Upgrading to PE 1 way only

Hi,

I am flying to LAS 2nd Sept VS43 Econ (X). Flying back from LAX VS24 Econ (Q).

I called VA to see how much it would cost to upgrade to PE on the LGW-LAS leg. She told me as my ticket was the most restricted type I wouldn't be able to just upgrade 1 way I would have to upgrade both journeys and there are no PE seat left on the return flight.

Is this correct that I can only upgrade both ways not just 1?

Most restrictive conditions apply, however you can upgrade one way if required, you would need to move up to K,S or W. There will potentially be a change fee to move it up to a PE fare class.

X is not the most restrictive type, it is one of them but not the most!

So I would call back again, and explain that you woudl like to change your ticket so the poutbound sector is in K, S or W.

I called back and spoke to someone else and basically got the same reply. He said as X was the most restricted fare I would have to change both legs ( that was the most I could make out he wasn't very clear!)

I have 11000 miles and asked if using those would be a cheaper option. It worked out at an extra £167 to change the ticket to an upgradable econ ticket plus another £100 to make the change! I can't believe they can justify the £100! and of course I would have have to use my mile too.

Do you think this option would be worth it?

I'm a sure that you can have a sector combination of K/S/W and a Q. I'm assuming you are calling Flying Club Red??

To be fair, it probably would be cheaper for you to use your miles and pay the difference in fare. Yes the change fee is steep, but I would ask a supervisor to look at that for you as you are moving up a fare code and using miles. Alternative is to try your luck, and do an on the day, at the airport upgrade - I've not done this for a while, but has been around the £199 mark for a one way revenue upgrade.

Still confused on what the agent is expecting you to upgrade both sectors too, as you have already said that there is no PE on the return. Are they expecting you to shift it to an L or above (B, Y) on the return in conjunction with your K/S/W. I think it may be supervisor time.

Collaborated with another fare person, and the outbound sector is a mega fare, which has rules which state no changes. But upgrade ENTIRE JOURNEY for difference in fare. But also states may be used towards a higher Virgin Fare for the difference in fare PLUS £100. So you can get a K out and a Q back - just ask a supervisor to speak to fares if unsure.

I called Flying club red this time and had much more luck.

I have upgraded the outbound leg using miles plus £172.30 this is about £100 cheaper than previously quoted so i'm quite chuffed! and i'm sitting upstairs, bliss!!

I have a few more questions!

I have booked seats 74K & H. What do you think of my choice? also what are chances of me still getting these seats when I come to check-in? I've heard a few stories about seat selection being changed by Virgin but wondered how common that is?

Keep in mind that that 74H/K are in the last row in the rear of the upstairs cabin. They are also closest to the loo.

If you booked these seats I wouldn't worry too much about them being switched on you. This can happen, however, when aircraft types are changed for operational reasons, or when a seat that is more accessible to a handicapped person is needed.
