Just looked on National Rail Enquiries.

Friday:- Trains leaving Kings Cross at 18:00, arriving York 19:51. First Class advance single 70
Sunday:- Trains leaving York at 16:03, arriving Kings Cross 18:15. First class advance single 70
All using National Express East Coast.

Off-peak first class return is 199

These times are just plucked out of the options returned.

Party train both ways?

How about a 17:00 party bus on the Fri eve - Grand Central - gets in at 18:51, 70 advance 1st? [:)]

EDIT: Just realised Grand Central sell National Express via their site, so the 17:00 is National Express

Just been reading this thread. Since when did trains become so expensive?

My one way train ride from London to Halifax this week was 127 in standard class. Shocking. Why are our trains SO much more expensive than our European cousins?

Thanks,
Sarah

I don't think 70 is too bad for a first class single, but it's still not cheap. You can see why LCC are doing well internally.

it's not only the cost, but it seems like everything is made to be as unpleasnt as possible. The only conselation it that with fuel and parking, it's almost as cheap. Plus i can open a bottle of bubbly too. [;)]

Trains on Fridays and Sundays are always more expensive, as that's when everyone want's to travel. In the UK, we don't know if our railways are a public service or a travel 'choice' so market forces come into play. A

t the risk of sounding boring, Grand Central is 94 return in First Class...

127 Standard Class is very expensive to Halifax - the maximum one way fare should be 114... with most trains qualifying for a 134 Off Peak return.

127 is the fare VIA London, its slightly cheaper VIA Manchester. Its still crazy to me, considering how much cheaper it is to drive there ...

Sarah

We're thinking of driving up to York as well as we are not London based.

Just be mindful that York can be a parking nightmare, although there is a decent car-park opposite the Hilton.

I see no mention of the Jorvic centre yet?? especially if its raining, could be giggle..

I'm still undecided about mode of transport. It's not so much the Friday but getting home on Sunday. Ending up at London can be a real PITB, especially if there are engineering works.

Depends on if the new motor arrives too.

As there are parties travelling up on Friday night and Saturday morning maybe we ought to plan a meeting point for Friday night, the bar at the Hilton might be a good location perhaps, and a place for lunch or an activity on Saturday?

Thanks,
Sarah

Lots of good places to eat in York :)

Saturday night if we fancy a splash out J Baker's Bistro Moderne (www.jbakers.co.uk) or Masons Bistro (www.masons-bistro.co.uk).

Hilton Bar seems an obvious point for Friday night.

The grazing menu at jbakers looks interesting. It'll be no Fat Duck, but worth a try.

Yep sounds good, wonder if Mvipond has any experience of this one??

Could do with knowing plans for a meet up on late Sat morning/lunchtime, as we'll only be up late morning as have to put mini NH into kennels [}:)]

'Fraid not, old boy. My trips to York all too often involve liquids rather than solids. The only place we've eaten over the past few years when we do the pub crawl is the Evil Eye Lounge on Stonegate. Nice, if you like spicy things on sticks. Oh, and the mojitos are very probably the finest I've ever sampled...

Right...trains booked[:)]

We've decided to travel up on the Saturday as would have been a bit of a rush on the Friday evening after work. We arrive York 12:56 on the Sat and leave 11:29 on the Sun. Decided against 1st Class as couldn't resist advance standard singles at 21 each!

Really looking forward to seeing everyone again. Just need to book hotel now, probably Hilton.

Cheers
