Looks like they have for a while now, see here:

http://www.mbna.com/europe/creditcards/mbna_amex.html

Looking at the cards there appears to be two flavours:

Non-Fee with 1 point per £1 spent
Fee (£95) with 1.5 point per £1 spent but lots of extras such as - travel insurance, Priority Pass and Concierge Service

If the VS card launches with similar benefits I don't suppose it will be too popular here as 1.5 miles would replace the current 2 and the benefits will be mostly redundant. Plus obviously the problem of acceptance. I would certainly be looking for a different card.

I am presuming that we can keep our current virgin mastercards... Just that any new customers will have to get the AMEX flavour.

Nice thought, but where do you walk to? [?][?]

This is REALLY disappointing. I still cannot see what benefit there is from moving from MC to Amex. I did a bit of a straw poll today and took note of all the shops I visited to see if they took Amex, not a very encouraging result with only 2 out of the 7 accepting it. The icing on the cake is that they didn't accept Amex for my Guns N Roses booking this evening.;)

I am hoping that they continue to honour the MC but if they cancel this I will also be off looking for something else.[:(!]

I would prefer to keep my FC mastercard as it's accepted in far more places ( especially on line ).

However the BA amex has a great companion ticket if you meet the spend criteria....I would love the VS card to offer this.

I suppose I could mop up any other spend with my Hilton mastercard ,that has only ever been used once ( to gain the introductory bonus points )

The VS MC also has a (pretty useless) companion ticket if you spend 15k in a year.

Is the BA one any more useful?

Yeah... I believe you can use the BA Amex companion ticket in conjunction with a mileage reward flight.[:0]

I have only once found a reason to use my VS companion voucher[n]

Yep, The BA AmEx Companion voucher is much better, you use it conjunction with a reward booking! Could you imagine that, so here is 100k VS miles, and my voucher - two free UC tickets to Tokyo.

Thanks,
Richard

Hmm... Could be all good and all bad in that rev management would be far more likely to screw down the reward seats if that happened on VS.

But, we can dream... [ii]

Visa and MC are being "persuaded" to lower the rates they charge merchants, so its likely that over the next few years the rewards on these cards are going to be reduced to nothing anyway, as the commissions to the card issuers is reduced as well.

Amex have always had a higher fee charged to merchants, and are not treated the same as Visa/MC, which will allow them to maintain the proportionally hugher merchant charges, which can then fund reward schemes better..

I hope everyone has e-mailed [email protected] to tell them what you think!!! I have advised them that they are going to lose many loyal customers if they change and that MBNA is the real problem with the card not the benefits!!!

I only know what has been posted in this thread.
I will wait and see exactly what the replacement package is, plus whether or not people who currently have a 2 points per £ Mastercard can keep it - and, if so, how long for... then I will decide. ;)

This is my sentiment exactly, although I am a bit peeved that if it wasn't for this site I wouldn't know this was an issue. But then, the AMEX gold was withdrawn with no publicity too.

Wonder how bothered they'd be at the prospect of losing loyalty in this way? I know, we don't know anything yet and all this is pure speculation.... was it the beginning of July an announcement is due?

In the USA Virgin Atlantic miles can already be eaned through Citibank (Diners Club Mastercard) and American Express (Membership Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest credit card). Why would you prefer a card which earns only VS miles rather than one which permits transfer to a range of carriers?

So what will happen for existing card holders?
