Just posted my review of Jet Set Go! - The Cabin Crew musical. Methinks most here would enjoy it.

High camp at 35,000 feet.

Jet Set Go!
4/5

Take Note Theatre
Musical Theatre @ George Square. 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th August. 15:45 (1h15)

I'm hardly giving much away by saying Jet Set Go! Ð the Cabin Crew Musical Ð is rather camp. It's not for nothing that Caroline Reid has managed to build a pretty successful career as alter-ego Pam Ann swishing down the aisle serving glamour with barely concealed sexual innuendo. And if you are a fan of Pam Ann, then you're going to find it hard to resist this toe-tapping, wickedly funning offering from Take Note Theatre.

The action takes place on a flight to New York JFK from Heathrow, with an overnight stop and back again. There is frenetic activity as we prepare for take off, and some slick choreography and surprisingly clever harmony work at play here, revealing that this show is not necessarily going to be as shallow as first impressions may indicate. The sharply-written lyrics rattle through all the clichŽs frequent-flyers will be familiar with on boarding, and this opening number is perfectly pitched to get the full-to-busting crowd in the mood for their flight.

The crew are, for the most part, predictable stereotypes; gay male crew, blonde bimbos, oversexed pilots, snappy pursers; but the subject matter demands these strong characters to really work. And work it does. The strong cast deliver Pippa Cleary's score confidently, and with comic timing that shows they really understand this material. Above all, this is a comedy, and some of the gags get pretty cheap at times, but amongst the camp froth there's also moments of tenderness.

If there is any criticism of this show, then it would be that the Portacabin they are performing in isn't big enough to do them justice. The lighting Ð because of the challenge of the space Ð is very basic, and there is a feeling the show needs space to breathe. Judging by the sell out audience this show could sustain a bigger venue, and let's hope it does. I, for one, will be happy to see it grow beyond Edinburgh.

Not one to be a kill joy but have you been there yourself recently ? We had the misfortune to go there for lunch last month and it was apaling - wrong wine delivered and when pointed out to the server we just got a grump. When the food came out it was cold and unapetizing so it promptly went back and we left without paying (the manager wasnt fussed)to go to Browns a couple of doors away and had a much better experience. May have been an off day as diners were having very similar experience to us - last time I was there (in Nov) it was good but something has gone very wrong.

Anyway if you do decide to try it I hope it has improved greatly and that you all have a truly fabulous time in my favourite UK City.

I have to agree with HG.
Please don't fall for the George st culture. There's so much better in Edinburgh.

If you want to know anything from someone who lives here, just ask.

I'll try and meet up with you this year too.... Provided you find somewhere better to eat! ;-)

We went last year (albeit a small group) and it was fine. Would be happy to look at recommendations if anyone has any though? It can be a hard job finding a restaurant for a large number during the Fringe.

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,

I am sure someon here will give you a list, failing that ask the Concierge at The Balmoral to source one for you - they are excellent.
Honestly I have to say it was the worst ever 'restuarant' experience of my life and I would not want any of my V-Flyer friends to experience anything close to what we had to endure. I am sure you will find better even with a modestly sized party at this time.
Anyway I hope you have a truly excellent time in Edinburgh and I look forward to hearing all about it when I get back from Marco Island.

Best Regards,

HG

this season, I am mostly liking to eat at:
- Outsider on George IV bridge
- The Tower at the museum of scotland

Both have castle views (!) and lovely grub. Pricey, but worth it.

Looks like a c*ck up on the Buns organising front here[n] Our friends from Scotland who are also in EDI the same weekend have booked us into the 'Potted Potter' which starts at 12.45 on the Saturday, so we will have to take a rain check[n][n][n][n]

Mrs Buns & I would certainly be up for 'Jet Set Go' later in the afternoon - and in usual V-Flyer fashion will 'go with the flow' for Saturday evening[:w]

Looks like the place is on a slide then, time for a Sat Lunch rethink. Let me go look at the places McCoy suggested.

As for Sunday, Sunday lunch at the Balmoral before the train for some of us at 2pm? So 12:30pm booking, should give us enough time for 2 courses at least.

http://www.thebalmoralhotel.com/dining/ ... h_menu.htm

£14.95 for 2 courses.

Thanks,
Richard

EDIT:
There is a lunch menu at the Tower restaurant McCoy suggested - £12.95 for 2 courses:
http://www.tower-restaurant.com/lunch_menu.html

or we could try it's sister restaurant The Witchery,
http://www.thewitchery.com/starters.html

There are 2 other places on George St I know:
Browns as used by HG: http://www.browns-restaurants.com/menu-edinburgh.php

or The Living Room where a group of us ate last year:

Better late than never, but Sue and I are going to sit down and look at booking shows today.

May try and do Jim Bowen / Potted Potter on Sat lunch, but love the idea of Sunday lunch at the Balmoral. Our train on Sunday is the 1700, so we have a bit more time.

So many shows, so little time. [:D][;)]

I'd second The Tower. Only had dinner there but the nicest bit of fillet I've had in a long time (and the thick cut chips are to die for[:D]).

I have done my sums, checked and double-checked but alas, there is no way I can make EDI this year. The fares and accommodation, even at Richard's very generous rate are going to set me back the best part of Û500 - and that's before a morsel of food passes my lips or I even get to look at a booking list for the shows.

Sorry folks, but have a good time

Hello People

Regarding Saturday lunch put me and Mat down for wherever you sort out (ideally a bit later than midday though if possible). Sure whatever you pick will be fine.

As for shows, still nothing booked. Not strictly a show, but I might go and visit the Tracy Emin retrospective at the National Gallery. Other than that nothing sorted [8D]

Cheers!

The Kitchin is excellent. Been there three times, always good, although the burger munchers amongst us may find it slightly on the poncy side. Tom Kitchin thought I was a food critic the first time I went in, and started inserting impromptu courses in between what I'd ordered. The Pan fried foie gras with haggis, neeps and tatties is a dish to behold, as is Pork & Langoustine starter.

A super sensible wine list too.

Only minor downside is that it's down in Leith.

Cheers, Howard

Hi Guys,

I've just made a reservation for us at the Balmoral for Sunday Lunch at 12:30pm.

Reservation is for 14 people as I assumed everyone would want to go, I can always modify the number down if needed.

Thanks,
Richard
