writing this in-flight to post once i get there, briefly considered the in-flight wifi but it seems much more civilised to fly offline!

happily i got an EC->UC miles upgrade at check-in, was also offered upgrade on the return flight at the same time, so took it gladly :)

spent an enjoyable few hours in the CH, bubbly, shower, brekkie, shoe shine, bubbly, deli, bubbly, bubbly, espresso, it was a bit nippy in the CH this morning

headed for the gate when called, no queue, fast boarding, announcement was just 98 pax, looks like just 6 of us in UC

it’s a shiny new dreamliner, birthday girl

the UC cabin feels much more spacious than the A330, wider aisle, plenty of storage space, lacks the sparkly front ‘curtain’ of the A330 though, instead the front has some rather beige panels with edge lighting, also mood lighting along the cabin, bit odd when it went red all of a sudden

the new UC feels more like the pre-UCDS, no more see-through divider, tried out the controls, everything working so far, nice big windows, there's one seat with a label saying it is not in use due to a fault

amenity kit is a roll-up thing with basics in it, content seemed the same as in PE last week

no toilets at the front, so head back past the bar, very spacious with a baby changing area, i could actually manoeuvre without bumping my head which makes a change

had a peek at the PE cabin which seems fairly small, so it may sell out early on busier flights

UC galley is at the front, very audible from where i was

i’m in 3K as i like my bubbly tray on the right, but the A seats look a bit more private and should be quieter as the G seats face the K ones, might try switching to A for the flight back, otherwise aim for K 6 to 9 maybe

friendly CC welcomed me back as AU, had a chat, it was her first flight on the 787 too

perturbed to see the drinks list say no champagne on 787, instead it’s english sparkling v(

bit of turbulence at the moment and lunch on the way, so afterwards i will be off to the bar to formally put the usurper to the question

lunch...

starters:
- carrot, ginger and cardamom soup
- smoked salmon cuplet with crayfish tails
- mushroom gnocchi

mains:
- fillet of beef
- chicken teriyaki
- paneer musallam
- grilled salmon fillet with lentils

pud:
- toffee apple and pecan pud
- white chocolate and mango mousse

cheese and biccies

...torn between the beef and the salmon, i had the gnocchi (bit too creamy for me), beef (overcooked but that’s inevitable i suppose, should’ve had the salmon), and mousse (delicious, especially the sharp foam)

had a glass of the english sparkling with meal, lacks acidity, watery slightly sweet taste

had another at the bar, but it's just not right, CC said it was made specially for the 787 to keep it's bubbles longer, hmm, bring back the lanson!

watched a dvd and read a bit, afternoon tea sandwiches came, but were really dry

landed on time, but for second flight in a row someone was unwell, so we waited a while for paramedics to come and assess, only about 5-10 mins delay

off to the bus to go to immigration, only short queue there, baggage on the belt, about 10 minutes queue at customs

overall really enjoyed the 787, good CC, the food/bubbly were the only let downs

Thanks for the TR, and good to see that the UCDS mistakes are not being repeated on the 787.

Interesting point about the champagne, as I have seen both Lanson and English fizz side by side on the UC bar in the past, but never just English.

It's actually a pretty bold move by Virgin as it challenges the entrenched view that 'real' champagne is a minimum standard for this class of travel. Personally I'd rather have something that I like, and I've never been a fan of Lanson, either on the ground or in the air. Whereas I have had some very good English alternatives over the past few years (just finishing off the last of my Camel Valley stocks now...). They also tend to come in at the same sort of price point as a half decent mainstream champagne marque, so although ISTBC, my guess is that this is not a cost based decision...

That's a very low load count. U.S. Is this a low yield route for VS. I would gave thought that the new Dreamliner would have better served VS on the Delta hub routes where VS could show off its flagship to connecting Delta Passengers instead of putting it up against BA A380.

on the bubbly question, i'm not fussed about champagne/non-champagne, there are some extremely good nons to be had

my tastebuds certainly lose their way onboard, sweet tastes boosted wrt to the others, seems the '787' bubbly just isn't for me :(

only the red to keep me going :)

well, i chase them, but over the last year i have not caught many!

this is what seems to work...

for TA tickets, only PE W, or EC Y or B, can be used for miles upgrades

if you can get a W great (our travel policy makes it tough, so i go for B and hope it is within policy margin vs. least cost)

you need that fare on any leg that you want to be upgradable, by default our TA often issues tickets with different codes for outbound and return

armed with a W/Y/B, as long as there's a PE or UC seat available, i think a miles upgrade will be certain at check-in

so then it's also about choosing flights with light load, or getting to the airport early enough to have a chance to bag any remaining seat(s)

after flying, you must also contact FC to make sure you get the miles credited for the original fare as the VS systems seem unable to do it automatically

Thanks sungod. Sadly our TA (for work trips) will just book the cheapest fare in economy and usually I'll just be happy to get a VS booking, so I'll have to rely on the pay cash at the airport solution :)

I know it's all planned out before but the 787 is perfect for the job if the load count is low as the savings in fuel would be better than having an a346 or a 747 with only 98 pax onboard

I twas thinking of the 333. As its UC suites are not that popular the adverse affect would be less on this route, where as on a flagship route like JFK it would show the brand as youthful and classy
