Still multiple G's showing.....[:p]
It costs about 3,000 Yen (£12 UKP) to get to the Hakone/Mt. Fuji area by Shinkansen. It is a very quick journey, only about 30 minutes but is something you must do.
We took a tour with Gray Line - went up to the 5th station of the mountain by coach, had a Japanese meal, went souvenir shopping, went to the Visitors Centre etc then got taken on a cable car ride above an active volcanic area, went on a daft pirate ship across the Lakes then got the Shinkansen back. The whole day cost about £50, including the Shinkansen ticket. It was worth it because you get a lot nearer the top - there was still snow in May - than you can by train. The only unfortunate thing was that we went on a really rainy day so Mt Fuji was imposing and cold rather than beautuful. The coach journey to the Hakone region is really interesting as you see a bit of the rural Japan with paddy fields in terraces and steep hills covered in trees that reminded me of pictures I'd seen of China.
7 weeks till I go, it can't come soon enough

Paul, those 47 days will slip away quicker than you think...ours have.
Trip to Fuji sounds cool. I love exploring on my own and making my own itineries, but sometimes its just nice to submit to the will of some organised tour and see what they want you to see
..
Apart from the crappy Imax cinema at the Grand Canyon. I've just seen the grand canyon in all its real majestic glory, how is a crappy film about prospectors going to improve on that!

The problem with Fuji and Hakone is that unless you have a hire car or go with a tour you can't get easily to the Visitors Centre and 5th Station on the mountain itself. We had a lot of freedom on our tour, for example we chose to eat at one of the stops while other people did their own thing. The timings felt about right for me - and once you get to the Shinkansen station you are on your own.
About the Shinkansen - standard class is more like GNER First Class, there is ample leg room and the seats wide enough for my fat behind. There are 5 seats across not 4, and a wider aisle than on British trains so the carriages are more spacious. The train is also quieter and I would compare the experience more like an air journey than a train journey.

Anyone for a dip in the Spaas I've not used the Spa for my last few flights now as I've not had time [n]
No wonder I couldn't one for 11:00

Depends what time we get there I guess. Will take some shorts just in case. When a flight is that time of the day I generally apply the "get up and go" theory.
