Italy has fined Irish low-cost airline Ryanair 3m euros (£2.5m) for failing to help passengers after cancelling their flights during the volcanic ash crisis.

Hmm.. interesting development.

Whilst I am no fan of rynascare, it seems a bit arbitrary for one EU government to decide that a particular airline is guilty, and to impose a huge fine in this way.

What will happen to the money (if it is paid)? Will it go to the passengers as compensation, or just line the Italian government's pockets?

Do the airline (or other airlines) have any right to appeal - or even a right to a fair hearing?

This could be a nice little earner for all the EU governments, if each of them decides to have a go at every airline who, in their opinion did not act properly during the volcano crisis.
