i know much has been said recently on V Flyer about the PE Breakfast. I quite like an omelette for breakfast and i think that portrays the ambiance of the Cabin - however, VS please take note: the inclusion of "nuked" baked beans does nothing to impress passengers v( v( v(

We eventually arrived at Gatwick about half an hour later and just after the flight from Cancun, making the collection of bags a more prolonged process than normal.

So, all in all, my impression?? It is what i have come to expect of a return flight from the US, nothing out of the ordinary (which was not the case on our previous flight back in March where i wrote to the CEO and received a very nice reply).

However I think I ought to leave the opinion to my 6'2" Godson who was experiencing PE for the very first time:
He was so impressed that he was asking me the cost of upgrades and is a full convert ;) ;) He has already decided that he waill travel PE next year when he goes to Florida. Who says i can act as a drug dealer ):

Thanks for reading

Thanks for the TR Buns, I've seen your outbound trip report as well, comments here apply to both. It's been a trip long in the planning, glad it worked out, the kids were happy with the food and you didn't end up with the Mac & Cheese!

The number of motorised wheelchairs at the parks is a joke, I suspect that many of the users are capable of walking. We don't do any more than 4-5 hours in one go with plenty of non-park time too.

I'm also 6'2" the seat pitch in economy is acceptable even with an infant on my lap, but looking forward to PE this year.

Unfortunately your trip seems to have gone so well you'll be pressed into action again in future.

Thanks for the (as usual) excellent TR.

Paul, I rather think the word "innocence" is more likely to apply to the aged these days!

SAP is a large "enterprise" software company. Presumably there was a conference thereabouts that utterly demanded the their physical attendance.

S A P is a German Computer system which is used throughout the World.

I was unfortunate enough to encounter it when I was at work and it cost my organistaion millions to have people come along and make it work n(

Hence my dislike of those who profess to be experts in said subject

My employer's 'competitive intelligence' webpage tells me that there was an S A P conference in Orlando attended by 22,000 delegates. This is where the sales folk get to over promise on the capabilities of the solutions, leaving it for we delivery consultants to go 'you said what?!' and then have to pick up the pieces whilst said sales folk sit somewhere in the sun on the commission earnings. Not that I am bitter, you understand....

As always a great TR Buns, but I have to say it would not be me sitting in PE whilst the t'other half was in Upper, the CC would have been out at check in :-)

Glad you both returned home safe from a well deserved break.

Thanks for the kind comments Iain y) y)

As I would never have been allowed to forget it should I had taken the Upper seat and being now one who seeks an easy life, despite the Check In Agent suggestions, peace and tranquillity on the Buns household has been maintained :D

Buns,

Enjoyed this read as much as the outbound.

Re Johnies Hideaway - did you enjoy your meal there? I've had some of the best evenings in Orlando at Johnies...especially when they have a band playing outside - great atmosphere.

I agree as well about the Disney parks - the amount of "mobility" scooters flying about is quite like some sort of demolition derby, especially when you take into account the momentum (velocity x weight) involved!!

Did you not manage to make the V-Flyer other lounge at MCO then (AKA the Outback Stakehouse)...Having flown back from TPA recently, I've missed the Outback there...

Finally, was interested to read your comments re the PE upper deck - to be honest the move away from totally PE upstairs was a straw that made the camel's back creek, and was a contributory factor in the family and I now flying mostly with BA - a shame, I'll never forget those first few flights with my daughter (starting at age 6) in PE on the upper deck - happy days!

Glad you had such a memorable time with the family in Orlando, it really makes it worth while to see the joy on young faces...

Take care,

Thanks for a great TR buns, it seems a good time was had by all. I hope Mrs B's shopping habits didn't cause you too much concern, but as a fellow shopaholic, when the mood is on you, it's on you lol.

Thanks for the comments guys y)

Concorde

Whilst the meal may not have been one of the best I have had there, my Godson wanted to try it and he was not disappointed, so that is what mattered.

A not-so-PC friend of mine has mentioned the term "chubby chariots" and even admitted he once rented one so he could ride along with a truly disabled chum whilst in the theme parks ):

In a way, missing out on the Outback may have been a blessing in disguise as the Airport was full to the brim - we will renew our acquaintance when we next visit.

Bretty

Mrs b will never be dissuaded from shopping - our regular holidays are planned around suitable shopping venues :w

Blacky

As Mrs buns who is now the one who still works for a living, it is in everyone's best interest to ensure the best seat is hers. In fact this is not the first time that she has had the only G available and I have remained in PE. Anything for a peaceful life I say and i promise not to tell Mrs Blacky ;)

Great TR buns, sounds like a great flight also (and from 2 cabins). No celebrity CC this time?
Did you go to harry potter world? What were the crowds like?
I'd love to go but the crowds put me off!
