Our annual holiday seems to have snuck up on us really quickly this year, back to California and Arizona this time.

Once again i managed to pick up a couple of G's LHR-LAX SFO-LHR, on the exact dates we wanted them (had to book 11 months in advance). To be honest i've never had trouble with getting G's on those routes.

Drive through check-in, and the private security does speed things up immensely, and had we not had one of the tom tom weighted dashboard mounts we'd have been through security in a couple of minutes. The security guys had never seen one before, and were very puzzled about what to do with it. For the first time I've seen a security guy with a sense of humour.

One of my favourite areas in the clubhouse is the roof garden, its always been empty every time we are there, it was a lovely bright morning, but a little cold.

Tinker belle turned up while i was up there:

We were too early for the clubhouse burger so elected for a simple Sausage Bap, sadly i don't drink so didn't use the bar, but i love the look of it:

All too soon our flight was called, Gate 17, the queue for economy snaked back out of the door, but no-one waiting in the UC queue, so we breezed through.

We flew on Surfer Girl:

One thing i've never noticed before is the queuing of planes to use the runway, but this year i did:

Seat 2a was in pretty good condition, but a little grubby in places like the pop up arm rest which had quite a few crisps in it. Not massively impressed with that, my OCD kept wondering what was in the bigger pocket!

Food on this flight was simply stunning, in the past I've not bothered with the mains, and just gone for the light bites or whatever they call them now,

Starter was Pear, Walnut and Blue Cheese salad, not normally a fan of blue cheese but it did taste good.

Main was the Fillet Of Beef, which again was unsure of ordering but i have to say it was brilliant.

Finished up with the Salted Caramel Chocolate Pudding, which was again brilliant though a little rich!

Overall i think this is probably the best food i've ever had on a plane, the presentation was great, and it was very tasty. I didn't have room for cheese though it looked good.

Afternoon tea was served about an hour and 45 before we landed and was the usual selection of sandwiches, and cakes, though i chose not to have cake this time, from all accounts the missus enjoyed hers.

I have to say i like the fact you can now have your iPads etc on until you get to the gate, i used to find the last 45 minutes of flights so tedious, but this one just flew by, when we landed i had just 2% battery remaining.

We left the plane via the doors near the bar, i think this is the normal door for LAX on an A340.

Amazing weather at LAX:

I was dreading the last time we went through immigration at LAX it was over 2 hours, this time, we were through and had picked up our bags within 20 minutes which was a relief. No pictures in immigration as they don't take kindly to it or so i've heard.

One final thing, Car Rental, we booked with Virgin Holidays this time, and picking up the car was a joy, no queues, a dedicated Virgin Holidays counter, and for the first time ever, no up-sell on the car, in 18 years of travelling to the US thats the first time!

Thanks for your trip report we went out at the beginning of October on the vS23 and had exactly the same to eat, in regards to the roof garden found it while wondering around as it was so mild a day when we went out and sat for ages , in fact had to go and get hubby to join he loves the smell of aviation fuel as having been an RAF engineer for over 39 years could have left him there all day. We also had an empty immigration hall on arrival at LAX.

We also booked our car with VH but picked up the next day at 8 in the morning, it was empty had done the online check in and the staff just said help yourself, in fact we got an upgraded SUV mentioned it to the guy on exit he said don't worry, and we weren't charged any extra for it on return, bonus.

Shall get withdrawal symptoms next year as have had to go with the dark side to get the dates and flights we wanted, am still holding onto several thousand VS miles just in the hope can get something in following years.

Thanks again for you lovely trip report and photos. Linda y)

Thanks for the TR, particularly with the pictures. Must do LAX & SFO again sometime as they are now the best value for G (if you can get them).

Out of interest why only three out of five for the crew and the IFE? You don't mention either in the body of the report...

Many thanks for the TR reports, good to hear such positive reports of the food on board. I have visited the LHR Clubhouse many times but never been up to the roof garden, I will put that right on next visit.

Average for the entertainment, based on the fact i don't tend to use it all on a flight, in the old days before i bought the iPad along, i could have a completely mobile phone and screen free 10 hours, since then it would have to something really special for me to sit and watch it on the plane.

As to the cabin crew, i've been on quite a few flights were the crew are at the top of their game, and converse with you, this wasn't how it was on this flight, i cant really put my finger on it. Once the initial drinks round was sorted after take off, there weren't that many offers of further drinks.

I think it may be the aircraft, i've thought the same on every a340 flight i've been on. perhaps something to do with the 747 having a pointy bit they have to walk to not like the 340 where they can walk up one aisle deal with things in the gallery / crew area then walk down the other aisle. I could be way off but like i say better on 747.

Thanks for the TR, love the pictures especially the sunny skies of LAX, especially as I am sat here watching it lashing down with rain. We too have used VH for car hire as it comes out competitively priced, no hassle for up sales and the prior online check in makes the whole process slick y) Great work on getting bags and out in 20 mins oo) oo)

Great Report!! Always so mouth watering to see the foodie pictures!!

I imagine the crews must be so used to setting food down only for it to get snapped before it gets eaten these days!!!
