As predicted (and something a few college friends of mine are going to have to accept), Blu-Ray has won and this will be confirmed when, not if, Toshiba pulls the plug on HD-DVD...

If Wally World has stopped that pretty much kills HD IMHO. Once Blockbuster decide which way, that'll kill it.

In addition to Walmart, Netflix and Bestbuy also pulled out of the HD-DVD market (I don't think BB pulled out completely but they said they would recommend Blu-ray over HD-DVD). I think Netflix has more impact than Blockbuster nowadays. Though the Blockbuster out by me only has Blu-ray I believe.

Rumour has it Toshiba will be making an announcement soon about the future of HD-DVD and it's not expected to be 'we are continuing with it regardless'

Technically not.

Toshiba has stated it will not make any further HD-DVD Players but will continue to support the 1m users. It doesn't say that Universel et al will stop producing HD-DVD features (although it does seem rather likely)

Only a matter of time now methinks. Anyone remember if this has been quicker than the Beta/VHS battle, it seems so to me?

Sony were the people behind/supporting Betamax if I remember correctly, and as I understood the betamax format was the better quality product at the time, but it just never took off.

This time around Sony have the backing of the majority of the major studios, one being the Disney Corporation.

When I first heard of the hi-def revolution a few years back, and this potential head to head 'war', I thought then there is no way Sony are going to lose out twice!

( P.S. I bought a PS3, in mind that I was getting a cheap Blu-ray player at the time! - I'm just pleased that my investment seems safe for the moment.[y] Pity those poor XBox players[}:)]
