So after a long dark winter it's finally only just over 2 weeks until I get to go to the Dominican! My friends and I are in the process of getting the last bits and peices sorted but we're abit confused by the plus situation, well I admit I am, I blame the blonde hair ii)
Having never been over the pond before and google searches having just confused me more I was wondering if someone could explain in lamen terms what I need to get to take with me to make things work over there? Also is there anything that will definitely not work?
Thanks in advance! ^)

Never been to the Dominican Republic Lizz but, assuming it is on the same power system as the US, a quick trip to Asda/Tesco/Sainsbury or any other High St supermarket to buy a UK to US adapter should see you right :) Enjoy your break.

In the DR, the mains voltage and sockets are the same as in the USA.

Their plugs and outlets look like this

The voltage is 110V AC at 60 Hertz (versus the 230V at 50 Hz here in the UK), so you will need appliances that will run on the lower voltage. Most portable things like laptop chargers, mobile phone chargers, camera chargers, etc., will run on the lower voltage without a problem.

You may have an issue with irons, styling wands, straightening irons, hairdryers, and anything else with a heating element, so you should check the labelling (usually in small embossed print) on the device. Most stuff designed for travel will work on different voltage systems though.

For example something which says something like "Input: 100-240V AC, 50-60 Hz" will work, as both the V value and the Hz value of the power in the DR fall within the input range on the appliance.

Something which says "Input: 220-250V AC, 50 Hz" won't work.

If it turns out you need to take something which only runs on UK voltage, you need a transformer-adapter, which changes the power characteristics, as well as bridging the different plug and socket types.

If you're in work again before your trip, you'll find the usual range of airport shops, such as Boots, will sell suitable adaptors. You need an adaptor which has a UK socket (for your device to plug into) and a US plug (to go into the wall outlet).

I would buy more than one adaptor too, as you'll only end up cursing yourself when you need to charge up two things at once, or you can lend one to a friend.

HTH!

Thank you! Everytime my dad tried to explain it to me he started waffling on! Least I know everything will work fine, I now also know for definite that my hair straightners will work, whether my hair will stay straight out there though is another question! Thanks again!

I recently bought one of these from QVC, they are excellent. They have all the different connectors for every country in one plug which can unclip and be turned around different ways. You can use them to take UK items abroad and also they will allow you to plug foreign items (2 pin etc) into UK 3 pin plugs.

They also have on the top 2 USB slots so you can charge cameras, satnavs, ipods etc without having to take the extra plugs.

Good price too

Okay, so packing has commenced, and I just want to check (as I've sort of forgotton about everything due to mad shifts at work) that my straightners will definitely work over there.
They say 110-230Vac, 60Hz/50Hz, 120W on them, is that okay?
Thanks again in advance.
