Blackberry, sigh

As some of you may remember I HATED my htc hd2 with a passion, so with only 6 months left on my contract I opted to by a BB curve on pay as you go with t-mobile and stick my sim card in it then sell my htc to one of them recycling companies and basically get the money back! I agree with what people say, they're good phones, I'm glad I can type text messages better now however I feel as though I need a degree on the inside workings of a blackberry to make the bb messenger thing and the facebook app work and email etc. Now the man in t-mobile said something about having to ring customer services to put something on my contract to make it work but I didn't quite catch what he said. Now I assume it's something to make the above work but does anyone know if I can do it myself somehow? It's starting to drive me mad

That's one of the problems with Blackberrys as the networks do often sell them without the Blackberry data add-on.

Blackberry data is not usually included in standard tariffs. T-mob are correct in saying you need an add-on on your existing tariff.

I know several people who got caught out with this and ended up having to pay more per month as they wanted the data add-on.

Ah I see, well as long as it's not too overpriced I'll pay it for the time being. If I get another one, I'll change the contract.

I feel old hating all this new technology so but I miss the simplicity of them old nokias! All I want is to call, text and check facebook and maybe the news or google easily on my phone!

I've managed to get it sorted this morning. Having to pay an extra fiver a month though I also had to speak to some foreign woman on the phone, I wish call centres wouldn't employ them, I'm all for equal oppertunities but I could barely understand her!!

What a timely topic! I'm on the cusp of getting either a BB or a smartphone, only waiting cos my contract isn't up yet - and I've been a little undecided what to get. Kind of leaning towards the BB, but I didn't know about the data add-on thing either. Is that the same with all networks or do some include it? I wouldn't be happy to be paying extra for it, not if the thing is useless without it!

I too know a couple of people who have been caught ot with this.

(My Hubby upgraded to a "basic" nokia in May and really regrets it now and wishes he'd gone for an iphone, after playing about with mine, I'm surprised as he doesn't really "do" technology)

If you like the idea of a smart phone but not an Iphone then consider the Samsung Galaxy-S its awesome, it has a much better hi-def Amoled screen which is sharper and bigger than the above and not as chunky, email is very easy as is swype which is a new way too text as you wipe your finger around the screen instead of tapping it which can be tricky to the letter you want.

I think some do the add on with a contract if you get that phone to start with, but because I've bought it on pay as you go and put my sim in I've had to add it. It's for about 6 months as I say so I'll make do then change my contract to suit it better if I decide to go for a BB again.
I have to say though, I've fallen in love with the phone. The fact it gets emails into your inbox, any facebook updates and what not as well, and BB messenger which is useful if you have someone on there and don't have their number or something.

I'm not a fan of the iphone, I like them and will happily play around on one but I wouldn't have one, I've had enough of touch screen phones, they drive me crackers! Plus the contracts are awful on them, everyone has one and they're generally overrated to my mind!

We have just been issued with Blackberries from Iphones and the models we have got are awfull. The only good thing is the camera. The email, which is reported as being more secure hence the reason for changing (or "migrating" which seems to be the buzz word with IT at the moment) is now useless as none of us can be bothered to use it as it is so slow to use the (noisey)keyboard. We are reviewing going back to Iphones once the security has been confirmed/reviewed.
The satnav/locater feature is also a complete waste of time.

I have a BB for work and and a personal Iphone. Both have their good points and bad in my opinion. Work wise the BB wins as we have an enterprise package that is good value gives me constant network access with free emails and web access worldwide without any limits. Emails and texts are reliable and I find the system extremely easy, - my home emails come through on the handset as well so I only have to take one phone away with me. I agree if you rely on apps including satnat it won't be for you as the screen is too small and the apps are not as good as Iphone. My Iphone is great for personal use, I like the large screen for the web and the apps are brilliant but it takes me much longer to write emails and saving, filing etc appear much more complicated! It may be just my incompetence but I also seem far more prone to accidentally sending emails/messages half completed or to the wrong person on the Iphone! I guess it depends on what facilities you use the most and what works for you as a business.

Others will no doubt disagree but if you already have a BB I'd go for the IPad and in my humble non IT opinion you will then have all bases covered!

The new Google experience phone, to be announced on the 8th Nov may be worth waiting for. The 'Nexus Two' will be pure Android, so you get updates from Google, and won't have to rely on the manufacturer and telco to approve updates.

I've now fallen in love with blackberrys! I couldn't do without being able to type on a proper keyboard again also the bb messenger feature means I can get in touch with people I wouldn't usually do.
I was never a fan of apps so that doesn't really bother me.
I think I'll go for the torch (unless something better comes out) when I upgrade, best of both worlds then although the lack of a touch screen really doesn't bother me at all.

The Ipad is very nice. But for now Mrs H and I have settled for an IPhone (telephony and emailing etc) and Kindle E readers for our books.

You can have your Kindle books on the IPhone as well.

We are very impressed with the Kindles.
