Not sure how many of you have been watching The Restaurant on BBC 2? The idea is couples (some very poor) run a restaurant in order to win the top prize of going into partnership with Raymond Blanc, each week three couples undertake a challenge and one of them goes home.

Having eaten in last winners restaurant it is clear that this is all about the PR from Raymond but nevertheless its quite interesting viewing.

This evenings challenge sees three of the couples having to come up with and cook a menu for First Class passengers on a BA 747. They then have to cook it and the first class passengers, who include Raymond and his inspectors, decide who was the worst etc.

Considering the debate that is often had on VS UC food it will be interesting to see just how well these couples do and how difficult it is to produce good quality airline food.

Whilst the planes will not take off, they will only be allowed to use equipment that the CC have access to.

(Mods please feel free to move into a correct forum as I was unsure where to put this).

Do they have the same budget? Now that would be interesting ... cook a tasty meal for 59 p or whatever the cost of a UC meal is [}:)]

I think they must have. In last weeks challenge, which involved Oxford Colleges, they had the same budget as the College chef would have.

59p [:o)]. The other week they had a motorway service station challenge and the total meal had to cost £1.50 or something. One couple managed to get a meal down to 60p, looked awful.

Will be interesting to see how they do.

Does the 59p include the bland powder? Or the 20kW to nuke it in the oven?

Poor food and waiting for the main course for over an hour. The concept works but sadly they just looked like amateurs. Some family friends, who visited on another occasion, refused to pay after waiting two hours. The chef (cant remember his name) came out and started telling them they didn't know how difficult it was to run a restaurant plus a few expletives, etc etc. Interesting to see that the they have now closed the restaurant and the partnership has ended with Raymond.

As for the Mexican restaurant couple, the pub they are using is in my old village. No surprises that the pub has now gone back to what is was before the show.

LOL! Sadly I admit that occasionally I get drawn into this kind of armageddon TV unawares, and last night's show was one of those occasions. What suprises me is that RB has sunk to this - one can only assume that it's making him a nice fat wallet.

The recent Professional Masterchef, at least the last week of it, ended up being a pretty good show IMHO. The worst of that one? Having to suffer endless repetitions of segments, because we all have such short attention spans. Oh, and India Fisher's narration (both script and delivery) made it like a trailer for the Adult Channel. Or so I am led to believe.

I might just have to Sky plus tonight's The Restaurant and, ahem, very quickly skim through it at a later date when I have plenty of time on my hands.

I watched it. It was quite interesting. To be fair, they were attempting F class, not J class food. Most of their attempts - the Lancashire hotpot for one - came out looking frighteningly like UC food to me (and that's not a compliment...).

I enjoy most of the Masterchef shows, if only to marvel at how much food Greg Wallace can shovel into his mouth on one fork/spoon.I thought Roux Jr was a fantastic judge on the pro series always encouraging and refreshingly never belittling for ratings sake.

Cwoooor! Wallace grew on me in the end. Rather than tasting each individual part of a dish, his mantra is to load up a shovel load of all the different component parts and see how it worked - or not. 95% of the time GW was like a nodding dog to Roux.

Totally. One of the most down to earth chaps there are. I spent most of a weekend in Jersey about three weeks ago at various lunches and dinners with him, the old man Albert, and their respective other halves. They were all so at ease with themselves and the inevitable attention they received at the various eating establishments. Albert & his OH sat in row 2 behind me on the way back, and wolfed down the BA brekkie.
