Well you can write on friends walls, through food at them, post embarresing pictures (all very adult)...

Oh and bite them and turn them into Zombies.

Facebook I get. After trying it, Second Life I certainly do not!

Cheers!

Facebook is so much more grown up then MySpace ... really it is.

Second Life I gave up with, I'm having enough of a problem trying to get a first life!.

Well, I've joined the V-Flyer group thingy and still have no idea what I am doing, or what I should do next, so I will just sit back and see what happens, hopefully it won't be too scary! [:I]

Am I the only person here that is in their twenties and ISNT on one of these sites?

Thanks,
Sarah

Nope, but I recon we are in a rather small minority!

I have never really understood the mass hype behind Facebook and the furore its created, from what I have read its more a competition to show how many "Friends" you have and thus elevate your status to that of online deity.

Having never had an account with FB perhaps I am missing the all important nicotine factor? :D

Well I've spent some more time exploring FB this evening and I still don't get it, maybe I'm missing the obvious, but I just don't get the point of it, what I am meant to be achieving?

Don't worry Sarah - not long before you're the only one in your thirties who's not on one of these sites... [:w]

You cheeky Bastard! I'm only 2 months older that you Paul!

Well, i did try out Facebook for a bit. I signed up to find two guys i was at Uni with waiting for me, which was very cool as i hadnt heard from them since graduation. Got added by a load of old school chums, which was fun, as the last time i saw them we were all 16 so it was great to see how they looked now, and I also had a look at the V-Flyer page.

After that, hmm ... it got difficult to really see the point of it, other than to connect with old friends yet undiscovered, or to look at peoples photos. I closed my account last week.

So, i feel slightly younger and hipper for having given it a go, but now i'm back to Radio 2 and comfy slippers. :)

Thanks,
Sarah

Oh how times have changed.

I was just looking at some old threads and found this one. My stance in 2007 was that I just didn't get Facebook at all, and 3 years later in mid 2010 my stance is, how the hell would I cope without Facebook Quite amusing reading it actually :D

Neil, dear boy, there are plenty of folk on Facebook considerably older than me. LSoM, to name but one.

And shame on you for playing the age card so close to my significant birthday. I expected better of you.

I'd hoped your unexpected elevation to Mod might have mellowed your acerbic wit, Neil, but obviously not. As the old saying goes, you can take the lad out of Humberside...

At the risk of offending some people I just want to have my "rant" with regard to facebook. I have never been on facebook in my life. Well how are you qualified to judge I hear you cry!In truth I suppose I am not,but I have never and will never sign up to facebook for one simple reason. I can't stand the type of comments people put on their profile pages such as " Jim is having a cup of tea" or "Fred is happy 'cos he is wearing a yellow jumper". How inflated must the ego's of these type of posters be to think for one micro second that the rest of the world is even vaguely or remotely interested in or indeed gives a flying F*@K about such mundane crap.

However, it's not all bad is it? I mean it's pretty good for making contact with old friends/ collegues Etc as Sarah has described (but you could use Friends Reunited for that I suppose)and telling the world about interesting things like "Dave is happy 'cos he has just mud wrestled Jenifer Aniston and is about to share a shower to remove said mud-pics to follow!" Now that would be of interest to some(including me) :)

Sorry for the rant but until the mundane ego fuelled crap is driven form the pages of Facebook I for one will not touch it with the proverbial barge pole.

Clearly, due to its popularity I'm in the minority in my thinking therefore I must be missing the point......can anybody tell me what the point is? ?| ?|

NOC

I have "friends" who change their FB profile throughout the day and I can't begin to comprehend where they find the time! However, it doesn't bother me, in fact if it's important enough for them to want to share it then that good enough for me.

It certainly isn't everyones cup of tea, but it is not about ego at all. It is a modern and fun way of keeping in touch with a lot of people, quickly and easily, who due to various reasons (location, lifestyle) it would not be possible to do so without it.

If you don't like it(although as you say without trying it, it is hard to give a well based opinion) then that is fine, but the fact it is SO popular worldwide would suggest that it is going to be part of the way the world communicates and socialises for quite a while to come.

Neil,
I quite agree when you say it's the modern way of keeping in touch etc which is great. I am simply puzzled by the people who think anyone should be remotely interested in the mundane day to day trivia of what whould appear to be a mundane day to day life.

As I say, I have not tried it but I am fairly well informed of said mundane posts by friends/colleagues etc.

Save for giving me the reassurance that my mundane existence isn't the only one :D

As it's neither folk dancing nor incest, I have tried FB but found myself confounded and put off by the sheer amount of cr*p that appears in the updates (what the hell is a "snowball" anyhow?). It is, however, a good way to keep up with some musicians whose appeal has become more "selective" over the years.

The trick of getting into the swing of Facebook is realising that there really isn't any real importance or meaning in Status Updates. They are not intended to be news items; they're thoughts, feelings and casual chatter of your circle of friends - much like the idle chit chat you'd have in the pub. I, obviously, have no interest in a random stranger telling me that they're having a cup of tea; but I don't get to see that status, since if they're a random stranger, they don't appear on my Facebook page. Whereas if an old friend posts a banal status update about their day, it's not so much about the content of the status, but there's an ongoing communication with friends that is difficult to maintain without Facebook. For example, I'm going for a drink with a friend I've known for 25 years, but not seen in the last 5, but since we've both been linked on Facebook for the last few years, it doesn't feel like I haven't seen him in 5 years. Those are friendships that would be difficult to maintain over email or post - as you feel compelled to write a verbose letter, and if you're anything like me, I'd struggle to find the time or motivation to write long letters to the large group of friends who I'd like to keep in touch with but just don't see every day. Friends Reunited was an early pioneer in getting people in touch, but it does offer the ubiquity of Facebook nor anywhere near the toolbox of social networking features.

I think, like most, I found Facebook an odd beast when I first looked at it. And I was, also like most, initially nervous about what I typed into the status update field - not wishing to announce to the world anything as mundane as having a cup of tea. But then as you get more comfortable with the paradigm, you realise these are your friends, and if you don't want to hear about their day, they probably shouldn't be on your friends list anyway.
