Well Helen Mirren obviously, ever since I saw her lithely squirming on the table during The Cook The Thief His Wife Her Lover I've been a fan ... [:0]. Though Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandel is superb!

As for others, would like to see Scorsese get a win and Di Caprio too ... but not sure if The Departed was actually the best film of the year?

I thought Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, was amazing. Definitely like to see her win an Oscar for it.

I wanted Steve Begg to win the BAFTA for the Special Visual Effects in Casino Royale, you may remember he was kind enough to supply those pics of G-VWIN for V-Flyer when she was doing her cameo for the movie; but alas, as I had thought it would, Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest took the honour.

He is not one of the nominees for the Oscars so will have to wait for another chance.

I was really pleased Paul Greengrass took Best Director for United 93. Saw it for the first time on Saturday night, wow - an amazing film! Really moving and powerful. If you do watch it, be sure to check the credits to see just how many people play themselves in it.

Helen Mirren again ... has she won every Best Actress award this season for The Queen? From dowdy homicide detective to Head of State. Not a bad transformation, and nice to see Judi Dench so pleased for her when the name was announced.

Shame Casino Royale didn't get a few more, a great film and one that certainly rescued the Bond franchise. I'll wait to see his next film but for me Mr Craig could be the best Bond yet!

Just the Oscars to go. I'll be setting my alarm for stupid o'clock to watch them live again.

I bought United 93 on DVD when in the US at Christmas, as you rightly say Foz, Greengrass deserved BAFTA for his superb direction of what must have been a really difficult movie to put together. Hadn't observed the credits in detail so it was interesting to read your comments about the number of people who played themselves.

I would like to see Scorsese take the Best Director Oscar for The Departed. (IMHO he should have got it for Gangs of New York in 2002). I thought The Departed was a great movie and I think he is long overdue to be honoured by the Academy (5 previous nominations for Best Director)!

My money is on Best Actress, Helen Mirren for the Queen and Forest Whittaker for Best Actor for The Last King of Scotland.

A great job he did too, best Bond in a long time. The judges and critics(Barry Norman always slagged off Bond on the beeb)have never been kind to 007,must be jealousy of the fantastic success of the franchise.
