Just a quickie - I have my new shiny MacBook Pro. Father has a 4 year old Powerbook. We can make iChat work between us; he can see me, I can't see him. Why? Well because his Mac doesn't have the integral iSight camera that mine has.

Apple don't seem to make the separate iSight anymore, those still available from third party sellers are very pricey, and I don't want a second-hand one, so what's the best webcam out there that I can guarantee will work with iChat?

The iSights were taken off the shelves as they were not RoHS compliant, as they are in demand still, this has pushed up the prices for used ones.

Damn. Why didn't I think of that? He only lives at the other side of the village... Our intention, HL, is to allow mdvipond jr. to bid/be bid a Merry Christmas whilst we're in Oz. Ha, ha, ha!

ukcobra - what made the cams 'non-compliant'?

Regrettably, yes. All down to my dad. Felt he couldn't face the flight. Mum's none too pleased, but once a 66 year old man makes his mind up one will usually find that there's very little point in trying to change it.

RoHS compliancy means that that you can recyle the product, and that the product should not have any Hazardous Substances, i.e RoHS stands for Removal of Hazardous Substances.

Therefore products sold after a given date must be RoHS complaint, clearly something in the iSight is nasty and it was pulled from the shelves when the date came round. I don;t know exactly what it is, but I am sure google will give up the answer.

As all Macs (apart from the Mini) have a built in camera, I guess there is no need to build a replacement.

the mac pro does not have an i-sight built in.... any mac that requires a separate monitor does not have one built in.... unless they start adding them onto the monitors!
