Didn't Canadian Airlines simply become Air Canada?
I think the same could be said of many airlines, although obviously not necessarily involving AC.
From those mentioned: TWA, BCal, National (?), Crossair, Buzz, GO etc.

Add Air UK Leisure to the list ... Sat in the Jump Seat of one of their 767's into Gatwick in the late 90's.
Where they the same charter company as Leisure International? My first ever long-haul flight to MCO was on Leisure International - pretty good charter company actually and I still have the free headphones somewhere! That was also a B767.
Also flown on BCal and Dan Air
Regards
Our first transatlantic was on Air UK Leisure in 1994 from MAN to Sanford. It was 8 hours late due to faulty toilets on the 767 but we still had a good time!!

I remember Air Canada and Canadian Airlines operating at the same time. I think Air Canada Bought/took over Canadian ala TWA/AA (ish). Nevertheless...Canadian are no longer
Correct, Canadian (Canadian Pacific or CP) was bought by Pacific Western in 1987 and re-named Canadian Airlines then the merged company was bought by Air Canada in 2000.
Scrooge,
Great topic; thanks! Really takes me back.
When I first entered corporate life I had to fly to Philly, New York and Washington a fair amount. The TWA service from LAX was either on 747s or L-1011 aircraft. The "Ambassador Class" product you remember so fondly was always outstanding. Totally separate cabin (with curtains!),big, comfortable seats, free drinks and headsets, larger blankets. TWA offered cheese and nibbles with your drinks and the FAs that worked the cabin remained in their dress uniforms throughout the flight.
One night, while returning to LA from Philly in Ambassador Class, I met someone ... oops, this is definitely not the place for that story![V]
Also loved the huge biz class cabin on the Pan Am 747. Also early in my career I found myself on an LAX-JFK PA 747, heading to the same meeting as our company's president and several of our vice presidents. I was "down the back", naturally, while the big boys were flying "C" class. Before we took off, one of the men (who eventually became a good friend and CEO of that company) spied me (okay, perhaps I was waving at him), had a few words with a flight attendant and in moments I was rubbing elbows with the "big boys" in business class. I remember that there was quite a large lounge area directly behind first class; our group remained there for most of the flight, enjoying drinks and conversation.
Though they are still flying Continental at one time had a fleet of DC-10 aircraft that it used on the LA-Houston route. IAH was another of my regular stops and soon I had mastered the art of snagging an upgrade. The premium cabin on the CO-1011 included a piano! Invariably some passenger knew how to play the ivories and others, lubricated by intoxicants, readily offered their karoake versions of popular songs. Just imagine that scene compared to most biz class cabins on today's airlines.
When I lived in San Francisco in the early 70s the best airline for getting to Southern Calif. was PSA whose aircraft were painted with a huge smile on the nose. I read somewhere recently that the airline is being resurrected.
Also in that era Eastern was considered quite a good airline. It had somewhat of a monopoly to all the "sun" destinations in the East and South, including Florida and the Caribbean. It also boasted the "Eastern Shuttle" which flew on the hour between Boston, New York and Washington. Later USAir and Delta picked up the Shuttle routes, though the atmosphere aboard is nothing special compared with the clockwork precision that EA perfected, especially being able to serve cocktails to a DC-9 full of businessmen in under 30 minutes.

I was just going to mention them. We flew with them in 1983, they flew to EWR, you actually paid your fare ON THE PLANE!! I kid you not. you booked the flight, turned up, got on, and the cabin crew came around like clippies taking your fare, WHILE YOU WERE AIRBOURNE!!! God knows what they would have done with you if you didn't have the fare. BTW the fare was £49 each way, I still have the ticket stub.

Yes I remember and flew with them as a kid, but I thought that was in the Eighties (but they were old aircraft even then - I have a feeling it was a Boeing 707)
I also thought I had seen their name appear recently when looking for flights to Spain.
Weren't they government owned and formed under General Franco?
EDIT: - Maybe not as I looked them up on Wiki, which then lead me to the following page

As it happens I was looking for a flight today to spain and yes Spanair's name popped up so I guess that was the name I was thinking off recently, however I defo flew with Spantax back in either 70's or 80's on a 4 engine jet which I thought may have been a 707 but as it appears they were a Douglas house it was probably a DC-8 well passed it's sell by date!

Crikey - I've just realised, I flew with these guys when I was a kid. I remember keeping the little paper coaster as a souvenier on our way back.
OMG - I've gone somewhere in my memory that I'd obviously blocked... [:0]
OMG - I flew with them too on one of these L-1011 TriStars MAN-MAH in August 1999.
Three months later the TriStars were gone. [:#]
