I have booked a holiday through virgin flying to orlando for 10 nights then on to Vegas for 4 nights. The internal flight is with Delta. There are 5 of us going so we will all have one case each, do you know what the luggage allowance is for an internal flight, obviously we will have quite a bit with us after staying in Orlando for 10 nights and then clothes for VEGAS. Please help.

Hi Gill - the Delta baggage allowances are here on the Delta Website - this should answer your questions.

BE WARNED. Your VS baggage allowance may be 32kg bags if in PE or Upper, but you are only allowed 22.5kg on internal flights without charge. 2 bags though, plus carry-on.

OMG, have to cut back on the shopping. I am flying uc, will I be allowed two backs at 32kg?

If you're in Upper Class, you can have 3 bags to the USA (and an additional one if you are Au)

We were caught out on our recent trip, should have mentioned it in my TR's! Our VS flights were UC both ways and we flew Delta 1st class internally between LAS & BOS. We each had one suitcase, medium sized Samsonited - nowhere near the 32kg limit, nearer 24kg (we weighed them at home before leaving).

At 1st class check in at LAS the agent said our checked baggage was "slightly" overweight and we would need to pay an excess weight charge of $25 each or "get" another case and pack the excess in a third case. She even said if our carry on bags were bigger we could stick the excess in those and take it as carry on. This was impossible - we prefer to travel light when it comes to carry on, ie. laptop case & small ruck sack.

We asked her how much overweight we were and if there was any flexibility, the problem was she kept quoting weight in pounds, not kg and we kept quoting kg! She said "we work in pounds here". Flexibility, other than get hold of more cases, was not an option [n]

Anyway we reluctantly paid her the $50 there & then (on VS AMEX!) & that was that.

The crazy thing is that - overall - we were well within DL's allowancehad we used more cases. We could have checked in bags totalling 90kg had we used 4 cases, and a staggering 36kg (plus 2 laptops!) as carry on had we taken advantage of DL's carry on allowance.

Just frustrates me that if we had used the maximum allowance it would be loads more hassle for DL, ie. more checked luggage for baggage handlers to deal with and more clobber in the aircraft cabin...couldn't believe the sheer amount of stuff people took on board on those DL flights!

Have to admit it though, as much as I disagree with the policy, at the end of day we were wrong - should have read the web site first!

Just a quick point here though - if you arrive on a transatlantic flight from the UK and then are transferring to an internal flight that day in the US then your baggage allowance for the transatlantic flight will be honoured by the internal airline - - this happened to us recently when we flew into MCO and then on to Key West using both Continental and Delta.

Mark, ONLY if it's a through ticket.

By the sound of Gill's OP, they're picking up the internal flight 10 days after they arrive in Orlando. Those rules you point to won't apply.

When I booked a package with VH last year, I did Las Vegas, Hawaii and San Fran. When I received my tickets and vouchers, it clearly stated the luggage allowance for the internal flights warning of the limits, even though we were flying UC on VA.

I would imagine it will be the same for Gill.

Thanks for all your feedback, I think I will take five suitcases (one for each of us) and make sure we all carry allowed sized carry on then we won't get caught.
