Vista whinge

Had my nice shiny new desktop with Vista for a week now and managed to work around a few glitches (e.g. you can't open an existing Money 2005 file or re-install from back up - but you can export and then import all your data).

However:


I have been struggling with my web based outlook (both me and the Daught use this - her to link up with college and me for work). Today I've found out that Vista DOES NOT HAVE the DHTML files necessary to use web based outlook! It was in the beta version, but not the final one.

The solutions are beyond me, for example using a third party HTML WYSISYG editor control (I can find them but then what do I do with them?). I can't believe that Microsoft would, apparently, sabotage one of their own products[:0].

Does anyone know if there are plans to remedy this? There must be huge numbers of Web Access users. Or any experience/ideas for fixing this gratefully received!

I had my first call out to a Vista Home Premium machine. For the most part it is built very similarly to XP but, and oh boy how infuriating, the guy that called me had upgraded from XP removing all software the upgrade told him to remove, but loads of errors. Most I dealt with but there is one outstanding issue that I can't quite believe.

AVG Free was left on during the upgrade (Yes I know I would have removed it first) and now doesn't work. OK, so I run the uninstall from program files and get a message that I am not licenced to INSTALL this software. So I try add/remove progs and get the same problem. I search all known forums high and low and someone suggests putting all executable into compat mode and running the setup as an administrator. I do that and get a little further but still I can't uninstall.

So, I thought oh well I will stop the services from running and try installed a Vista compat app such as McAfee. I get part way through the install and get a message the McAfee is not compatible with AVG and therefore won't be installed and that I should remove it.

ARGHHHJHHHHHHH

Try the fall back of installing MSICUU which actually works with vista no problem, but guess what - AVG isn't installed by using an MSI so I can't use that either.

I now look for manual uninstall instruction from AVG and all they state is to use the uninstall prog. HOLY S%&^ - Just how difficult can this be. It is so integrated with the explorer interface I dare not try to manually uninstall myself in case I remove all programs, services and the OS still thinks it is there and therefore won't let me do anything else

I had two hours on the phone with Vista Tech support and in the end had to do a roll back, the only way to get the computer running again.
(I am having some glitches now with XP which I did not have before my battle with Vista.) Vista blamed Nero 7 even though nero says its compatable.
I am going to give it one more go and then throw it out I think.
Cannot live with BSOD, I thought I had gone far from that after windows Me!!!

Everything I've read up on about 'upgrading' to Vista, indicates that the best option is to backup all your user data than do a 'clean' install.

In preparation for my free express upgrade to Vista with my HP lap-top, I've printed out the 6 pages of instructions that need to be followed.

Reading through them, it seems HP are also sending a HP upgrade utility CD with the VISTA upgrade DVD.

You start with the HP CD/DVD which creates XP recovery disks, backs up your existing user files, updates your laptop's BIOS, removes all your existing HDD partitions (ie deletes everything) and re-creates the partitions for Vista, then you go onto the actual Vista install process and once that's done you finally go back to the HP CD/DVD to re-install all the HP specific software you had under XP.

So this process isn't upgrading your existing OS, it's replacing it.

Once I get my HP Vista Premium Express upgrade kit (which is on order) I'll let you know how it goes [:w]

My free Vista upgrade has just shipped, so looking forward to replacing my RC1 copy and installing it fresh onto my new PC Currently got a Vista score of 5.6 and most things work well so far.

I was tempted to say this too ... as I sit in front of mine willing the woes of Vista on the world. But hey, I wouldn't want anyone saying 'J'accuse' re. PC and Mac (again ... amenity packs ... !!!)

No, its good to see that Apple have admitted defeat in that aspect [:o)]
But again, what major company is going to buy those computers against what has become the de facto product in terms of price, the Dell range? Apple have always been expensive compared to IBM Compats.
