Britney Spears says it best:

Moderator
Moder-Moderator
You're a Moderator
Oh Moderator
Oh You're a Moderator Baby
You, You You Are
You, You You Are
Moderator, Moderator, Moderator.

My god, it's really just like Auden, isn't it? At any rate, here is a non-binding, advisory poll in which I seek to record the sentiment, pro and con, for the annointing of young Neil to Olympus when an opening is available. And no, Paul, I don't mean that kind of opening.

Should Neil be named a Moderator?

I have searched my Oxford Book of English Verse (Quiller Couch edn) and can find no other work by this Spears person. I am however taken by the similarities to some of Plath's later works, and would appreciate your guidance in locating some more of this fine verse.

As to the substantive question, it is definitely a two pipe problem.

My dear pjh, thank you for your kind note and interrogatory. To be sure, Spears has been quoted on numerous occasions stating that Plath's 'Daddy' was a major influence on her oeuvre.

Compare the Plath:

I have always been scared of you,
With your Luftwaffe, your gobbledygoo.
And your neat mustache
And your Aryan eye, bright blue.
Panzer-man, panzer-man, O You--

With the Spears:

Oh baby, baby how was I supposed to know
Oh pretty baby, I shouldn't have let you go
I must confess, that my loneliness is killing me now
Don't you know I still believe
That you will be here
And give me a sign
Hit me baby one more time.

A remarkable resemblance, both artists baring their souls and their conflicting passions of love and anger.

Whilst the standard anthologies of American literature (cf. Norton's) have largely neglected Spears' work (to their detriment!), her verse has been collected by such vaunted entities as Rolling Stone, NME, lyricsfreak.com, and 17 Magazine.

Good day to you,

GJ

After careful consideration and review of the Cray mainframe and servers at V-Flyer HQ, I have determined that this poll has been hijacked by nefarious entities, precluding an honest result. While final forensics have not been concluded, apparently a single device housed in a dubious bar & entrail shack has been used to cast multiple 'no' votes and erasing 'yes' votes. The investigation will continue.

Regardless of the faulty results of this poll, all of us are aware of Neil's behind- and before-the-scenes support for V-Flyer. My hope is that one day, when the boy has reached his majority, he will ascend to the level of Moderator and his glow of genius will light this site for all of us.

Carry on.

GJ
